Still The BEST TOILET For Vanlife??? (updated) 

We use a bucket and line it with about 10 to twenty bags, one inside another. Do your business, tie off the first inner bag and push it down (if it’s just wee, add gel powder or kitty litter) and do your next business on top, tie off inner bag number two, push down and repeat until your bucket is fairly full. The tie it all off with the last bag and either bury out bush or put in a rubbish bin/dumpster. It’s basically a homemade, cheaper and more environmentally friendly dry flush

I have replaced the regular black tank toilet in our 5th wheel with a separet tiny and it was the best upgrade ever.. the whole family actually loves this toilet better than the toilets at home, as you see nothing, smell nothing.. well except the person having to empty the bag 🤣 but if done right with keeping the lid on until you're actually at the bin to throw the bag, it's pretty straightforward and painless.

Apparently, horse pellets are great for the solids container. They smell a little like fragrant wood and absorb any water (which would be the smell issue). The drier = no smell at all (which is why the separate works in the first place).

I heard pine pellets are the way to go for the #2 side on the separator. You get them at the tractor supply store, and it's way cheaper than kitty litter.

You can bodge together your mystery toilet with a bucket, bucket compatible urine diverter and nappy disposal cartridges. Only difference is instead of pushing a button for the poop to be whisked away you'd need to spin the handle

The Cinderella is also available in a version that uses gas. No need for a huge battery bank for that one.

I've used dry flush for years. Before Use: Add a speck of kitty litter, paper towel, flush once & another speck of kitty litter. Now it's primed. Kitty litter for urine is a must. Urinate multiple times. Just before flushing add more kitty litter and a couple of paper towels. Don't flush unless you do #2. If time has lapsed between use, add a little more kitty litter and about 3/4 cup fresh water. In this case, the Laveo Dry Flush has been used for medical use, on the road, in a Yukon, in a Highlander and in a Class B RV. We are considering adding it to a forest Man Cave with 6 beds. It's a life changing product for our family. I wish there was a better score than A+ because this toilet deserves it.

great video! NOTE ABOUT THE AMAZON ITEM, if you read the description of the toilet on that listing it was being sold with the flap not working. It was a faulty batch. Hence why everyone had issues with it.

For the dry flush toilet have you tried those gel powder they use like in diapers for #1 and wait a couple of minutes for the gel to form before flushing it to avoid splashing or spilling. There are scented ones like the Lionalp brand w/c is eco friendly too.

I've lived in a tiny home on wheels for 30 months and love it. When planning for a new parking location, I bought a Separett Tiny with urine diverter hose and felt like a made a great choice after much research. However, that parking spot didn't work out and didn't need the toilet after all. I never even took the Tiny out of the box! If anyone is planning to purchase the Separett Tiny, I paid $1k for it and would be glad to recoup some money and sell it to someone who can use it for a great deal. I'm currently in New England, USA and glad to entertain a reasonable offer. Regardless of selling the unused Tiny toilet, I send good wishes to all my fellow tiny lifers out there. Cheers!!

Have had a Tiny installed for 6 months and have had similar positive experience, although I can smell it on side of van sometimes. I bought the version with external urine drain and send it into to my grey water tank, which also has my shower output.

Good one - thank you for this vid! We use dry flush and agree with everything you said except perhaps to emphasize that it's an ongoing expense due the cartridge's. We do use cat-litter for the liquid. With our 6" vent fan open (but not running) in our small shower alcove the cat-litter/liquid can sit for multiple uses (all day) and does not smell in the 7 x 14 trailer space. Like a cat box. 2 of us use a cartridge every 3 days. But other than the squishy feel, there's no smell disposing of the bundle - and it's just a smaller black plastic bag so it's not obvious what you're throwing away :)

It is the installation and the alignment of the containers which inhibits the flaps from not functioning well. Get those right and the flaps are great:) (from experience)

I really love the idea of the Levao and that drive flush toilet system. I do not mind peeing in a bottle but I have never been camping or backpacking with a woman who has in any sense of the word enjoyed it. Also, the idea of spending five dollars every time that I have to use it to go number two, drives me absolutely insane to think about. I cannot wait until there is a generic version of the S bagging system released. Actually, I Could not wait, so I got the urine diverting system and I’m very happy with it so far…

Please don't forget one if the biggest down side of the dry flush toilet is the COST of the cartridges. Yike! Cost per flush is hight.

This is one of the better comparison videos I've seen on this subject. Maybe the hybrid between your favorite and the fact that when you put compost in with your solid waste, it definitely mitigates the smell because it absorbs the moisture which is a big part of what's causing the smell. When you use the kitty litter you're just substituting the smell of kitty litter eew and combining it with a small amount of the smell of the waste. So adding hamster shavings, sawdust or the very popular coconut coir absorbs the moisture which is the prime smell causing issue. So use the bag had some absorbing matter that does not smell itself and you avoid dumping the stinky bag and leaving it in a place where other people are exposed to it. Give it a shot I'm pretty sure you'll continue using it. It's worked for me, and I'm a full timer.

