I got a couple of the Stonfo disc drag bobbins a couple years ago. I found that I was avoiding using them, I guess just because I don't like disassembling the thing when I want to change thread color/size.. Having to put parts down on the bench while I change thread spools annoys me, plus there's a good chance that I'll lose the disc under the many piles of trying materials that never got put away from the last three tying sessions. These new models are clearly easier to perform the thread change and I'm guessing I'd like that extra weight in my hand. The price is an eye popper. Rather than purchasing one myself, I'm going to wait until my B-day or X-mas and let the wife get it for me - much less painful that way.

I cannot imagine taking that much time to put the bobbin on the bobbin holder. There is no need IMHO to continue to make these more complicated. I can't stand the time it takes with an uncomplicated Terra bobbin holder. That's why I own ~20 of them and just leave them together. And, $64??? That's insane...

If you tie a lot of big flies where you’re really cranking down on the pressure those better bobbins are like night n day over the cheap ones. I like my flies as tight as I can get them , especially the pike n musky flies . I’ve broken stems on those cheaper ones spinning deer hair. The Rite bobbins are good for the money imo. These look like they would fit a niche with a lot of tiers. Have to try the long stemmed one someday. I like the idea of the weight when putting material on big flies !!

@@fudd126 I hear you, I’ve probably got 20 of those cheaper ones use mine with wires n lead. If you’re not using GSP threads or spinning a lot of deer hair on big flies wouldn’t make a lot of difference. Most of my cheaper bobbins are 30-35 yr old + ! I have broken a few stems that’s when I started buying the Rite bobbins. They’re in $30 range and hard to beat if you can find them. Hard for shops to keep them in stock .

Too much hassle, stonfo are trying to copy the Tiemco and Smhaen here and they have failed miserably, too heavy and no ceramic tube and the two nuts are so annoying. Its a similar price to the better ones from Tiemco and Smhaen. You could buy three Tiemco standard ceramic bobbin holders for that price and they are probably the best you can tie with.
