Stitching in Hand and Sewing Method Cross Stitch Tutorial with Priscilla and Chelsea, and Kimberly! 

Hi girls, I’m new to cross stitch so I don’t have much experience yet but I think I would like to learn the sewing method. I think the way Chelsea do may be easier to me but I couldn’t see clearly how she was doing it. Thanks for sharing much appreciated xx

I cross stitched for 40 Years on Aida. I've been doing other things lately like appliqué and quilting but decided to try over two with linen. I was so excited to start my project, a little one from Fat Quarter Country Cottage Needleworks for March Cottage. Its very hard for me to see the holes and think I need to get magnifier. I have a nice light but going to try the sewing method. I not going to give up but had to put it down. Thanks for the wonderful video you guys make my day.

That was a great video. I’ve always been an in-hand stitcher but I have never heard or seen that method of stitching. No wonder you ladies can stitch so fast! Time to learn the sewing style of stitching.

I’ve always cross-stitched “in hand”. It’s how I learned. I didn’t realize it was a method lol. I just thought it was weather someone could afford (or wanted to spend money on) a hoop. Interesting! Also, I think my favorite part is learning about the sewing method! I’ve never seen cross-stitch done like this. I want to learn how to do it. It looks so much faster.

I've been stitching forever and I've used many different techniques; one handed stick and stab, two handed stick and stab, sewing method, frames, hoops, qsnaps, in hand, all of those! For the majority of my projects in the past few years i have used qsnaps, but since I started watch The Real Housewives i have been stitching in hand and sewing method and I'm loving it! Thanks for giving me "permission" to do it however I want to!

I know your video is a few years old. I tried the stitching in hand method on my fabric with my lap stand and q snap. I just was able to start to feel comfortable with doing this method. When stitching right to left, I use my right hand, when stitching left to right I use my left hand. I am ambidextrous, so it makes it fast for me to go in both directions. I know that it is way different than what was demonstrated in your video, but I place my needle in the same places as you do. Thank you for the inspiration!!!

I've always avoided evenweave but now that I've seen how to work with it, I may try it! I prefer hand and sewing method vs. attached to a standing holder, I can go so much faster and on a holder it feels so stiff, THANKS for the clear instruction 👍

I watched you do the loop method to start and I about lost my mind. I’ve been cross stitching for almost twenty years and I’ve never even considered how easy that would be. I should have looked for RU-vid tips and tricks a lot sooner

Thanks for sharing. Chelsea's method of going horizontally is so different from what is normally shown to go vertical. I tried her method and noticed less wrist movements plus stitches comes out beautiful. So awesome.

I’ve been cross stitching for over 20 years and saw the loop method for the first time boy do I feel like a dope! My defense, I’m self taught. 🤓. Did they even have u tube 20 yrs ago? Lol. Thank ALWAYS Kimberly for everything you do!

Okay, Chelsea, wow, I loved watching you stitch. I have done it that way for years! How fun to see someone else stitching that way...and also without a hoop!

Great tutorial ladies! I stitch in hand but I'm a stabber from way back! I can't get the sewing method to work from my brain to my hand. It's a whole thing! But I'm a fast stabber, works for me. Practice either way makes perfect. I also use Wonder Clips and roll or fold my extra fabric. It gets all the bulk out of the way when you stitch in hand.

I use a hoop, but have wanted to try in hand. Your video was very informative. I take my needle to the back and put my hand under fabric to push the needle back thru. I think it would be faster in hand sewing method. That is how I do my embriodary.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! Cash is so cute! I learned something new when Chelsea was stitching horizontally. I will be stitching this way from now on. Priscilla, you make stitching into a "fully loaded hole" look so easy! My big roll of Monaco from FQS came in and I am going to review "The Real Housewives of Cross Stitch" tutorial on tea/ coffee dying this weekend and go for it! I too am thrifty with my fabrics! No 6" borders here! lol Kimberly, I used to stitch from time to time using the loop method and noticed my floss was shredding. I researched and found out that when one uses the loop method, half of the floss fibers are positioned so that one strand is going North, the other is going South, so they rub against each other and wear out instead of laying next to each other. I only use two "pulls" of floss at a time (so maybe this was too much floss), and only used DMC for the loop method, I don't use this method any more. Hopefully, this shredding will never happen to you. Happy Stitching!

I stitch in hand too ... not hardly as fast as you all do! I enjoyed the video and got a few tips too, like splitting the stitch when railroading. I didn’t know to do that. It makes a nice stitch. Thanks.

Wow, you certainly are fast! Also very accurate with the needle going into the holes. I also stitch in hand but it takes me a lot longer to find the holes even when stitching on Aida . Thanks for your demo. Cheers 🥰

I just started stitching again after years and was having trouble finding the right holes.. I think this method will also work better under the awesome magnifying light I just got. I also just ordered my first set of patterns from the housewives, so am anxious to try your method out! Thanks girls!

I stitch in hand and usually use DMC but have recently tried fancy floss and LOVE it!!

Love watching them stitch!! I learned their method off of their channel. I love stitching this way. It didn't take long to get the hang of it. I find it faster and easier. Thanks for the video!

I know this is an old video .. but maybe you will see this! I’ve been stitching since I was 8 so a longgg time. I’ve always been an “in hand” stitcher ... honestly always felt a little like I shouldn’t admit that, like it wasn’t the right way to do it... sooo your video made me so happy when I stumbled across it!! I’m just learning counted cross-stitch so I’m stabbing and having a challenge reading the patterns I have had tear out and start over I’m hoping to get it soon.

