Years ago, I had no confidence in a Jig. Then I realized that it was because I rarely used one. I made myself throw one often and taught myself how to become effective with it. Now, I would never fish without one tied on. It is the Bait that catches my biggest fish PERIOD..!
@@toddlester8063 that’s what I did when I started throwing a jig just anywhere I’d throw a Texas rig I started throwing a jig. I would consider throwing a black blue they will always hit that no matter time of year or day they just hit a black and blue. I started out throwing a 3/8 but now all I throw is a 1/2 unless I’m fishing 25+ then I’ll go to a 3/4 or a 1 ounce
I used to outfish my friend all the time on his home lakes/ponds because he never liked to throw a jig and I live and die by my green pumpkin orange jigs with a rage craw
Let me be the first to point out your dock skipping mistake. First, never skip in under the dock. Always land your lure on the dock. Drag it off where the line get hopelessly tangled leaving your lure right at water level.Biggest bass in the state grabs it, turns, slaps his tail at you & is gone along with your 7 buck jig. Thats how its done ! Go home & lie to your buddies. Thanks for the show Best on RU-vid Pauley
ive forced myself to fish a jig this year and its paid off. have a few good videos jig fishin on my channel if anyone wants to check em out. thanks for all the tips and knowledge you drop on here dude !
I just barely started fishing recently and subscribed to your channel as I have found it to be one of the most informative channels on RU-vid. Today I went and tied on a Jig, followed your advice and landed my PB!! Granted it was still small but it sure beat all those tiny little ones I have been reeling in on a Texas Rig. Thanks for all the great videos and keep up the fantastic work!!
If you don't feel confidence in a jig because you haven't much experience in one yet..do like i did and take nothing but jigs with you and fish them all day. Now I make my own, pour and paint and skirts as well. I love jigs now.
I watched this video again today. Right now I'm having more fun with a 6'6 med heavy w/15 floro and it's a blast! My main jig rod is 7'3 med heavy but feels tiresome and clunky after fishing the short rod. The 7'3 is way better and 4x more expensive with 20lb. floro. I think less is better on this deal. But I don't need to cash checks!
A blue and black Strike King Mini-Bite with a black and blue swim tail is by far my most effective lure and my go to for any type of water. Its $2.99 at Academy. I caught a 7.3 pounder last weekend.
Great tips Nathan. I've only caught one bass on a regular jig... and that one was a snag off a bedding fish. 😮 I'm going to put more work in with jigs this summer.
Tyler, do i HAVE to trim my jig skirt and hook guard? I see many guys say you must trim to catch more bass. I want to start fishing the jigs i bought bit have little confidence in them as i fish weightless texas rigs 90% of the time as we have a LOT of grass in our dams.
Very good information! I'm a newbie so I'm also a bit one dimensional. I caught my first offshore bass on a hump using a green pumpkin 1/2 oz football jig. It was so incredibly different that it became my favorite way to fish everywhere! Wrong choice but that's what happened. I did catch a few more bass over time but eventually I got burned out and almost gave up. Lol Trying a few new things now. Thanks for sharing!
Hey man, I got my order today from the place you had in your description, tell me, on their swimjigs do they use living rubber in their skirts, loving the wisdom and knowledge in your vids, glad I'm a subscriber.
Another thing is you can use different types of trailers to adjust the fall rate also, I use a 1/2oz jig and just change the trailers to make a faster or slower fall rate.
It would be nice if you added a link or gave us some information on where to get our key jigs. I am new to jig fishing and have no idea what an Arty jig looks like I don't even know how to spell it. Excellent video I learned more about jig fishing from your video than any video I have seen
Great information, Ty. I haven't heard those points explained better since I have been watching fishing videos. I can use that information. Thanks! I do have a question. I am fairly new at bass fishing, and because I don't have a boat, I do a lot of bank fishing. My problem with the Jig is that if I think I'm fishing in grass and using the appropriate jig, a log shows up. Do you have any helpful hints for this situation?
