ABOUT ME:
Thanks for visiting my channel, I hope you enjoyed the video! I founded Caterpillar Cross Stitch in 2015 when I tried desperately for months to find a modern baby sampler my mum could stitch for new baby Felicity that would fit in with her simple, contemporary nursery. I love cross stitch, running, baking fruit cakes, drinking gin, eating salted caramel ice cream and most crafts!
See you soon and happy stitching! Sally x

I only stitch in hand .. the opposite direction that you stitch is comfortable for me. Sometimes I stitch half stitched up and down in an opposite direction. Just depends on the pattern. Enjoyed the demo!

I’m right handed but when I was learning I learned to lay my stitches the left handed way. I’m all sorts of backwards 😂 thank you for this tutorial! I’ve started stitching in hand and needed a little more assurance that I was doing ok. Thanks again ❤

🙂I am actually left handed and this is exactly how I stitch when in hand. Meant to add that my stitches always lay as you've laid yours. My stitches go first \\\then /// and I start at the bottom. On the left if possible. That way I'm coming up in clean hole and going down in dirt hole. (Threads)

Thank you so much for your comment Betty - I'm so glad I worked it out correctly for left handed stitching. As a right handed person, I take tutorials that are made for right-handed people for granted, I'm so glad I could create something that works for left handed stitchers as well!

Thank you for saying this. I've seen comments that lefties should start top right and I think what you said is best. All about the "dirty" and "clean" holes when you are stitching rows on top of rows.

Thanks so much for watching Nicole 😊 There is actually no official left and right way of stitching, I used it just as a way of explaining the difference. Ultimately the most important thing is to find the way that is most comfortable to you without needing to adhere to any 'correct' way of stitching - and as you say, the direction of stitching (left-right/bottom-top) is the most important thing when laying x's rather than which stitching hand we're using 😊

I so appreciate you showing for left handed stitching! Not many tutorials do that. I am a leftie and do stitch in hand but I don’t change the orientation of the //‘s from how right handed people stitch. The only thing I do differently is stitch from the top down where possible rather than from the bottom up. And I do turn my work 180 degrees fairly regularly depending on the pattern.

I learned to stitch with a hoop when dinosaurs roamed. But I have not tried this wonderful way of stitching and it looks much quicker too. I am right-handed but I stitch left to right going from top left to bottom right then back. I stitch in blocks of 20 stitches so I don't have to count back away from the first block of stitches. In other words I stitch all rows left to right. Thank you soooooo much Cheers Marilynne

Very interesting. I have noticed that your stitching technique goes generally from right to left and upper right to lower left each block. Does it make a difference if we do it in the opposite manner. In other words, I have always gone from left to right and in each block from lower left to upper right to start. Your comment about the hand positioning makes sense. I am going to have to try the way you do it and see if it makes it quicker or easier in terms of hand positioning.
@StitchesAndDiamonds
@StitchesAndDiamonds Год назад
Thanks so much for watching Susan! 😊 There is no 'right' way of stitching (or at least I strongly believe there isn't one!) - the most important thing is to find what suits your hand best and what makes for the most comfortable stitching. There is an ever so slight difference in the way the stitches lie if you stitch them right-to-left/top-to-bottom and left-to-right/bottom-to-top when they're right next to each other however I believe they're practically impossible to spot once the project has been washed and ironed. I frequently combine both left to right and right to left stitches (of course while keeping the same top stitch direction) in one project depending on where I need to travel with my needle but I always try to make the left-to-right/bottom-to-top direction to be the majority of my project because that suits my stitching hand the best 😊 I hope this helped - please let me know if you have any further questions 😊 Happy stitching 🌸 Marie

I just completed a project using the Victorian method and sometimes the Danish method. I also used the sewing method. Unfortunately, when I switched techniques, the tension changed, and this is very visible in my finished piece. :( Any suggestions for how to keep the tension consistent when using the sewing method? Thanks for any suggestions!

Thank you so much ! This was super informational! I’ve been wanting to try and do the sewing method because I hear it’s quicker than the stab method … what are your opinions on that ?
@CaterpillarCrossStitch
@CaterpillarCrossStitch Год назад
Thank you so much for watching! 😊 Definitely, the sewing method is almost twice faster than traditional one handed stab method. We have released a video in June 2022 called How to Stitch In Hand and Double Your Speed where I actually tested this - it's full of tips and includes a details tutorial on the types of stitches used in sewing method, perhaps you'd find it useful too! Happy stitching 🌸 Marie

I really, really want to do this! I put off cross stitching due to having to move my frame or hoop. I’m just worried that if I switch to this method from my hoop, that my current project will suddenly have sections that look different.

Hi, how fast do you cross stitch ? I am feeling slow and I don't know if it's normal or not. For example, for stitching a square 5cm in 2 colours, it takes me several hours. Am I slow ?
@CaterpillarCrossStitch
@CaterpillarCrossStitch Месяц назад
As long as you are enjoying the process, speed doesn't matter. It also depends on how long you have been stitching. For myself personally, the more I stitched, the quicker I became

@@CaterpillarCrossStitch I am not a stitcher regular daily. Stitching needs a lot of time and we don't have much time enough in a day. I wonder how do stitchers to make several designs... The big problem for me to stitching is that hurts my eyes, my neck,... But stitching designs are so beautiful that we can forget all evils😄