Thanks ladies for this video, it's the first time I've seen a good demo of railroading, so thank you! I stitch in hand using the sewing method but I go top to bottom of the stitch rather than sideways, possibly like Kimberley was showing. I roll my fabric in from the left so I have less bulk to hold, and I'm holding the backside of the fabric which will help reduce dirt on the front of the fabric( I wash my hands a lot tho, so it's never grubby).

...um....what?....I am a quilter of 20 years...I haven't crosstitched since the 80's and thought I'd pick it up again, as an easy 'take along' handwork project: Crosstitch in the 80's - white or cream Aida, 11 or 14 ct - Stab Method, DMC Floss Crosstitch Present Day - In Hand, Frame, Hoops, Linen, Evenweave, 1 over 2, 2 over 4 3 over 1,...tiny tiny can't see the holes fabric, overdye, hand dyes, fancy floss, file folder hanging floss thingee, download patterns, FlossTube....stitching in rows, stitching each X, I am completely at a loss....Would LOVE a 'From the very very very beginning' series... a complete Playlist right from the start...there is no stock of anything in our Michael's right now re: crosstitch except for some floss...no Aida or other cloth at all....shipping is basically weeks and weeks away, esp. if it has to come across the border ...sigh...maybe I will just go back to my quilting....

I am starting off with needle work and cross stitch, did it in the past but not as a hobby. What I saw some other flosstubers do is using a pool noodle then the fabric that is bunched up in your left hand you roll up on it with the write side of the work rolled up inside and the back side is where you hold it, then the needle work stays more clean as well.

I've heard the term railroading but didn't understand what or how to do it till this video. Definitely gonna try that technique in my next project. Thanks!

That video was great that is the first time I have ever seen it done that way. The question I have is which is the best way to begin I have always marked the center and then count to get my beginning point . I also wanted to know if I should do the outlines and borders first?

Thank you for the video. I can stitch in hand if stitching straight rows, otherwise, I use a hoop but keep it loose so I can use the sewing method. I stitch on linen, so sometimes it can get a little tricky, at least for me....but it goes so much faster...thank you again!

I am on my third cross stitch project and I really want to give 28 ct a try but was too scared. Just spent the past 3 hours stitching in hand after I watched this video like 3 times. I am doing it. I'm doing a small project on aida currently, but just ordered the state of Michigan map to stitch, and will be using Lugana opalescent 28 stitch. Would I be able to use this method with the Lugana?

I am happy to know that there are several methods and all them are ok. I do the same method as Kimberly but in hand.I am very comfortable with that. I had a good look at the 28ct. Monaco . I have always used Aida but love the linen look. My eyesight is not great, but I think I can see on Monaco. I’m going to get brave and try it. Thx so much for you sweet girls for the video.

I am stitching by hand using the sewing method for the first time. It does take getting used to.

I'm a new stitcher and have stitched in hand with the sewing method but didn't realize you could do it with a qsnap! I'll have to try that!.

Can you do this on linen? Since I do a lot of embroidery and for some unknown reason = the project I’m working on uses 40 count linen which I’m having difficulty with. I’m wondering if I should go to something like a 32 count or something. Is Monoco even weave? That might be an easier for me?

I wish I could have seen the holes on the Monaco fabric while you stitches it and maybe a little slower. I want to try Monaco but need to learn a little more I love watching both flosstube channels!

When you said you outlined the tree, what did you use to mark the tree, does it need to be something erase able?

This is how I stitch too only I am left handed so I stitch with my left hand and hold the fabric with my right hand works great for me! This is how my mom taught me many years ago and it still the best way for me. I cant do it with hoops or q snap and all other tools. Great video.

also if you complete one stitch at a time its easier to fix a mistake. I learned how to stitch in hand on my own. and I am so happy I've been doing it right . I do it just like you guys. I can't stand q-snaps , I own hoops too and I can't go back. I use anchors needles , I've had them for years and never bent or broke any at all . I've had m needles for over 20 years and they still look like new.

I've been cross stitching for over 20 years. I started with a starter kit and learned picking up tips along the way. What does the back of the projects look like? Also I've never seen it where you split the threads going back from right to left. What's the purpose of doing that?

I always thought you had to use a hoop,, this look so much easier. I am going to take mine out of the hoop now lol

I am just starting to use fancy floss and am having trouble with knots. Is this a problem with it are is it just me? Probably me 😀. Any suggestions? I’m using the length of floss from Classic Colorworks. Should I maybe use shorter lengths? Thanks for this video.

I tried the top stitching on Aida and I don't like it, because it make a ridge. I think Aida is too stiff of a fabric to stitch like that.

I’ve tried the sewing method but can’t get used to it. My tension is not even and my hand cramps up when wadding up the fabric.

Hello ladies! I would love to start stitching in hand but I am wondering about how you keep the tension even throughout the whole project. I had tried beating in hand when I was doing beaded Crosstitch but you could tell that my tension wasn’t consistent throughout the project and you could tell when the project was finished do you have any advice on keeping attention even during project? Great Video, When it comes to ways of stitching I am all over the place LLL But for the most part I stitch in hand, I also stitch backwards (RtoL then LtoR) Husband thinks I am a converted lefthander :P
