this stone sidewalk , "garden walkway" was a makeover of what the previous landscaper had laid, All the owner wanted was not to track in mud or dirt inside his house, so the cheapest solution was to take the existing stone lay them on some gravel and cement the joints. I would never have done this if I was to put in a new sidewalk, all my videos are my ways and ideas, I always suggest anyone doing work to consult professional help www.amazon.com...

Hello Mike, Thank you for your great videos. I truly enjoy watching them. I have been a landscape contractor in California for thirty years or so now. When I first started, I was fortunate to meet and learn from a mason named Ed Ziniker. Ed was a 3rd generation mason who was getting ready to retire, and he knew his stuff Ed loved to teach his kraft to those who were interested and was full of passion about what he did. Back in those days it was very rare to find anyone who would take the time to show you some of their tricks of the trade. Sad to say, that is still kind of that way today. You remind me of Ed and the passion he had about teaching the kraft. Without guys like you showing the "new school" and "old school" ways of doing things, a lot of that knowledge will be lost. Today everything about new school and as you demonstrate, it is not necessarily wrong, but it also may not be the best way to do something. I know this was a long comment, but I had to say thank you and tell you that what you are sharing is truly appreciated.

Hi Mike. I live in the mountains of North Carolina (4M ft elevation) so the climate is very similar to Northern Pennsylvania. Been using your videos for over one year. Your adjustments because of our cold, wet climate have always been applicable. I'm finishing a flagstone walkway over concrete. There is a small porch at our front door. Originally, this porch was covered with solid brick flat down. I had a business ten years ago. There was a guy who did our maintenance work. He also claimed to be a qualified mason and showed me several jobs in the area that he claimed he had done. He put in a walkway with beautiful flagstone, but improperly laid down. I dug up his work, moved the Rock and re-installed them following your guidance on You Tube. Somehow, I agreed to his laying clay tiles on the porch. This was a disaster, which I'm now ready to correct. Plan to lay flagstone, using 1-Portland, 2-sand. Do I need any special additives or coatings? Does my plan appear sound?

@@MikeHaduck Mike, Thank you very much for your prompt response. I'm a former teacher so I tend to go on-and-on. What I really wanted to ask was, "Do I need more than 1-portland, 2-sand to stick flagstone to a brick surface? Thank you very much.

Would that also be okay? Would it be stronger or isn’t necessary? Also if I did decide to add concrete to the bottom of the flagstone is it best to set it in like that let it dry then fill in the gaps or do it all at once as you are placing them in 1 by 1. Hi Mike, Great videos! Your good natured way of speaking is a pleasure to watch. I have a question. In another video you placed wire mesh under the walkway that floated on gravel and in this one you didn't. I understand the owner may not have wanted to pay extra for the mesh but if I was going to make a walkway in my garden and did not want to pour a full concrete slab on top of the gravel base would you recommend the mesh or no? Is there a big difference in durability or movement with mesh vs. no mesh assuming they are both placed on 4-6 inches of compacted gravel? Thanks for all your videos. -Glenn

So we argued about having 2 differents grades when laying interlock doesn't work , this was my thinking even if we popped up the old pavers that has to come to asphalt level we still have the other pavers sitting on an old grade , the level said there is 3/8 gab , What is your point of view to do this kind of repairing .

Mike...we all are very aware you live in Pennsylvania. There is really no reason to tell everyone this fact several times on each video. I grew up very near Philadelphia. So I'm very familiar where you live in PA. But please, for the Love of The Almighty, please stop telling all of us how the weather is where you live in PA. I would feel much better. On a lighter note, I really do love your site. It's very informative. You do an awesome job..really you do. Thanks for allowing me to get this off my chest......

@@MikeHaduckI like hearing that you are in PA. Folks need to know where you are at…. Some people fast forward videos too. I am in North Idaho… similar weather. I would not watch a southerner do stone work. Does not apply to me. 😊

Hi Paul, in this case I don’t want it staining the stones, ,I would have done it like my flagstone sidewalk but the owner just wanted to re use these, thanks, mike

@@MikeHaduck I see your point. So it was not a matter of less water being stronger.

So someone pays you to do a job, and you're saying that you don't care if it cracks because it is only for a garden? I'll bet the homeowner cares. If I ever hire someone to do any job, I would want it done the proper way. And not for it to start breaking or cracking in a couple years.

I should have watched the whole video before commenting. Then I see why you did what you did. But I think pavers would have been better for that job.

The reason why I disliked your video because you didn’t shout, swore, scream and yell at others.
