Stomach Causing Palpitations?

Is your stomach causing your heart palpitations? Probably yes. Finally a cardiologist confirms the association between hiatal hernia and heart palpitations. Watch Dr. Vikki new video on the topic.
Summary of the video
Stomach-related palpitations can be caused by a hiatal hernia or inflammation of the gut, and can be treated through natural modalities to address root causes without drugs or surgery.
00:00
If you've experienced heart palpitations, pressure in your chest, and visited the ER only to be told your heart is fine, it may be related to hiatal hernia syndrome.
01:23
Stomach bloating and inflammation can cause the diaphragm to pinch the heart, leading to palpitations, a condition called gastric cardio syndrome.Expand
03:32
The vagus nerve, which goes to both the heart and stomach, can cause palpitations if overly stimulated or irritated, but is also responsible for slowing the heart and needs to function in a balanced way.
04:37
The natural pacemaker in the heart keeps the pace right, but if the vagus nerve is irritated and heart rate goes too low, other parts of the heart will stimulate and cause heart palpitations or ectopic beats.
05:39
The program deals with anatomical changes, inflammation of the gut, positioning of the diaphragm, and normalization of vagus nerve function through natural modalities to treat stomach-related palpitations without drugs or surgery.
06:55
Aspirin can cause inflammation in the gut and proton pump inhibitors can prevent absorption of key minerals and vitamins important for regular heart rhythm, so it's important to consider alternatives and address root causes.
08:36
The root cause of stomach-related palpitations is often a hiatal hernia or hiatal hernia syndrome, which can cause pinching on the heart and change its location.
09:34
People with stomach issues may experience palpitations that are often misdiagnosed as anxiety and treated with psychiatric medication, when in reality there is an easy solution.

I am under the impression that - generally speaking - people who experience very good results with keto do so because they used to eat bad a normal diet: white pizza, white pasta, white bread, not enough raw and cooked vegetables. Switching to a ketogenic diet makes them get rid of junk food (mostly "white" cereal derivatives, junk carbohydrates) excess fried food (French chips) and "forces" them to actually eat more vegetables. Was that your case?

I've had a very similar problem for a long time. PVC's, inappropriate sinus tachycardia, all linked to gut events. In my case seems to be originating in the small intestine area. I've had cardiologists tell me that there is nothing in my gut that can affect my heart - one even yelled at me when I begged to differ with him. Gastroenterologists never heard of such a thing and neurologist suggesting there's some other underlying problem. Each one referring me back to one of the others. It's simply amazing to me that these specialists, with all their training, have no clue about any of this, with the exception of a very few special physicians, like Dr Petersen.

My son and I have had this issue since we were quite young and like you was told the stomach has nothing to do with it despite the fact that the worst episodes were always preceded with stomach issues... which the medical system had no answer for either! Very disillusioned with our medical training and system, it is sicker than the patients they are supposed to help. Health and nutrition which go hand and hand, are disregarded, while drugs and procedures are used to treat symptoms, but never fix the cause. We have no healthcare system, only sickness maintenance, and despite the costs, some 3rd world countries have better health!!!

I don’t know why people take PPIs. My gastroenterologist of course recommended it for my hiatal hernia, but what actually fixes the problem is apple cider vinegar. Love love love love Dr. Gupta, and I’m glad to see him referenced somewhere! I was also offered anti anxiety meds (did not take) and with careful eating and ACV, when I have tachycardia, I know why and no longer go to the ER. That said, I also got a full cardio work up, and I know my heart is fine. And I don’t care how this sounds, but I’m extra careful in the 5 days leading up to the new and full moons. Tracking showed me the pattern of when I felt the worst, and this pattern is real.

All of this. And I think the full moon and new moon connection has to do with parasite activity in the body. Another factor that plays into this whole thing. When you lower stomach acid with a PPI or via daily stress, it allows parasites to take hold in the body. Further contributing to inflammation and mineral and vitamin deficiencies. It’s one big perfect storm. With the solution being to raise your stomach acid. Which is why ACV works so well. But then the parasite infection that’s leftover from the stomach acid being too low needs to be addressed as well. At least that’s my theory so far.

100% correct. I first discovered my lactose intolerance caused it, then also gluten intolerance. So ever since I controlled this, plus taking potassium and magnesium has brought it mostly under control. So yes, fully diet related, inflammation related. Sanjay Gupta also says the same. Inflammation of the vagus nerve could conceivably inhibit its function, causing excessive sympathetic tone, and therefore excitability of the heart. Protein pump inhibitors reduce the gastric breakdown of protein rich food, delaying gastric emptying with bloating, pericardial, and vagal irritation, as well as inhibit the closure of the lower esophageal sphincter with esophagitis, and ultimately heart palpitations.

This happens to me alot. Same problem. In 99.9% of all cases when this happens to me, I stand still and upright for a minute or so. Once I manage to burp properly and thoroughly, the condition goes over. In the vast majority of all cases it's literally gas in my stomach. Burp thoroughly and it's over.

