I have a lot of Mediums. And Jo Sonja were generous to give me even more to try. By why so many? Don’t they all do the same thing? Well hold on there, there’s actually quite a bit of difference between all the Mediums in many subtle ways. Purpose, Viscosity, Finish…this video will give a quick rundown of what medium to use for what, and when.
If you want to check out the paints a mediums I tend to use, you can find them at: www.josonja.com

The advice to use a retarding medium to keep points on brushes is unbelievably effective. Even my old brushes used for mixing paint are holding a decent point again. Incredible!

I'm glad you brought this up again, I've been forgetting to di it recently, but really should be doing it way more between sessions myself so this was a good reminder!

Great video! very informative. If I mix matte medium with water, do I basically have a thinner that won't mess with the properties of my paint too much?

Having that Matte Medium in there will certainly make it act nicer. Depending on the viscosity of the paint though, if it's just a fluid acrylic and you only need a tiny bit of water to get it to the right consistency, that wont mess with it too much. But for something like a heavy body or if the purpose is to make the paint matte, I'd use the medium first to get it thin then add small bits of water to get it to the consistency that you want, the matte medium should do most of the thinning, so it's only a bit of water to get it really loose. That's why I'm always using the sides of my wet pallet to wet my brush actually, just a little bit of water in the brush to thin further if the medium isn't thin enough. If you mean for airbrush, then it wont matter too much as the airbrush already messes with how paint layers on the model so a mix of the two is just fine. Though don't make it too thin or spidering gets harder to control I find.

It comes from my days working in a news room. We were always trying to fit puns and wordplay into everything we could 😅

I am using Acrylic paints which typically have a Matte finish. I am engaged on a special project to paint a plastic item that requires a High Gloss "showroom" finish. Is it better to add Gloss Medium to the paint? or is better to use a Gloss Varnish after painting? (or both....) And second question, based on the above, which products may you recommend for this project? (The item is made polystyrene plastic).mThank you in advance for your time and consideration.

I think your best bet is to paint with the Matte paints since those will have better surface adhesion to the Poly plastic, then varnish with your high gloss after. If you mix in the gloss or paint with gloss, there's a chance it could just peel off the surface of the plastic like it would a plastic pallet. An ultra mate primer would also give a nice surface to paint on in which case adding the gloss to the paint would also work.

I'm a big Liquitex and Golden fan for mediums. I often find that the specific hobby paints are way too expensive for similar to equal quality. What's your thoughts on JoSanja? I have never heard of them. Do you feel they were in the same realm of the others and just need some practice to grasp or was it immediate familiarity? Cost?

I do have a video on when I first tired Jo Sonja paints: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YKAdka85Row.html The consensus is they're everything I love about Liquitex Heavy bodies. Pigment dense, Single pigments, good tubes, large volume. But Matte and with a little bit better flow. At the time the price was really good too cause they were on sale, I don't know if that's still going on but for the Level 1 pigments it was about $5.50 US for 2.5Oz/75ml. In the video I point out they have a nice smaller mixing set too that has smaller tubes and a cheap cost of entry which would be perfect as a Starter Kit for minis. I got some of their brushes too to try out, and while the Natural Hair ones are alright, the synthetic are actually some of the best synthetic ones I've tried so far. At least the ones with black bristles. They have a lot of variety of brushes. >_>

JoSonja is nearly impossible to get in Germany. Maybe Mr Sonja can look out for a eu retailer

Ya it's very much a US based company seeing as how they're really just a small business Art Studio. I would say though that you're very close to Scale 75 in Spain who also have some really nice paints and mediums, though not as many single pigments, but I do use their Scale Artist line, Airbrush Thinner, Inks and Metallics as staples in my hobby too. They just recently did a kickstarter to add even more colours to their Scale Artist line too.

I was especially looking for a eu alternative fir the josonja magic mix. I feel like that's the one product that isn't covert by scale/ak/greenstuff world/vallejo

Ah, that's a good point. Technically it's just a mix of an extender, glaze medium and matting agent which would be possible to mix up something like that yourself. Magic Mix is a pretty solid formulation though. I think if I were to try and make it myself I'd probably use a Liquitex Matte Medium for the thickness, then either glycerin or Scale 75 drying inhibitor, and Maxx Matte from GSW to make sure it dries matte. [assuming I couldn't use any of the Jo Sonja stuff]