Try pelletized horse bedding cheap, lighter & really helps with the smell. I’ve used it for kitty litter & it works great!

Thanks for the update video! I currently have a Thetford 565e porta-potti in my van and have rented several RVs in Europe with cassettes. I don't agree with your rating of cassette toilets so far above porta-potties. The latter function exactly like cassettes, except their holding tanks aren't removed outside the van/RV. But that's really not an issue in a small van as long as you are careful. Smell, dumping, etc, is no different. That said, the Separett Tiny would be my choice if I ever switch. Disposal would be even easier.

Hi Seven. Good videos. We bought and love the WRAPPON GREEN TOILET. Beautifully bags and heat seals your waste. Requires a packet of coagulant for optimum use. Disposal is super easy and super clean. Bag drops out the bottom, just throw it in the trash. Cheers

I have a van with a Macerator that makes the black tank discharge experience so different. This would suggest if this was included it would make your top tier rank. Way more convienent than a traditional dump. You can pump out the black water with less oudor and no chunks!

We love our dry flush, we use the pee powder and haven’t had an issue with urine waste plus the no smell is a game changer for us.

First couple of times using the Tiny, messing around with it while installing and such, I did manage to get the opening mechanism kinda stuck, but once you've effed with it a few times you get the hang of it. No smells. I found I'm emptying the #2 section more often than expected, but maybe I just... poop a lot. It's a bit gross, but surprisingly unstinky, and if you've made an effort to place the bag properly, handles not all scrunched up etc, then tying the thing up, lifting it up and carrying it out is no big deal at all.

From your first video on the Seperate, it looked like a good solution for our ambulance conversion. Easy install. Actually it is not too disgusting to empty. We just use the solid waste lid. Remove the whole container to garbage before 9:33 removing the bag. By the way, wherever you can dispose of diapers, you can legally dispose of this waste. Just have the courtesy to tie the bag. My wife is not heavy enough to open the flaps, so we removed them and it turns out still no smell issues our any problems. As with many of the products or systems in our built, You Tube channels have been great in comparing and finally deciding on the best purchases for us. Thanks!

Great overview! I still love our Natures Head and would go with a composting toilet hands down because as he said, the compost medium such as coco coir is super effective at reducing the smell in the dry box to almost zero. Since both toilets vent to the outside of the van, I know which one I want to sleep near with the windows open. If your van doesn’t have operable windows, maybe not such an issue.

I hope there is something like Litter Genie for #2 that use cheaper trash bags and seal instead of dry flush.

There are a bunch of "urine diversion systems" if you google it specially designed for the laveo dry-flush but I haven't tried any, would love to see you do a review, most seem to just attach to the front... Personally, for my own suggestion, I really wish the laveo dry-flush company would make two types of refill packages, the mylar ones right now (1.50$ per flush) and a 2mm/3mm "heavy-duty/construction" garbage bag re-fill version. It'd be 20x (or more) cheaper, putting people at a more reasonable 7c or less per flush. I know all plastic garbage bags leak some odor compared to mylar, and that plastic bags are easier to puncture, but, for the $$$ savings it would be a very popular option I think, and the waste is technically wrapped by two garbage bags anyway, so, likelihood of leaks are low. Lastly, onto my second suggestion, the toilet costs 1000$, they should make it so the waste section is air tight, and that the lids close with a much better air tight seal by default. This would further support a cheaper "plastic instead of mylar" refill container, and, also help a bit for some situations even with mylar bags :). > Ideally/hopefully, down the road a company will make a good dry-flush toilet using standard garbage bags, or standard vacuum-seal plastic rolls (for food) as the re-fills, which would be my ideal case, just so I can pick up the re-fills at walmart/etc (and naturally would mean cents per flush, instead of 1.50$) :)

Had the same idea for the dry toilet

Congrats for having the sh!t on all this man. Im an engineer with a 37ft boat, it has a holding tank toilet with the advantage that all marina facilities have pump out facilities, they work well until you have to fix them. I think the 2 part diverting toilet is best for vans and I like the dry flush idea but it isnt feasible as a product, and can be improved on. So my own thoughts go to the use of garbage bags which are now an international commodity; cheap and accessible, and some can be very thick. So now youve got the Separate type separation and lid, with pump out fans, and a boost for while the trap is open. So the problem is this is a bag of poop and emptying that just sucks. If this was a food product, they would create a heat sealed vacuum enclosure of the garbage bag, but they do so with special bagging and unlimited space and electrical requirements. All I have to offer is a cable or chain outside throttles the bag closed at the neck. So at the neck the bag is choked, from there the options are a cable tie, or ribbon tie, adhesive tape, or a bag heat sealer seals the bag closed. I tend to think a cable tie or adhesive would work best. You do that one time when the bag is going to be disposed of. If you can make an effective seal, and mechanise that you have it made It still presents questions like, whats that like for the environment?, and where do you dump it anyway. I guess I wouldnt have any problem with putting this into a trash bin or compactor, but not everyone feels that way. I am definately open to hearing about these impacts.

