Lint can also be used as padding in a quilt like cover. Can use two blankets, layer one with lint, lay other blanket over it and sew together, making sure to sew all across the blankets in crisscross pattern to hold lint in place. Very warm.

We definitely hoard. I am happy with it. The more food and paper products, medical supplies, firewood, and the list goes on…..the better off we are. I'm homeless and I'm also a prepper. I collect clothes that are too big and a couple sizes down. I fluctuate from winter to summer sometimes as much as 30 pounds. I also dehydrate and vacuum seal tons of food. The food banks give out tons of canned beans, I just smash them out thin and dehydrate them in the sun and vacuum seal it. With all my combined caches I could survive a year without resupply. Also have a dental plier set, so many died in old days from dental infections. This is for all that say, Homeless with internet? I use T-Mobile $25 a month prepaid, 10g data, unlimited calls and text. I tether to my tablet and laptop. I also work from my ebike washing windows. I was talking to my 77 year old mother and she was talking about her parents who immigrated. And she said “food was free” when I was a child. I was like what??? We stocked up on cheap coffee filters for initial water filtration: our Berkey and Life Straws are great but increase their life span by running outside water through a coffee filter first. It'll get out the heavier debris. Great list here!
@chanchan5349
@chanchan5349 3 месяца назад
You can start the filter process with a cotton pillowcase inside a 5 gallon bucket. It will filter bigger debris then go to large coffee filters, and then the life straw (or whatever) as a final filter. It’ll save on the final filter.
@gsdalpha1358
@gsdalpha1358 3 месяца назад
@@chanchan5349 Love the pillowcase as the initial filter suggestion! That would filter bigger quantities of water faster; using a coffee filter can be slow as debris clogs it. But if the pillowcase has already caught leaves, twigs, etc, the coffee filter would have an easier time getting finer particles out. Thank you!

I live in a senior apartment building. We’re not allowed guns. In our apartment or garage we can’t have them. I don’t think most of the people have any stockpiles of food or water. If SHTF happens I’m sure everyone will be asking who has food and water? They have master keys to all apartments so they could come in and take it. I’m hiding some but still. If it gets life and death I will probably not make it. If there’s time I could go to my sisters. She lives on a farm, no garden or anything, but easier to defend. She has guns and training. I pray every day it doesn’t get that bad.

Install a secure "safe" in the trunk of your car and lock a stainless steel pistol in it that no one knows about. If your sister is Ok with you coming to her farm when SHTF, see if she would mind if you keep an AR-15 rifle, ammo and magazines in a safe on her farm. Keep Prepping my friend.

Can you afford a storage shed? If you can then get one close by and start putting stuff in it. Water, food, guns, camping gear, seeds for garden. Saws, drill bits, hand crank drill. Start a garden now at your sister's. Every little bit now helps for later. Get a small enough gun to hide on you or in apartment. You can hide one easily. Better to have it if they have master keys. Get rid of bed frame and make five gallon buckets your frame or a bunch of small totes your frame and store preps in them. Make each tote preps for a month say if you can only grab one then you can live off it until you get to your sister's. Get a vest from bass pro type place one with pockets and put lighters, first aid, knife, and what ever else in it. You can throw it on then grab bugout bag and totes. I'd rather have totes in storage locker if I could. Can you move in with your sister now? Is there room? Will you kill each other living together? Re-assess why you in retirement village. Can you afford townhouse closer to your sisters? Explore every option. How's your vehicle? Maintenance updated? Tires good? If SUV get 10 ply tires they are tougher and tend to last longer. Paper maps and survival gear can be in car too just don't make it look enticing to thieves. Tell no one of your preps because they will expect you to take care of them.

@@thuggineternal I just use the lid it came with to do sterile rags. Sometimes people will reuse the jars from the grocery store with the original lid for food but I’m not comfortable with that. @rcinsley
@rcinsley 4 месяца назад
@@thuggineternal I've never seen new lids & rings for most pasta jars, but a few brands (Classico, for example) are packed in glass jars that use a "regular" size Ball jar lid. Any size glass jar that takes one of the standard Ball lids/rings will be reusable. If I buy new Ball jars from WM or Amazon, they cost about $1.25. Currently, I can buy the 24 oz. "Classico Family Favorites red sauce" for $2.16 from the same merchants. That's $0.91 for the sauce and $1.25 for the reusable jar! A new Ball lid will add $0.50 or less to the overall cost of the sauce + reusable jar. As an added bonus, the 24 oz. jars (1.5 pint) are an unusual size that work particularly well for a few of the sauces & stews I pressure can.