At age 37 I was having serious palpitations and arrhythmia. After EKGs, Stress Tests and even an Angiogram, I-was told that my heart was “in great shape for my age”. The problem?? Lactose intolerance! I had no idea what it was, but knew what preceded the palpitations. A Holter EKG finally proved my case! After a “ forbidden” meal, the cardiologist’s only response was, “very interesting EKG!” I had to diagnose mt problem.

This might be helpful to know...I had congestive heart failure 15 years ago and developed afib which I still have, now controlled with meds. Sometimes my heart gets out of control and I get the fish flopping in my chest feeling. To keep this short, I eventually traced it to having too much of a bowel movement waiting down there, especially if it had a lot of gas. I go to the bathroom and my heart returns to normal. I was scared I was having another heart attack, I've had a few of those, until I figured this out. Some connection between heart and intestines in the neural net that surrounds the organs I guess.

The right side Vagus innervates right side of the Colon (your right that is), including the Caecum & Appendix, the whole of the Ascending Colon, and over half of the Transverse Colon. So, an Autonomic link in your case is not far fetched at all, if those areas are distended and affect the Vagus network, which in turn runs up and very close to the heart.

Although I was not diagnosed, I believe I had a hiatal hernia (mild) before. When I crotched and bent forward sometimes, I would feel my heart beat faster for some reason. It was really freaky until I did some RU-vid research. Someone recommended in another video's comments about in the morning when you get up, drink a glass of warm water, and do 50 jumping jacks. This supposedly helped to reposition your diaphragm/stomach to its more proper location. Well it worked for me. I also have a lot of gastro issues and bloating. I believe this pushes your diaphragm/stomach out of position slightly affecting the nerve and thus heart.

i have had an irregular heart beat since i was about 7. i noticed it when i jumped into a very cold swimming pool. not had it again until i was a police officer and when i was in cold weather, i got the odd beats.. but later in life, it was so often, i had many tests and wore the heart monitor.. it showed insane amounts of irreg beats, but they said i was fine. soooo, i said that i learned about the vegas nerve and my info was pushed aside and they said that cant be it. so, here i am, years later, dealing with this alone. its flip flopping now as i post this. i did have insane stomach pain a few months ago, and finally got tested for h. pylori. (a bad bacteria that tears up the inner lining of the lower stomach and the biggest cause of stomach cancer. soooo, finally that was cured, but still having issues of gerd and heart issues. so, its suggested to get an endoscopy but im afraid to do that. not a fan of that idea.

And no I didn’t get the vaccine… Anyway, I have had 2 times where they were so severe it was almost happening once a minute. Iv been to the ER, been to the cardiologist, had the holter monitor and echo and all came back normal. I then thought it was a hiatal hernia, went to visit a specialist and got X-rays etc. all normal too. Mind boggling.

I've had this for years. I'm 51. I'd get periodic heart flutters/PVCs that always seemed to follow gastric issues like when I'd eaten a big meal way too fast and I'd be bloated, gurgling, reflux etc. Last December I had bad indigesion for about a week and it wasn't going away and it woke me one night and I couldn't get back to sleep. I decided to check it out the next morning in a local ER, and I was convinced it was a gastric, maybe an Ulcer. Within minutes, they told me, no, you idiot you've had a significant heart attack, maybe several and we need to get you sorted right now 🤣So, straight to the cath lab and 1 completely blocked artery and another badly blocked artery found and Stents put in. Now, all is well, no more flutters, resting heart rate is 51, BP right down to 112/65 with the meds. The point is, don't ever assume discomfort is gastric, go to the ER and get yourself checked with an ECG and cardiac markers. I waited too long, it was around 12 hours from heart attack to Stent, and now a small part of my heart is dead. Not too serious fortunately, it's in the right side of the heart and overall my heart is very good nick.

yesterday I stumbled on Dr. Gupta's You Tube video on this subject and I'm pretty sure I have this syndrome. After multiple trips to the ER over the years with crushing upper chest pain and having the event diagnosed as an 'anxiety attack', I began telling both my gastroenterologist and cardiologist that I think this these 'attacks' are starting somewhere in my gut. The cardiologist didn't seem to be as stunned by this as my gastro doc, but gastro didn't seem to even seem to consider it. I do have a Schatzki ring in my esophagus and it has been stretched 3 times I think. I had a heart attack in July of this year, but not from a blockage, so....cause unknown. I wonder if whatever is going on in my gut could actually cause an infarction.

A few years ago, I was having palpitations which I still do, and after several tests for my heart, the doctor told me it was gas. He explained the stomach is close to the heart, and with the gas it swells the stomach and cause it to bounce on the heart and triggers the palpitations. I have gotten use to that happening, so after the gas comes out, the palpitations stop.

I have an irregular heart beat problem associated with muscle spasms in other parts of my body. I'll start having some leg twitching, and then start having irregular beats, the twitching can be anywhere. The doctors are clueless, I am on no medications, I have had this for 40 years, and it is growing worse as I grow older. They didn't find any signs of MS, blood pressure normal, no diabetes, otherwise healthy, and this problem does go into remission, once for many months, but now remissions are less and less. I take many supplements but not excessive. I am on keto now and have lost 60 pounds to near my high school weight, but I still have the problem.

