Stoicism for Inner Peace (book): einzelganger.co/innerpeace
Although he never considered himself a philosopher, Marcus Aurelius’ writings have become one of the most significant ancient Stoic scriptures. His ‘Meditations’ contain a series of notes to himself based on Stoic ideas, one of which is embracing fate and living conformably to the demands of nature.
Instead of wanting things to happen as we wish, we’re better off accepting the universe, according to Marcus Aurelius, and developing a flexible attitude towards the outside world while being strict with ourselves (Stop Wanting, Start Accepting | The Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius)

One of my favourite stoic quotes is "If a person speaks ill of you, it's either true, or false. If it's true, then you should accept it as who you are. If it's false, then accept them as foolish, and their opinion can be disregarded"

Let me add, if someone speaks ill about you and you are offended, that means deep inside you know it's true. If it's not offending you whatsoever, that means it's not true. And the person judging actually has the characteristic that he/she is judging you without realizing it.

Precisely. Half of understanding existence on Earth is knowing what you HAVE control over (very little) and what you do not hold sway upon (almost everything). Reflection is key, though. Humanity SHOULD dare to look deep within, but it should also understand that more than the mere physical aspect of such Reflection is required for true, celestial enlightenment. "Before I start, I must see my end. Destination known, my mind's journey now begins. Upon my chariot, heart and soul's fate revealed. In Time, all points converge; hope's strength resteeled. But to earn final peace at the Universe's endless refrain, we must see all in nothingness... before we start again." 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨ --Diamond Dragons (series)

@adamcomerford8502...Good comment, When we look at relationship videos, and our human faults... embracing Stoicism makes sense. Most people, including the younger, forget that when we have significant others in our lives, we bring all our shortcomings to the relationship. I have found most life-coaches to comment that time away from that other is imperative. ...both need to heal, and grow. Question: Did your loss, a year ago, turn into a win for you and that other one? Sometimes, with ego aside, love can re-flourish. Thanks from Darrell. 😇

The optics from my view as a guy in his early 70's (very healthy and "capable", LOL), is that most problems younger men and women encounter, come from our own Hubris, for want' of a better word...absurdly high expectations. You tube has excellent relationship coaches, who talk about these issues. I am thankful that my marriage of 25 years is solid. (Her father raised her with Stoic principals). Finding one's Soulmate" takes some real maturity, and a confluence of factors based upon timing. Stoicism, as an excellent tool, brings forth a common thread thru, enabling love, but with honest-wide open eyes, concerning our own motivations, not so much theirs, since we are only in control of our own motives. To close: My wife, ex-wife and I are friends, without long-remembered 'hurt tarnishing our relationship. A relationship guru once said: "If you are not in breakdown, or buildup with your significant other, you are NOT in relationship", but living a fraud...a rather extreme "call to action" quote, LOL. I should pray for acceptance, strength and courage to face adversity instead of praying that it shouldn't happen to me because no life is perfect. I should let go of my wants and desires and be grateful to what I already have and just let the universe do what it supposed to do with me. Let things happen, happen.

@ Marcus Aurelius wasn't black. Neither the people around him. Overcompensating By portraying every historical figure as black because blacks have been "underrepresented" in media doesn't help them in a positive way, same as what parents do with their kids when they think they screwed up, they try to make them feel good giving them in excess. As a result kids just become spoiled.

"Instead of hoping for a life free of misfortune, it's better to wish ourselves the fortitude to handle adversity." Then isn't it better to do what's up to you--like a free man--than to be passively controlled by what isn't, like a slave or beggar?" Marcus Aurelius These quotes remind me of a passage in Steps to Knowledge by Marshall Vian Summers about suffering and blame. Here is an excerpt: "Pain is always a decision that you make in response to any stimuli in your environment. The body will have physical pain if it is so stimulated, but that is merely a sensory response. It is not the true pain that hurts you. The pain that hurts you is the crown of thorns of your own ideas and assumptions, your own misgivings and misinformation and your own unforgiveness towards yourself and the world.... You may feel that you have been wronged by another or by the world... This, however, is not how Knowledge views you, and you must learn not to view yourself in this way... Without condemnation upon the world and upon yourself, the mind is at peace already." (Marshall Vian Summers, Steps to Knowledge)

True! As Jordan Peterson said Pursue 'Meaning of Life'......rather than 'Happiness in Life'. The reason being 'happiness'.. is also fading just as sadness. You can be happy in the morning but sad in the noon and happy in evening and again become sad in the night. The circumstances in life directly dictates the happiness variables. Therefore focusing only on being happy as the only absolute goal robs us away from living a 'fulfilled' life. Live a meaningful life by accepting death and sickness as the very basis of our fragile life, happiness to be enjoyed every time as it doesn't last, sadness with grace as there will be sunlight tomorrow, challanges and adversities to be faced with an understanding that it is profound structure that makes our life of what it is and the very meaning of our existence. Despite all this life fragility, yet still offering our most responsible contribution to the family and society will help us to live a meaningful life in its highest order because we know that sufferings and happiness, both makes up the very 'meaning of life'. So, pursuing the meaning of life and not just happiness......will make us live a more 'Fullfilling life'.

