Still of the Night - Whitesnake | College Students' FIRST TIME REACTION! 

Whitesnake was David Coverdale's band after being the lead singer for Deep Purple (1973 - 1976). Though Still of The Night, Here I Go Again, and Is This Love were their biggest hits (radio-wise), you've got to listen to Slow an' Easy by Whitesnake. It's BY FAR their best, in my opinion. You guys are 100% on target with the Robert Plant comparisons. At the beginning of Slow an' Easy, you may even think it is Plant singing. Coverdale actually went on to create an album with Jimmy Page (Coverdale • Page) in 1993. A&A ROCKS! You guys have amazing insight into the music you react to, despite not growing up during the time it was released. BEST MUSIC REACTORS ON RU-vid!

A & A You guys did a reaction to Deep Purple “Burn” a couple of years ago. This is David Coverdale the same lead singer only a decade later. He was 22 with DP and a complete professional when this came out.

John Sykes is a beast. His playing and tone on this whole album is just tasty.

For a Gen Xer, this is 80s Nostalgia Level = MAXIMUM God I love this great big ball of cheese. So. Much. Fun.

You MUST do “Crying in the rain” from their 1987 album. Absolutely nasty guitar riffs and one of the most incredible guitar solos IMO. John Sykes is completely underrated.

Crying in the Rain has one of the most insane guitar solos. John Sykes shreds his ass off in a prime example of 80s overindulgence.

The guitarist on the recording is John Sykes. He was also on their Slide It In album, and he was briefly in Thin Lizzy at the end of their run (on the "Thunder and Lightning" album). As a fan of this channel for a while, I think you guys are more likely to enjoy "Slide It In", "Love Ain't No Stranger", or "Slow and Easy" off if the Slide It In album than you are "Here I Go Again". Other good tunes off the '87 release are "Bad Boys" and "Give Me All Your Love". Here I Go Again occupies the middle ground between power ballad and banging rocker.

"Is This Love?" is the absolute best use of Davis Coverdale's voice.

Was never a huge Whitesnake fan, but I'll admit this song blew me away when it came out. One of the few tunes from them I never get sick of. Not sure what it is about the fade out, but it still gives me goosebumps for some reason. Sykes guitar just shines on this. Sorry Andy, gonna have to strongly disagree with you on this one bro. lol

"Slow an' Easy" has a great Costco Robert Plant feel with simple, cool slide guitar & a catchy chorus. It's a great 80's guilty pleasure of a song for me. Andy - You're gonna feel uncomfortable singing this one with your bros, too. LOL!

I’m curious if you’ve reacted to Queensryche? Eyes Of A Stranger? Spreading The Disease? Anything from their Operation Mindcrime album? It came out about the same time as Whitsnake.

1987 is one of the greatest rock/metal albums of all time, without a shadow of doubt. Simply epic start with this track, and listen to how brilliantly "Children of the Night" concludes it. Incredible.

The cassette deck in my car wore out this album when it was released and I was in high school. This song has such a great drop coming out of the bridge into the solo. That part alone puts Still of the Night into the upper category of my favorite 80s fare. Yes, they are a very Zeppelin style band, but a lot of bands were like that back then and weren't anywhere near as good.

One other comment: I can’t believe that you haven’t hit REO Speedwagon yet. Don’t do them at the height of their popularity when they leaned a little too top 40, but instead at their peak rock/blues in the 70s. Gary Richrath was a smoking guitarist. I recommend starting with something off their live album, You Get What You Play For (they also have some of the best album titles). My favorite song off that album is probably 157 Riverside Avenue or Golden Country, or you could go with the iconic Riding the Storm Out. But be sure to do them from this live album.

This was my 171-upvoted pick that lost to Dio a few months back for 80s metal banger....Lead singer is David Coverdale from Deep Purple- two other bandmates are from Ozzy Osbourne's band....hence the kick ass- non-hair metal sound....the cheesy video with the "sex police" coming after Coverdale and his girlfriend would have given some era-context

I agree with you Andy when a song looses your groove it becomes a B+. "Here I Go Again" was overplayed but I wouldn't mind hearing your opinion on it. It's still a fun song.

Andy - Indeed, you don't have to defend yourself; keep giving your honest impressions. By the way, I can give you the name of a good dozen songs 7 to 10 minutes in length that are worth the listen; they do indeed have a reason for such a length.

If you want the full Whitesnake/Zeppelin experience you need to do "Slow an' Easy". David Coverdale at his Costco Robert Plant peak.

I’m surprised with Andy’s B+ since he’s always been the one leaning towards guitar heavy riffs. If you love heavy guitars you have to love this. Some of the best guitarist have played in White Snake. BTW, David Coverdale and Jimmy Page released an album together in the early 90’s. It is quite good.

