For Charlie, first of all you gotta pause it especially if you're tryna do a mock meet. What really helped me get my leg drive down was to have my feet flat and wide, and to cue not putting any weight on my ass. Basically your ass has to be touching the bench, but almost floating on the bench I guess. That really helped me lock in my bench and keep the progress going.

💯 The floating butt concept definitely helped my leg drive a lot, as well.

What about program check tuesday? I think it would be really neat to hear your feedback on viewers programs regarding PL. Like what would be worth to tweak if ones selfmade program isnt producing the desired adaptation. Just a thought

I remember sending this guy a video of my bench when I was just starting out, did like 60kg and waited for ages for him to react to it. My video finally got reacted to and he was like "wtf is this, I waited this long for this..." This guy does give good critique and advice but I felt kinda shitty that day 🤣put some respec on beginner lifters trying to improve and do their bit ❤️

Great tip on back tightness in the squat. I’ve been noticing that I’m losing that in the transition into and out of the hole.

I had the same problem. It's much improved since I started using a wider grip. Bryce is exactly right in his explanation. Now I'm forced to think about upper back tightness and brace my lats as opposed to assuming it's good because I feel tight as a result of a closer grip. It's also much easier on my shoulders, which is a nice bonus.

What do you guys think of Charlie's Bench?

Need to start training proper paused style competition bench. Add in paused spotto and longer paused assistance movements. Need to get tighter and stronger at the bottom.

Hey Bryce! Think Charlie needs to work on finding better feet. His butt is coming off of the bench, so perhaps bringing his feet closer to the rest of his body might help. As far as progressing, perhaps training with more control and some accessories would be beneficial. Lastly, in the words of Rippetoe, Eat!!

#1 is improving shoulder depression with better lat engagement, to prevent injury. Slightly wider grip may help, elbows are going

I find the bounce bench press really helps overload the movement. When I wanna focus on pause benching I do alot of spoto presses and it gets rid of any sort of weakness of the chest that the bounce would make. Works great for me
@nicolarossi8728

Bouncing the barbell has literally no point, it increases your potential of injuries and worsen your capability of activating chest fibers.

If you're not bruising at the bottom of ur chest then why not. Some people mistake bouncing for immediately lifting right after bottom center.

Charlie does a touch and go bench and doesn't use much leg drive till he touches the chest with the bar. I even suspect that he raises his hips off the bench during the concentric

Could you explain what you mean by a wider grip is less stress on the shoulders? I always felt the opposite. Does this apply to benching with little to no arch and without a shirt? Thank you
@calgarybarbell
@calgarybarbell 2 года назад
A wider grip is less range of motion. For *some people* that’s less stressful than a closer grip which is more range of motion. And yes, we’re talking about raw benching here.

First off all he should try to widen his grip. Second he needs to "tuck the should blades" together and down, maybe would beneifit from a little better setup from the go, some more arch and his feet a bit more away from him for a while to help him press back instead of up, so he doesnt lift his butt. And dont bounce, try a lighter touch and maybe not so far down. Just a tad more towards the face.
@XXLRebel
@XXLRebel 2 года назад
No he shouldn't. Grip width is already pretty wide and if he wants to press from there then it's his personal preference. Where do you see him not putting his shoulders into the bench? Also you're telling him to arch more but keep his feet more away from him. Which is it because moving your feet away you generally move your butt away from your shoulders which is the main factor of a big arch. Sounds like you think you know what you're talking about but you actually don't😅
