I use this philosophy in almost everything except when talking about people. People have value, have feelings and we should be concerned sometimes. If a friend tells you his father have died you can't just say, well it would have happened anyway. No, its sad and you have to show empathy.

That’s cause you’re a man my friend a natural aspect of masculinity is stoicism that’s why it’s such a practical concept from a philosophical perspective

@@SantiagoRodriguez-fe6ng stoicism isn’t the rejection of pleasure bruh that’s an extension of it when it became a doctrinal philosophy stoicism at its core is having emotional intelligence and control something that men have always needed due to having to protect our respective people’s, provide for said people and go to war also learn how to spell its *raping* and there’s many different reasons rape can occur and many different definitions of it it seems you don’t really have that strong of an understanding of history I’d suggest doing some more research on it

@@Saber23 About the word rape, sorry english isn't my first language. I wouldn't be so sure that emotional intelgence is the skill ypu are refering to. I think most men just repress their feelings and emotions with the purpose that you already mention. Also men in more control of their emotions? Men are more prone to make risky choices and behaviors.

I think a stoic would emphasize moderation with respect to physical pleasures. For example, there's nothing wrong with drinking alcohol, but "the wise man" would avoid getting drunk.

To the Determinists, the only illusion that we should allow ourself to indulge in is the illusion of free will, not the illusion (don't you dare to even hope) that you can somehow change your fate.

Ancient roman society was before modern religions. I’d recommend listening to “in our culture: philosophy” “stoicism” they go into detail about it

@@notasimp108 I’ll give it a listen, but I’m still confused. I know it was before modern religions, but it is heavily steeped in Greco-Roman paganism. Can the two be separated? Does what you recommended to me address that?

Living for physical pleasure is not stoic. He briefly covered virtues but didn't go into much detail. Stoics make sure that their every action reflects the 4 stoic virtues, courage, wisdom, temperance, and justice. So if you are using "one last time" make sure that your actions are as virtuous as possible because any moment can be your last chance to live a life worth living. And if you don't die so fast, you will have built a truly amazing life with all these last moment. Do you want to go out like stoic boss or like a weak pleasure seeking hedonist?

The technique that was taught to me by Massimo Pigliucci (per my memory) for dealing with losses is to treat everything you owned or will ever own as books borrowed from this library called our universe. Sooner or later, the universe would want the books back. This includes your loved ones, your friends, and your limbs. Just enjoy it while it last.

It is really problematic to view ancient Greek philosophy from 2000 years of Christianity standpoint. Even the meaning of the words get twisted beyond recognition. For example souls, god worshipping , daimon, ethics, arete, virtue, etc. Suffice to say, Stoicism is really just rebranding of Socrates's teaching, together with new-flanged logical rational way of thinking (that no one bother to teach), with entry-level mastery of logos. Also, from time to time, content of Stoicism lessons was modified in order to make it suitable as part of the education of young rich kids. Stoicism was always the more popular philosophy because of it's middle ground approach compared to Epicureanism (the popular form of hedonism), Pyrrhonism (the popular form of skepticism which you though was conservatism), Platonism (Plato's rebranding of Socrates's teaching), and Peripatetic (Aristotle's rebranding of Socrates's teaching). Why is Socrates's teaching considered middle ground? It is just simple fact that if you try experience as many different option as possible (in a safe and controlled manner, remember that we are talking about rich kids here), then you will automatically choose the appropriate action. This is the real meaning of equanimity (balance of the mind). Knowledge is virtue, ignorance is vice. If you have the correct knowledge, you automatically choose the right action. Why Plato's (best student) and Aristotle's (best student of best student) brand of Socratism was not the most popular, compared to Zeno of Citium (outsider, never meet Socrates)'s Stoicism? I don't really know. Maybe those additional metaphysic stuffs was useless? Perhaps Socrates was just a really simple guy? When Socrates said he knows nothings, it just means that he has so much knowledge that all new knowledge started to invalidate existing knowledge. He was not trying to be cheeky. When Socrates uses his Socratic Method™, he'd never intended to burst other people balls or to show the deficiency of others. He simply wanted to learn even if the other people only have fragmented knowledge inside them.
