The coloured flags is for formal uniforms,the one they told you to keep clean and tight so you can wear it on ceremonies or when you travel back home.The dark themed flags are the ones you wear on missions/operations or inside the camp and generally you patch it on your everyday uniforms.Same goes for the name patch,black themed with white letters are formal and brown themes black letters for operations. At least this is for my country,i don;t know about U.S. uniform regulations