I have no health conditions and dont take meds, but if I eat wheat, specifically American garbage wheat, via bread, pizza, pasta, etc., i will get heart palpitations, guaranteed. I tested positive for a wheat sensitivity, not allergy, and im certain many people have sensitivities and are unaware. What’s worse, the garbage American medical industry, will not perform iGE tests. They only perform iGG, which will only detect a full blown allergy to specific foods. If i get palpitations, i lay on my left side with my upper body propped out and rub and pat my stomach for a good 5-10 minutes to encourage burping, thus relieving the pressure and my heart rate begins to normalize.

I’ve had heart palpitations on and off all my life. I’ve always been treated like a hypochondriac when it comes to this. Tests never revealed anything. At 75 I’ve finally been told I have tachycardia. After listening to this and looking up more information I see the connection with the vagus nerve. This has never been mentioned to me. Since my palpitations have become so powerful over the last few years I’ve had to live with the anxiety. There’s been a couple of times I’ve called an ambulance. I live alone. I’ve begun some techniques I found online that seem to be sound and helpful. I can’t believe that no doctor has taken the time or had the expertise to handle this. Thank you so much.

I have suffered with similar issues. My nervous system has been out of sync for my entire life. I'm 57. This created many episodes of heart palpitations since the age of 9. I also acquired high blood pressure at an early age of about 19. I was very athletic but my heart always beat hard. Anyway I found out in my 40's that APPLE CIDER VINEGAR helps regulate and calm my nervous system. Taking it helps with both my heart palpitations and blood pressure. Apple cider vinegar taken with water to protect your teeth enamel is worth a try. I would take as much as 2-4 oz with 10 oz water. It calms my system down within an 30 mins - 1 hour. Rinse your mouth out after taking this dose. It may take getting used to. Hope this helps

Same here. What I did/do is alter the diet to keep acidity down. This requires work on your part. No animal fats or products, no sugars, no bad carbs. It's very basic and easy - consume mostly, if not only, fruits, melons, berries and easy to digest veggies. I eat salads for my veggies. If you're prone to acidosis, reflux, etc, may be best to avoid tomatoes. If not, eat away. For gastritis, which I've had - glass of water with ginger powder, neem powder and ajwain powder with stevia to sweeten. It tastes bad, but kills helicobacter pylori quite well and settles the stomach. Drink three times per day minimally. I also use a concoction of Green Black Walnut Hull/Wormwood (NOW Brand) 10 drops, oil of oregano 5-10 drops, liquid immune support drops 10 drops, Drops of Nature Quercetin, Zinc & Bromelain 5-10 drops and Dragon's Blood 5 drops in a glass of water 2 to 3 times daily. Use Pepto Bismol (Bismuth) to keep acid down. I juice in my juicer - cabbage (best gut/ulcer healer in the world), carrot, one clove garlic and 1 to 2 apples for taste 1 to 3 times daily. Do some or all of the protocol and you will heal. Be you may experience diarrhea from the die-off so be close to a bathroom if able. This is normal. Best of luck and happy healing.

It's great that Dr Gupta is one of the few cardiologists who takes this link seriously. His RU-vid channel has been a great resource and comfort for years, providing the lay person suffering from Heart disease (in all its complex forms) with honest, clearly explained facts and reassurance, even "in extremis". The fact that the Heart is such an incredible, complex organ, with its own internal nervous system, is exactly why it's vital that Hiatus Hernia "syndrome" doesn't mask actual disease of the Heart itself. After all, in our society, it is a much abused organ! If people are "explaining away" their symptoms as Hiatus Hernia too readily, that would be unwise, even if it means another alarming trip to Casualty & more negative test results in hospital. Better safe than sorry when it comes to the Heart.

I've found that one of the major problems associated with Gerd and/or acid reflux of the stomach has more to do with not having enough acid in the stomach vs. too much. Many of these individuals who are having these symptoms with gastro related problems, are suffering from a lack of pepsin and/or HCL in their stomach, which in turn causes the Gerd or acid reflux to occur and proliferate symptoms. First, If one were to begin to pay attention to the types of food being consumed, by eliminating foods like tomatoes, peppers, heavy carbohydrates like pizza dough and sugary foods and drinks, many of the stomach issues begin to improve. However, many individuals also require additional help in the form of an added pepsin, an amino acid and HCL (hydrochloric acid). Many doctors and gastroenterologists would not agree with this suggestion. As the mainstream medical position is to immediately prescribe PPI's to treat the symptoms of gastric discomfort such as acid reflux and Gerd. With the mindset, that the stomach is producing too much acid therefore curbing the acid production is needed. This approach is in many cases and in my opinion the wrong diagnosis and a subsequent wrong prognosis. As the underlying problem is NOT an over abundance of stomach acid, but a lack of sufficient stomach acids.

Such palpitations can be caused by trauma to the vagus nerve, which affects every organ in the body including the stomach and the heart. Another related issue may be trauma to the L5/S1 vertebrae, which in turn can lead to the vagus nerve malfunctioning.
