STOP Doing Face Pulls Like This! (I'M BEGGING YOU)

The face pull is an incredible exercise for not only building the rear delts and upper back muscles, but there is one way that people screw up the face pull. Luckily, there is a simple fix that will make sure you get the exercise done correctly every single time you do it.
First, it is important to understand the benefits of the exercise - not only is it going to help build muscle at the right loads, but it acts as an incredible corrective exercise to keep your shoulders healthy and working forever.
Face pulls are primarily an exercise that reinforces external rotation of the shoulder joint. Training this function is important as we often spend our time with internally rotated shoulders. Internal rotation can lead to dysfunction, discomfort, and potentially injury as well. Unless we train the external rotator muscles in the shoulder, undoing that bad posture of internally rotated shoulders becomes that much more difficult.
Believe me, for the best performance and healthy shoulders, you are going to want to train the rotator cuff muscles.
This is where facepulls come into play; directly training the rotator cuff, the rear delts, and the upper back. These overlooked areas need a little extra attention to make sure nothing goes awry with your shoulders.
When doing face pulls the traditional way with a single rope attachment, you are not getting enough range of motion to adequately train these muscles. If you take a look at the finishing position of the exercise, you will notice that your forearms are not at 90 degree position in relation to your upper arm. In fact, you will see that there is a pretty acute angle that has the hands directly over the biceps.
The fix is easy though.
You need to make sure you are using the right equipment. Instead of using the standard single rope, providing a smaller range of motion and limited external rotation of the shoulder joint, you will want to use either an extra long rope or, if you have enough of these lying around, two standard ropes. This will give you the extra length needed to properly externally rotate the shoulders. In the finishing position, you will notice that your forearms are now at that desired 90 degree angle.
Remember, external rotation is the name of the game when using face pulls as a corrective exercise or even as a primer before heading into your pushing compound exercises such as the bench press or the overhead press. The best way to achieve external rotation is to get those hands out wide enough which is only achievable through the recommendations I made in terms of the rope attachment(s).

Bells of Steel sells a 54" tricep rope. I'm 6'2" and it works great. (35 bucks) Absolutely worth it.

I’ve been doing facepulls at least 2x a week since I found this page 7+ years ago. This one exercise has helped me create a significantly advanced infraspinatus and Teres minor and has saved me from a few injuries. Thank you, Jeff.

Awesome. Congrats 😃👍🏻 After lots of time trying to find Jeff's blue rope i did find a 54" tricep rope at Bells of Steel. Not only are my face pulls spot on but i have seriously increased my ROM and general tricep strength. I highly recommend it. (35 bucks) 💪🏼😃👍🏻

@@alaron5698 easy. Keeping all muscles strong and flexible it key to injury prevention. ESPECIALLY the smaller lesser used muscles. Imbalances cause LOTS of injuries. So by this man has prevented injuries by preventing Imbalances and weaknesses in his muscles. Especially while working his day to day job.

I find doing face pulls with a resistance band effective for the wider range. I really like the door frame face pull version, too. Thanks Jeff

It helps to get the technique right, but the resistance curve is the opposite of ideal. Usually you want the hard part of the motion to be the start and end position of your full motion (where the muscles are lengthened). That is ideal for bodybuilding. For strength you want it to be equally hard in every position. So in both cases, you best go for the cable. 1 more tip is if you have the equipment available, is to change the cable position to be the height of your waist - belly button.

First thing I do entering the gym, is get two ropes for this exercise. It's something I always do now, thanks to Jeff. The gains definitely began, thanks to the great Jeff! Cheers

I also sometimes loop my lifting straps around the two handles to make the rope longer. A little harder to grip it, but it works in a pinch when there's only one rope around in the gym

I do them with one rope. It's a 55" rope I got specifically for face pulls and tricep pushdowns

Ye they're well good, I do them with a resistance band (not technically a band it's not a loop it has 2 ends)pulling against a door handle on my knees, to get the hands nice and wide like he's saying. Try them, your upper back will feel great and shoulders pulled back

Depends on the gym! I've seen one gym that learned from that long ago and they had a rope twice the length of those normal ones and it was beautiful

If you don't have two ropes then make your own custom one out of a $2 piece of rope to golf balls and if you really want to splurge you can get a $2 clip. Nothing should stop you from doing face pulls!

There are ropes that are longer, they are specifically for that. If necessary, if there isn't one in the gym, you can also buy one.

Looks like those people are intentionally just targeting their rear delts. So yes, if you are doing that movement and trying to just do a FP then fix it.

I use a band that has handles. I just wrap it around something stable and stationary at my face height. Super easy!

Doing a face pull like this is mostly training the external rotator cuff isn’t it? Like your rear delt gets a bit but the lift is definitely limited by the rotator cuff

Problem is there's always a group hogging the cables usually. Or the single person who base their full body workout on random cable exercises when literally they could do everything on the other multiple machines/ free weights available. Add to the mix they do one set then spend 5 minutes on their phone ! The only thing i need it for is cable chest flies and face pulls and many a time i have to wait for an hr for just a few mins😂

I just loop my resistance band from home. The elasticity will help you reach that end range of motion you need.

Hey Jeff, how would you correct uneven bench press? I found that recently when I perform barbell or dumbbell pressing of any angle, the left side tilts to the side a good amount more than the right, no matter what weight I use. With dumbbells I can get a much deeper stretch on my left side than on my right. I think it is to do with uneven shoulder blades. How would you correct this issue? Thanks