When I started Bass fishing, there were no specific designs for swimming, grass or rock or wood.... There were Casting and Flippin Jigs and I caught plenty of fish. Don't make it more complicated than it needs to be. Pick out a Jig with a good quality hook and skirt. Use the best line you can afford and fish it as often as possible. Remember.... when you even think a fish has it, set the hook. Swings are free. None of us realize how fast a Bass can suck in a Jig only to spit it out a nano second later. If your standing there wondering if that was a fish... It's already too late. Yes, there are those fish that will pick it up and swim with it... Nobody misses them but more are missed than we'll ever know.
@@Duschbag good point about setting up if you even suspect a fish grabbed it on the fall. I always watch the line for that twitch when I am hopping it. Soon as you see the line jump reel down on the slack and set up. Only time I ever got back to back 5 lbers was hopping a black/blue jig through a grass flat. Great video Tyler.
I have no confidence in a jig. Every time I tie one on it comes off after three or four cast. A lot of that is cause I’m on a kayak. And every move is calculated. Just gotta commit.
Keep throwing bait out there bud. You'll start catching them. For me, this year, I've been throwing senko (weightless, Texas rigged). I catch one at least most of the time
@@CantrellMosley1 A little advice. Change up your colors and sometimes style of fishing 🎣 unless you go to the same pond all the time. However, I think color matters most imo.
Okuma okuma okuma. you’re getting gear but must suck at times having to use everything okuma. I’m sure off camera you’re using Daiwa and shimano daily.
I fish a lot of shallow sloppy water. I use whatever cheap arkie style heads. Currently using the terminator jigs they sell at my local Dick's. Pair a 1/4 oz jig with a 4.3 keitech or a Reaction innovations skinny dipper to save some $, and you can swim it slowly in a couple feet of water without getting into the dreaded string algae that covers the bottom of most places I fish. I like blugill and perch immitaters so a green pumpkin jig with emerald shiner from keitech looks pretty good or the sungill coloured skinny dipper from Reaction Innovations looks great. Most importantly the light jig and bulky trailer give the bait enough lift that you can retrieve it fairly slow, and not have to burn it back in to keep the slop off of it.
I use a jig setup from the bank all the time. On weedy or moss covered shorelines I will just drop it in any open hole in the mat or weeds. I just have a 7ft pole and basically drop the bait through a hole then grab the line after the reel, pull up the jig and drop it in the next hole. I can't tell you how many times i walk up to a lake and people are throwing over the weeds and I just take that jig and drop it down those holes and catch fish. You always have to plan on losing a jig here and there on the bank. Just part of the deal.
I started bass fishing when I turned 15. And at 59, I can honestly tell you I have absolutely no confidence is a blue n black jig. I've fished the in various weight and trailers, but give me ANY other color, I bank on them. Even on a pink skirted jig, with a white, chartreuse or orange trailer! I found that green pumpkin with Purple or a PnJ are the 2 jig colors I've mainly catch my bass. Now I have had luck on true blue and purple combination. In the spring, green pumpkin with orange on the skirt or trailer seems to be a winner for me. Last year, my mind was blown. I couldn't catch a bass on a jig. NONE, zip, nada, zero! Temp was in the mid 40s to upper 50s and the only thing I could catch bass on, was the Fire craw color chatterbait! Like you said, some times bass are hard to figure out. Having a variety of baits can help you hit pay diet, so do speak.
I am a big jig person. I was frustrated when I first started using a jig many years ago. Now all these years later(maybe 20+years) I love a jig and always have one tied on. I really keep it simple which is probably holding me back a bit but I have caught a ton of nice fish on that one simple setup. Blk/blu is my go to jig and seems to catch fish everywhere. Recently though I have been trying some different things as far as trailer.
Wow. No kickers!!!! We had the opposite problem Friday night 8.59 kicker and two 2 pounders. Could not fill the limit. If you don’t have a strong spiritual backbone, this sport is more humbling than golf!!!!! Still……great memories no one can take from you. Thanks for sharing Greg. That was great.