The few things I will add are patching material for clothes and shoes. For shoes I go with Shoe Goo. For clothes I go with denim (at least a couple of yards but if you want to have something to barter with go for a full bolt), a sewing kit (with lots of thread and spare needles) and Bish’s Original Tear Mender. Take care.

I p/u those very small cup cake liners from $ Tree. Fill with sawdust or very small wood chips. Pour melted old candles over them to the top. Let harden. These make the best & quickest fire starters. They burn quite a while so even if wood waS wet or snow they give you plenty of time to get fire started. You get like 50 of these liners in each package.

Zippo lighters are relatively cheap and always dependable. You can run them on almost any flammable liquid if necessary. Just stockpile a lot of flints. Also, those newfangled electric arc lighters are windproof, waterproof and rechargeable. If you have a solar charger, they'll last for years even if the grid is down. In Minnesota (and I'm sure, MI), fire is very high priority if the SHTF. And, yeah, Menard's is a great place for preppers.

I play a maintenance guy in real life, and I use a multi tool every day several times a day. From personal experience the full size multi tools, despite being a pain to carry everyday are essential. I tried carrying the little ones to no avail, they are particularly useless. On another note, I get the concept of carrying multiple types of fire starters, however you would do better carrying more of one or two different types. Especially in wet conditions you will burn through those alot more frequently than you can imagine. I personally carry alot of two types. A Bic and alot of tinder (like lint or cotton) and a magnesium stick as a back up. Buy bics they last forever even with daily use. Those cheap ones break and leak, not worth the trouble in my opinion.

I'd get a good pack size of glow sticks and cycle those out. The expiration date on those is actually years after. And them a good flashlight with a good set of rechargeable batteries.

One of the most overlooked items that people should consider is paper and pencils/pens. We use electronics to track inventory, but an EMP or CME can take that out. Make sure you have binders and sheet protectors to help documents last and stay organized! Also, cards, dice, yo-yos, fidget gadgets... things to replace our dependence on smart phones and streaming services. Oil lamps, candles, solar landscape lights... Save your flashlights for specific tasks. Buy old shirts on last day of garage sales for huge discounts and cut them into rags. If you drink a lot of coffee or soda, buy caffeine tablets to help you avoid headaches as you step down when it's to expensive or unavailable. Whiskey and vodka... used in a lot of home remedies. ChapStick. Soon protectant and not just for lips but for scratches and cuts, too. Great for making fire starters. Strong fishing line also works for snares and sewing heavy material. Non-electric hand tools and appliances: flour and coffee mills, hand pump syphons, customs and hand/waist brace drills, reel mower, egg beaters, manually air pumps, etc. Tape, tape, and more tape. Duct tape, electrical tape, packing tape, and medical tape. Have tons of it!

I'd once ate for most of a week, on 2 Bonita, which I'd cleaned and salted into Ziploc bags... They got stained from the iodine in the salt; but, provided nourishment!

With radios, yes, for when the SHTF might happen, it's good to have a HF Ham Transceiver (whether you are a licensed Ham operator or not) as they might be the only form of (unofficial) communications available to 'mavericks' over long distances, but, (being a bit of a 70's and 80's Citizen's Band veteran) don't neglect learning up on how to properly set up your transmitting antenna anywhere,, and tuning your antenna transmitting element length (or sub length) to the correct Standing Wave Ratio [SWR] for the frequency/band you have selected to transmit on, or your most expensive Kenwood (or whatever) will be usless to you (and to whoever is trying to undeestand what you are trying to transmit), and especially if you bliw your final transmission transistor. With Radio Receivers, try to get those whose receptions cover the entire radio trasmissiin spectrum (short wave etc) as somewhere in amonst thst spectrum someone might be transmitting someting important (and your familiar local MSM radiio stations might be non existent - if not just active propaganda platforms). And learn how to read Morse Code if you do not already know [well, at least have a hard copy of it availabke], ...yes, it is still a thing. Cheers.

Sometimes you can find things on clearance fairly cheap. We found some coin cell batteries on clearance for a fraction of what they would have been at wallyworld. Also, your green ball cap looks like mine do after a hot Texas summer. I end up having to rotate hats and wash mine more than once during the hot months otherwise they get really badly stained (that sometimes doesn't come out). Still functional but wife doesn't like to be seen with me if it gets bad enough.