Example: link Quiet Riot to Jane's Addiction. 1 Rudy Sarzo played in Quiet Riot before Whitesnake. 2 Steve Vai was also in Whitesnake 3 Steve Vai played with David Lee Roth 4 David Lee Roth played with Van Halen 5 Sammy Hagar was in Van Halen and later Chickefoot 6 Chad Smith was in Chickenfoot and is in the Red Hot Chili Peppers 7 Dave Navaro was a member of The Red Hot Chili Peppers and was in Jane's Addiction. Took me 1 more than the Kevin Bacon thing but I'd still. Kiss Gets convoluted. Mark St. John was on the Kiss album Anamalize. Prior to that he was in a band White Lion with David Donato. David also had a short tenure in Black Sabbbath. Here we could go the easy route back through Ozzy but we won't. Dio was Ozzy's successor. Dio was in a band with Ritchie Blackmore called Rainbow. Ritchie Blackmore was also in Deep Purple who's 3rd singer was David Coverdale. As we previously established David Coverdale was a founder of Whitesnake... This was a fun reaction! Another song from the same year you might enjoy is “Rock Me” by Great White. Alex, you mentioned the similarity to Led Zeppelin. It was no secret even back then that they were full-on channeling Zeppelin in this song, which was a huge hit. I remember reading that Jimmy Page said he wished he had written it. Page, of course, later went on to collaborate with David Coverdale. There are other great Whitesnake songs for you to check out. But even more, I’d love for you to react to songs from Robert Plant’s incredible ‘80s solo catalog: “Burning Down One Side,” “Far Post,” “Other Arms,” “Big Log,” “In the Mood,” “Little by Little.”

"Here I Go Again" is an absolute anthem. Short but sweet guitar solo by Adrian Vandenberg. More commercial, without a doubt, but a must listen, nonetheless. Listen to the version from the 1987 self-titled album (sometimes referred to as "Here I Go Again, 1987), not the one from the 1982 album Saints and Sinners.

My favorite Whitesnake song, though "Here i Go Again" was my class song. I love songs with tempo changes. And I love the section of playing the guitar with a violin bow. And David Coverdale in his prime was absolutely one of the great rock singers and front men.

There’s no way you HAVEN’T heard “Here I Go Again” in a bar or a movie - it’s one of the most popular songs from the 80s! If you decide to hit it, do the “radio” version that starts with just keyboards. I remember the album version being different and not as good.

There are definitely some gems in this genre of over-produced, 80’s, shimmery “heavy metal”, but as someone who grew up in the 80’s and was obsessed with these bands, I don’t feel that this music has stood the test of time all that well. I like it more for nostalgia than I do for its actual importance in the history of rock. Like modern hip hop, this was more about the image and the vibe than it was for the ingenuity of the music, imo.

For a great progressive rock song with a similar title, try "In the Dead of Night" by UK, featuring the great virtuoso guitarist Allan Holdsworth and an all around all-star band. Not having heard Holdsworth is a big gap in your musical journey. He is the favorite guitarist of many great guitarists.

I was surprised to see this song pop up. I didn't know it was on A&A's radar. I'm glad they did a reaction. Always loved it just for being a kickass banger. Ah, Whitesnake brings back memories... My band played "Love 'Ain't No Stranger". But my favourite song of theirs was, and still is: "Guilty of Love" from the same album (Slide It In). Great straight ahead rock and roll in the style of Thin Lizzy. Its a bop, banger, all of the above.

I always greatly preferred the late ‘70’s- early ‘80’s Whitesnake with Jon Lord on keyboards, Ian Paice on drums, Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody on guitars and a highly underrated Neil Murray on bass. Great live album with that lineup “Live in the Heart of the City”. Later albums everyone but Coverdale was gone and they fell into that cheesy mid-late 80’s sound

What a lot of people fail to realize is that the guitars on this entire album was done by the legendary John Sykes, who left abruptly before the records release. In the video, I believe that was Adrian Vandenburg and Vivian Campbell, who'd later go on to join Def Leppard. To understand the virtuous nature of John Sykes, you must review his trio band Blue Murder. That self titled debut album was amazing. Showcasing his underrated vocals and axe prowess.

Gen-X here.... One of Whitesnake's master creations. Long Duration Song: Yes. Realize the times were different back then. Instant gratification wasn't the "thing" and we actually immersed ourselves into the songs. We took the time to feel the message, not just listen. The way Whitesnake builds the energy up and doesn't leave the listener hanging is true talent. It's definitely missing from today's trash .

Ah, Whitesnake. This was a huge hit. And respresentative of what helped usher in grunge. Glam rock, cock rock, whatever you want to call it, my generation was tired of the shallow songs about nothing but sex, et all. Nirvana blew it all up & changed everything. With that said, still patiently waiting for an Alice in Chains reaction. You won't be disappointed!

Right there again with the big hair…what great times to be a teen! The fun of the 80s!!!! Still great. What a great voice. When you watch the video, moving through the different sounds in this song make sense. It is operatic and thoughtful/ reflective at times, and the jarring changes make sense. He is telling a story. Dramatic story telling of the era. Naughty at times. It was pushing limits, rebellious and a bit tongue in cheek. It was a different vibe than today. Andy, the heavy sexual overtures were the style and there was a lot more going on than just holding your girlfriend. Lol These bands were great wingmen, they helped get everyone in the mood. Dare I say foreplay? The guys/ boyfriends had NO objections!😉😁

Whitesnake was an 80s corporate product -- Led Zeppelin homogenized, pasteurized, and produced for mass consumption on MTV. No one can say this is a Great Work of Art, but as disposable radio pop fun, it works.

Ironic in a way, since Coverdale would go on to play with Jimmy Paige... those were pretty great underrated concerts. He wore his Robert Plant, and Zeppelin, love right on his sleeve his whole career.