Yo Ty, thank you so much for your skipping vid. I just went out in the back yard and followed your advice. made tree try's. First cast a fail. cast two, nice skip. Cast tree, real nice long skip and a three lber. Thanks again . Love the on the water lessons.
I make myself 5 different style jigs and have weighed more tournament fish over the last 30 year on a jig than any other bait. I seldom fish less than 3/8, 3/4 - 1oz will catch more big fish. Black, Brown and White are the best colors.
If you’re not fishing a jig you’re missing that PB I look at it the same way I fish 5-7” glide baits I’m not looking for a 35 fish day I’m looking for 2-4 big bites let’s be honest bass are fairly dumb you can catch em one right after another on a ned rig don’t be afraid to throw those big bulky jigs yes the 1# bass will eat em too just like a 1# bass will eat a 6” glide bait
Extremely informative channel. Never been one to throw a jig, but with the pressured waters I fish here in Florida, think I’ll give it a go. Oh, and subbed.
I noticed this year in Western New York the weeds the weeds have really changed. Almost any lure that I could go through weeds It's coming back with salad., Any suggestions on that.
Have you done a video on what your jigs look like and how to mount them along with trailers? What some of your favorites are? This would be helpful for us really new fishermen. Seeing all these great fish being hauled in is nice but I keep trying to see the jig itself. I would appreciate it and pretty sure others would like that too. Thanks in advance. Great tips too.
Dang where was this video at the the beginning of the season. As it's my first ever tossing out a jig. Plus need a new challenge. But the one thing I got confused on is? Why are pike going after my jigs all the time. The only bass I got was. When I went through veg and got my first large mouth bass. But ya need those bikes to stay away. Thanks for the awesome explanation.
Early in the summer when the lilly weren't as thick I would toss a texas rig until the pad got so thick it was annoying to fish them. I started fishing a jig on a ledge out in the middle of the lake and pulling a 6lber out of nowhere in the middle of a lake was the most satisfying feeling ever.
Thank you so much, this is my first time on your page. I would like to learn more on jig fishing and what to use. Can you show me the difference on the weight and jig and what time of season to finish for bass . Dont have a boat. I know it will be some what hard to get a good feel on bass fishing from the bank.
I would like to ask you for advice I love to fish a jig but most times I swim a jig because some of the lakes and ponds that I fish have a lot of old grass and muck on the bottom do I keep swimming the jig or should I drag it on the bottom
The pond I grew up on had a pretty mucky bottom but it also had edges of grass. First off I would use anything heavier than 3/8oz for a jig cause you don’t want it to get bogged down in the muck. I used to cast to the edge of the weed lines and hop a jig high off the bottom and caught a ton of bass doing that. Dragging it is typically not great because of the muck
I use rattles on my jigs just because I fish a lot stained to dirty water. It seems to help the fish locate the jig. Whether it is needed or not may be a matter of opinion but I always have a rattle on mine and always seem to catch fish with it on.
I like your videos a lot, but please get rid of your intro music, background music, and intro in general. You are smart, I would subscribe. Please don't take offense, I'm still giving you a like, but I'd like to hear you talk without the club music in the background. We're here to talk about fishing, right?
Trying to maintain bottom contact with a jig that light is a pain in the ass. Sometimes catching fish means losing a few baits- just the way it works. Jigs are cheap and plentiful because they get lost often- they're made to fish in the cover and on rocky bottoms- two great places to get snagged. I just use the best head design I can for whatever I'm fishing, get my fall rate and trailer action tuned in - and then whatever I lose, I lose. If you start adjusting trying not to lose baits you'll adjust yourself right out of a bite.
Jig mistakes? There are no set rules or laws that you must follow in Bass fishing. Also, jigs catch big fish? Where's the scientific evidence to this claim? The only reason you caught that "Big" fish on the jig was because it just so happened to be the lure tied on to the end of your line at the time.