I think we need to distinguish what we NEED from what we WANT. We can accept not having what we want, but we can never accept not having what we need and I don't think we'll ever be happy or satisfied without it. I have let go of professional or financial ambitions and I feel better for it, I have let go of dreams of a happy marriage and children and I'm at peace. But I would never be happy or whole being completely isolated, without feeling love and care from others. That's a need. Needs need to be fulfilled. That's what I think.
@RaeganSealy
@RaeganSealy 2 года назад
I also wonder sometimes how much finding contentment in letting go of professional, financial or personal ambitions is actually holding us back - allowing us to feel okay settling for less than we want when actually sometimes it is good to embrace wants and needs, it is good to strive for something, it is good to have goals - even if we might never reach them. Finding joy in the pursuit no matter the outcome seems more healthy to me than finding joy in giving up the pursuit.
@gianellab.4953
@gianellab.4953 2 года назад
@@RaeganSealy Yes! That is what I meant by fulfilling your needs. There are universal needs, of course (food, shelter), but there are also individual needs that vary from one person to the next. For some it will be professional ambitions, for others a family. We shouldn't try to let these go because that will simply make us unhappy. We should fulfill them to find wholeness. But you are right, trying does not mean succeeding, so fulfillment should be in the journey and not the outcome!

This video is really about what reality is and why, at a basic level, it is the same for everyone. The one who understands that the future is just our attempt to predict events based on a bunch of similar events lived, is not upset when his prediction does not come true, because he knew that the percentage there is less than 30. A person who understands that mistakes are a great opportunity to learn something and that understanding how bad you are is only an indicator of control over the situation, is not afraid to make mistakes. A person who understands how the process of the formation of the psyche takes place does not get angry at people who just live their lives. The first thing a psychologist does when you come to a session is trying to fix your psyche. Second, he is trying to teach you about your psyche so that you can fix it yourself. Simply understanding a thing opens up every way for you to interact with it, which is far more than anyone else is willing to give you.

Thanks, and ordered your book....Had to comment again on your words to live by, 3 months later. Watching relationship videos forces us to aware of our foibles. Marriage coaches encounter these repetitive reactions amongst men and women's relationships,, to the point where they do not hear themselves, nor the other one. We go back to growing our Stoic principles, gather strength, and approach issues with new eyes. This tool definitely helps take us our of the constant negative cycle. The all too painful relationships we trash, regret, and eventually grow over, teach us as we mature, to hold our tongue when triggered, not easy, but to consider not throwing away that which is good and pure. I continue to look for those stories which include a real healing component, as there is too much inherent evil when relationships run awry. Men and women have a terrific capacity for reconciliation. Thanks for your channel, Einzelganger. And, those who provide feedback from a position of growth and awareness, are proof of positive healing-change.

I remember my abuser saying things like the quotes in this video to keep justifying his abuse and feel good and right about it. He use to say “I am not being abusive you are too sensitive, I am helping you getting stronger” It’s a shame that narcissistic people use Marcus Aurelius quotes to continue their abuse and drive people to insanity or suicide. So many have died because of enablers saying to them “you are to sensitive”, “is not what he/she are saying is what you let in”. If it’s a complete different scenario when a stranger bully you walking away and not “let it in” is easier but when the abuser is a parent, a partner, a husband or wife and you have kids that don’t want to share custody because the kids will suffer their abuse during custody time, when is a boss or a coworker and you cannot leave your job, etc. In this instance it’s impossible not to “let it in” because the abuse the bullying is constant. You cannot pretend you are not being abuse because you really are. Let stop the enabling and start acknowledging the harm of emotional abuse and be a light of support for those who needs it by acknowledging their pain and say “this shouldn’t be happening and he/she shouldn’t be treating you this way, I am here for you and not on the abuser side I am on your side” and helping finding them tools to remove themselves from the situation and most important calling things by their name - bullying and emotional abuse

Some stoic master should answer this...
@pervertlumine7909
@pervertlumine7909 2 года назад
I don't recall a single thing about Marcus saying that emotional abuse should not be escaped from. It is not that he encourages to refuse feeling negative emotions, it is that he encourages to accept things as it is, that you can't really do anything because the world will continue to change, and humans by nature is not entirely changeable unless they are in a certain phase of life. Acceptance means not giving in, but acknowledging that it is that way because that is what is happening. No one can escape from transcience. No one can stop human nature. So don't let it come into your head. Be accepting of the nature of existence, yet be a person of moral and be strict of one's self. I was once in a phase in life where I had a grudge against the entire world. I cared about things that were out of control. My head was a mess. I often asked myself, why is it like this? Why is the entire world like this? Then I stumbled upon stoicism and it helped me with my overthinking that only gave stress to my mind. Since then, my emotions have been preserved only for myself, but still have the heart to provide comfort and empathy for others. These people you mention who use the quotes of Marcus Aurelius do not have the belief of stoicism. Stoicism is about self-preservation, not justifying one's immoral action. You've clearly misunderstood his message, though I agree someone with a soft heart won't be able to process stoicism. It is not selfish. How you treat yourself is how you treat others. People who suffer from emotional pain tend to overthink and repeat negative words inside their head. They worry about what others think, they worry about their future. However, Stoicism teaches them to be more accepting of it. I mean, what else can you do besides to continue walking in life? Overthinking about things is a waste of time and energy. Let your emotions be calm. Not rampant. If you accept everything, you accept your emotions. If you accept your emotions, you take care of your emotions. If you take care of your emotions, you will have a better outlook and living.