For my wife and I, the Laveo Dry Flush is the only option. It's $2 a flush, but totally worth it. She adds a small scoop of kitty litter on top of her business (1 & 2), and I flush after I dump on top of what's in the bowl. We average 1.5 flushes per day unless we hit the wrong Taco Bell, and $3 to $4 per day to never have to deal with sewage is a bargin in my book.

For the dry flush toilet, you use Pee Powder. Put a teaspoon of it in the bowl and It deodorizes the pee and turns it into a gel. You can pee 3 or 4 times between "flushes" so it extends the use of each cartridge. I use it on a boat with a family. We generally "flush" only 1 or 2 times a day. Of course, the kids go number one when swimming. Always stay upstream from them.

I've got the portable toilet from dometic in my van. Zero smell! I've got poops in there from a few months ago and can't smell a thing as long as you have the blue diodegradable solution in there😉

I think your idea is perfect! I really hope the company make that, because when I saw that, all I think about is that urine smells. I also have an idea for the twisting cassette, I think if you put solidfy stuff on it when your done your business, I think it will help. I don't know what do you guys think? But this also kind of costly.

Pros: looks & urine diverter option - uses grey tank. Cons: Flap closes when you lean forward to wipe your butt (even with V2 springs) and want to put tissue in the loo - solution: put tissue in dog/ nappy bag then put in loo afterwards.

Whew! Cause I bought mine after the last video.😅 I still like mine, but haven't used it much since I'm still mid build.

We've used an "Incinolet" brand incinerating toilet in our fishing shack for the past four years, about 15 weeks per year. It's worked well for us BUT it uses an average of 3,500 watt hours of electricity per "flush." This is more economical than a septic system in our situation however we get electricity from a utility company. The Incinolet produces approximately a tea cup full of ash per week for the two of us and is relatively easy to clean and maintain. I was actually looking at the Separett and other options to use as the toilet at a canvas wall tent we are planning to set up on a parcel that doesn't have electricity.

There really needs to be a dry flush and diverting toilet hybrid

Personally, i think the self-made hybrids are the best and most economic ones. The example of where your poop gets' vacuumed sealed' and you can reuse that bag to have a bunch in it works great imho. there are some great alternatives DIY. Some decomposable recently sized bags you can buy for big dog poopie bags, and put them in a 'opening', that is slightly hanging, is a great option. the best thing to do is to buy coffee powder and put 1/2 a cup or 1/4 a cup in it, then do your dump, then throw another 1/4 cup on it, simply because 'nr2' isn't (always) completely dry. and then seal it like you do with classic bread bags for example, like that red 'knot' around it, cut it off / out and drop it into the 'toilet 'trashcan' ' - with a in-toilet ventilation that sucks the air out. toilet cover with a rubber seal against smells etc. a separation for the urine, that simply goes like into a small 'black water tank' where you put in a pool chlorine tablet to neutralize as much the smells etc and make it as 'sterile' as possible - and for example use exhaust heat to 'vaporize' it out through a pressure breather. and simply have alcohol spray and like throwaway papers ( like the wet budd wipes ) to clean the toilet after each use, wash your hands and let the hand washing waste water go through the toiler 'urine' section to flush it down a bit extra. now another option, as for the incinerator thing, is an alternative, very simple option : a literal air fryer. get yourself a small airfryer preferably in like a 'cassette' function where heat does not come from top down but from the side / behind etc, and that you can 'drop' your dumpies in there perhaps drop some toilet paper in there to absorb as much liquids, add a bit of coffee powder, or coffee beans, and let it run for 30 minutes at like 180 C or 200 C so that it completely dries out and turns into charcoal. I am not sure, but perhaps - as distasteful it may sound, perhaps, it can even be used into a stove burner. the only true importance remains a 'vacuum ventilator' to get all the smellies out.

Use a laundry cleaner with 32% sodium percarbonate, helps the break down the effluent to a runny mix, and few to no smells- in a thetford type toilet. Horse bedding might work well in a composting type toilet. I use it in a cat litter tray on my van, doesnt smell, but of course remove the cat #2s.

Don’t use the kitty litter. Tried it and paper animal bedding or pine bedding is better and more convenient then kitty litter. I currently use Kaytee Clean & Cozy Small Animal Bedding in my bag toilet. I also heard horse bedding pine pellets were good but haven’t tried them yet. ✌️ 💩

I appreciate your videos. The ideal toilet would be a diesel incinerator toilet. You would think they would be popular for marine use and diesel vans. As you point out electric is problematic. I am going to look at a propane incinerator

We have an Incinolet. Like the Cinderella but only $2,400 for the toilet. Yes, it is a power hog but we have 1,120 amp hours of Lifepo4 that we built ourselves for only $2,800. We love it but only use it at night or when nature or a bathroom is not available.

I think you should have the propane incinerator toilet listed above the electric version. What you save on power system you can add a bidet seat. This is the ultimate. It would be the only propane appliance for me.

2 questions. can you shower in the same room as the separrett tiny toilet? If so, does shower water enter into the toilet at the back of the lid? Cleaning the toilet after each use?

You can create a digester , with an evaporator, also provides methane or hydrogen if you turn into a fuel cell.
