Stockholm is the capital of Sweden. It has the most populous urban area in Sweden as well as in Scandinavia. 1 million people live in the municipality, approximately 1.6 million in the urban area, and 2.4 million in the metropolitan area. The city stretches across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea. Outside the city to the east, and along the coast, is the island chain of the Stockholm archipelago. The area has been settled since the Stone Age, in the 6th millennium BC, and was founded as a city in 1252 by Swedish statesman Birger Jarl. It is also the county seat of Stockholm County.

I just saw this neighborhood mentioned in the news with the title "The new expensive neighborhood is on its way to becoming a slum." and had to look if there were any videos on youtube and ofc Mr. Daniel, this channel had it and is so good for documenting Stockholm. Many thanks! Hope we get to see an update come spring/summer 2024.

5:48 Totally agree. Must be one of the ugliest ever 8:07 Agreed again. Very ugly BUT 6:52 I totally disagree. As a bunch of modern buildings I think they look remarkably well (though I prefer older style buildings too). Especially the crimson color buildings to the far right I'd say they have burrowed few things from older Swedish buildings, such as the aligning facades, base, uniformity, and interesting colors. Anyway, I'm glad to see people who care about the way their cities look.

Hi Daniel! I'm curious as to what was in these areas before the buildings got made. Is there a specific reason for these buildings to exist? It's sad to see gentrification where it wasn't needed, but that's just my opinion. Anyways I love watching your videos so keep it up and never be shy to voice your opinions 👍🏼.
@Izbitzer
@Izbitzer Год назад
There was a big highway going right through this area before. The highway is now going through a tunnel underneath Hagastaden. There were no residential buildings there before, only some old industrial buildings, so the area has definitely improved a lot!
@almandragoran
@almandragoran Год назад
To expand on what Izbitzer said, Solna (which begins where the hospital is) and Stockholm was separated by a wide area of highways, railway tracks and warehouses. The Karolinska University Hospital (No. 1 i Europe) had grown out of its old buildings, so back in the 2000’s, it was decided that a new main building for the hospital was needed. When they started planing for the new hospital they realized that if they could build over the highway area, they could connect Solna and Stockholm, and create a new life-science cluster to take advantage of the Karolinska Institute and the hospital. So what they’ve done is that they built tunnels for the highway and the railway, and then built Hagastaden on top of the tunnels. Most of the big buildings you see in the video are office buildings and laboratory buildings for the life-science cluster, while the taller, thinner buildings are apartment buildings. The wide area between the rows of buildings and the round building on the end is going to be a park when it’s all finished. I would not call this a case of gentrification. Vasastan, the older area that Daniel walks through at the end, is a posh part of inner city Stockholm, and was so long before construction of Hagastaden began. The Solna side basically only had the hospital, and the residential neighborhoods on the other side of the hospital area has been sought after for a long time because of their proximity to the inner city.

Building beautiful does not have to be expensive. Sure if you wanna add some kind of golden ornament then that would be really expensive, but that is most certainly not required just to make a beautiful building. Just using some color and adding some kind of depth to it is just enough to make said building at the very least nice to look at. If you'd maybe want to learn more about this subject, I recommend checking out the channel "The Aesthetic City" they've done a lot of great videos covering this subject.

While the aesthetics of this area may not be considered appealing, the significance of this contemporary architecture should not be overlooked. These structures offer practical advantages, being easier to construct and better suited for functions related to work, finance, and development. Classical buildings, although revered for their timeless beauty, may not align as seamlessly with the practical demands of modern functionality as these more contemporary designs do.
@markuserikssen
@markuserikssen 2 месяца назад
Modern buildings are often practical for sure, but if that's the main goal, our cities will not become more beautiful, but actually the opposite of that. The majority of people don't like modernist architecture or prefer classical architecture. You can also build beautiful classical buildings that live up to the modern standards of today. Buildings that actually look nice and are practical as well. I'm not saying classical architecture is the only solution, but it's what most people prefer. I feel like architects and project developers are using modernist ideas as a blueprint but failing to make cities look appealing and nicer for residents and visitors. This is especially the case in Scandinavia, where the climate is harsh and concrete gray boxes don't add anything beautiful to cities.
@jonathan130
@jonathan130 2 месяца назад

@markuserikssen
@markuserikssen 2 месяца назад
@@jonathan130 Maybe if you look at the overall picture, it looks decent, but if you zoom in on individual buildings, it looks bad. Also because there are hardly any really old buildings left in big parts of the city, so you don't have much to compare to. Modern could definitely look nice, as long as it fits in the right context. Many cities have lost the "battle" and have become a mess in that way. The thing with today's modern buildings is that many are poorly designed. They use the wrong materials, don't fit in with surrounding buildings or the climate, etc.

This video is a proof of lack of preparation and knowledge. Just a folk walking around, pointing fingers without even knowing the project. The park will come. A section of Tekniska Museet will come also. Restaurants too. You need to give time. Look at what is being done now and prospect the future instead of living in a closed mind box. Architecture develops, cities develop. Areas like this help boost the economy with jobs and services and also make social life more dynamic. Next time inform yourself before doing this. Hagastaden is meant to be ready in 2030 and aims to be a reference in the research and medical areas. No is forced to like for sure, but everyone should inform themselves before being so judgemental. I challenge you to do a new one where you add pics and videos of what will come up in the future. Visit Stockholm Växer for example.

@letswalkaroundstockholm There is a difference between walking unprepared and just criticising without any knowledge. You don't have to like the architecture but when you say there is no Park, no garden you just have to walk a little further down and in front of Coop you have a park already made. Naming this the ugliest neighbourhood is quite harsh. Which criteria do you base your ideas on? Rome wasn't done in a day. But since the idea is to walk around, next time visit Hagastaden in full, as you just visited one street. Go further down the park. I think channels like this have a social responsibility to inform people and not be just critical without informing yourself. 😉

It honestly needs stone and colors to bring in the Stockholm vibe... The architectural design really sucks

as sacred geometric architecture is reduced to nothing so goes spiritual perception. It will leave subtly and one will not realize what is wrong. By then it is too late.

According to Google Maps Hagastaden lies outside Stockholm, so the title is a little misleading. Still can’t wait to see what Swede considers an ugly neighborhood.😊

Then Google Maps is wrong. It is literally downtown

Now I see. For some reason Google treats Stockholm City Centre as the City of Stockholm proper. Curious though that no one has tried to make things right.

Hagastaden is in both Stockholm and Solna. It is right on the border between those municipalities. You cannot call Hagastaden "downtown". The name itself indicates that it is a "city of its own". For example, Nya Karloinska (hospital) is located in Solna.

@@magnuspersson1433Yes I know. Its literally 100m from Odenplan trainstation. I call that down town. Its 25min walk from Central Station.

Sadly 99.9% of new buildings in Stockholm are either in brown, gray, white, black or rust.... That's so incredibly depressing. The "nyfunkis" communism is so incredibly deeply rooted in Stockholm now. I really miss the era of postmodernism during the 80's, 90's and early 00's before it got strictly forbidden to build anything but "nyfunkis" here. The culture elite here in Stockholm thinks that the nyfunkis style is superior to anything and are considered as world heritages. But Hagastaden is decent, some looks okay or a bit better while some are ugly. While almost everything outside Hagastaden built during the 10 latest years looks waaaaaaaay worser than this, like Årsta.... fyfan helvetes!
