Many thanks, great job explaining why one of my guitars constantly broke the high E string. The "machine head" had two bure and tooling spots on the E tuner it is the string through style. I used a nine-power magnifier to identify the problem, a jewelry file (my Dad taught me to repair watchs and do jewelry work as a little kid) I used his 1950s tools to make the repair. Note to all not a job for everyone proper tool is essential and I'm not sure where one secures a file the size of the fat E string. Superfine emery cloth or superfine sandpaper might work with lots of care and folding small pieces into a point. The final finish was 000 and 0000 steel wool.

usually strings break where the string touches the fret wire, it took around a month for the rust and the friction to break a string on my brand new electric guitar... it broke because I was bending the strings way too much

Thank you I am almost in tears of frustration, 3 guitars I have tuned have broke up to 2 strings per guitar and not just the high E. The last one just now was at the tuners both strings. boo hoo . Will do as you say ..thanks again

i cant even do a full step bend on fret 12 high e string it will break if i do that

I keep breaking my high E string at the tuner. I’m using rocksmith and a clip on tuner to try and get the E to tune but it always breaks before it’s in. I’m going to try lightly filing the machine head tomorrow - fingers crossed I’ve broken about 5 strings now....

why everytime i downtune from standard e to drop b my high e string break

My newbie mistake was not leaving enough slack in the string before winding causing it to rip apart while winding

Always bored and bending around my acoustic e string and I've broken about 5 haven't broken any other strings besides it

Another cause and perhaps most common is error in tuning too tight

When I try to bend my gauge 9 e string a full step it usually breaks

ny machine head is kinda unstable
