It's actually quite easy to make a home made or pallet wash for miniatures painting as it only needs three key components: Something to get the right Viscosity, Something to give it the right finish, and the pigments. Using different paints inks and mediums we can really customise the final output of the wash as well, so that they can be customised for application or style.

This is the approach I used for my regular saurians. I tested until I got the color right and then make a small container worth to do my whole army. Great stuff as usual! I'm loving the ceramite armor look.

Thank you for sharing. Any thoughts on a black wash formula to go over White Primed models where primary purpose is recess shading with little to no flat surface staining? I was thinking of black ink heavily diluted with FlowAid over a glossed surface? After the BlackWash is dry, apply a Matt Varnish and continue with Acrylic Painting. Your insight is welcomed.

I think you've hit all the notes with that formula you gave, you definitely want the wash very thin without using water, the surface to be hydrophobic a bit so it doesn't pool on flat surfaces so good idea to use the gloss first. Just make sure you're using small amounts and not flooding, just let it seep into those gaps itself and if it's pooling too much have a clean brush on standby to wick some away. While black on white I think is always going to have an issue with particulates and some staining those should at least mitigate it some, after the matt varnish it should at least be easy enough to layer over some white so they're not seen in the end product.

Hey there, really enjoying your videos and am about to get into mini painting with Jo Sonjas paints. I have heard you need to mix them with a medium so that they do not peel off when a "wash" or "contrast" is used over the top of them? Have you noticed this or have any tips when using these paints? Thanks alot! 👍

I have never heard this and indeed matte paint like jo Sonja should be harder to get off any surface once dry simply because there's not as much of the acrylic binder to give it that plastic like finish, just make sure it's fully dry before using the medium or contrast. That said I tend to use medium for thinning it anyway so It's still worthwhile to have medium for that purpose if you want to play it safe.

The bottle you called matte medium says it is matte varnish. So is that functionally the same thing as matte medium except it also is harder when dry? Seems like it could be a little bit different than just medium... Oh and great vid.

It says it's a varnish, but I really don't think it has the same kind of seal as a polyurethane varnish. It even says on the bottle that it works mixed with paint so I feel like it's a varnish in the sense that it is used to give a model the finish you want it to have but not a sealer. Though it does leave a pretty distinctive layer with enough on. That said so far its the only matte 'varnish' that I've never failed to get testers dullcote levels of matte with. Even thinned with water I still get a perfect matte. And it's thin enough that it doesn't need thinned for airbrush use. Many other matte varnishes can be dependent on how much they're shaken, what they're covering, if you try and thin them etc. Maxx Matt just seems to work regardless of how I use it.

Not always. In this case it does say on the bottle it can be used as a varnish or medium, but a proper polyurethane matte varnish would not be able to be used the same way.

Many sauces do! We've been getting meal kits and lots of them have dressings with mayo and Dijon as a base. That said, I used to put mustard on my eggs like some people do ketchup so maybe I am just weird.

@@jeronimo486 Honey mustard sauce is Mustard + Mayo + Honey. Proportion as desired. Chick-fil-A sauce is honey mustard + bbq sauce. Something similar to the kraft type specifically. Honestly bud, start reading the ingredient labels on sauces. Most the information you could want is literally right there. You might be surprised at just how many of them have mayo in there.

It may look like mustard, but don't be one of the gross mini painters who sucks on their brushes. Just because it's nontoxic doesn't mean it's edible.
