Until recently I dismissed the whole "your phone is spying on you" as paranoia. The other day I asked my neighbor about where she buys her firewood and she sent me a screen shot of the mom and pop suppliers contact information. Within a couple of hours I was getting targeted ads for woodstoves from Amazon... Thanks for the info Liron

It's so bad and going to get worse as the technology improves. You really can't trust any number calling ur cell as spoofing can make you think Uncle Steve is calling, but it really is scammers. Same with c.card companies and banks... spoofing is draining accounts worldwide. You can literally be spoofed on any number now. It's frightening. I feel really bad for elderly falling for these scams.

No, these numbers are not very useful. Companies use shared information 'to give you a better consumer experience'. So you are targeted because of your behaviour using Google, Facebook, Alexis, Google Net and so on. Analytics will be used to think what you might need in the future. Often this works, but sometimes it doesn't. We all agree to this by giving business permissions. It's part of the job of the IT department, working together with specialized business employees.

I didnt even get the option to keep my number private, because the person who had it before me seems to have sold their number out to everyone on the planet. What I do is make my default ringtone complete silence, so I never even hear these calls. Anyone who has legitimate business with me will leave a voice mail that will have identifiable information. Any call that doesnt leave a voicemail, or is not already on my contact list, is dismissed on the spot. This has worked very well for me.

@@tubular618 This is the way to go! My voicemail message tells the caller that my phone won't ring if they're not in my contact list, but I'll call right back if they leave a message asking me to. Unfortunately, this procedure won't stop some robocalls. Most robocallers now don't use a database of specific numbers, but just dial every possible number in a block or area code. This way, they don't overlook any that are private or not in a database. So even if your phone number was NEVER used, it will be called by spammers.
@Scooter30FTW

I have trouble believing multibillion dollar tech companies can't prevent spam. No they leave it to the end user to protect themselves, while they gladly leave us as victims of preventable incursions. It creates another whole industry the end user has to pay for, virus protection costing hundreds of millions. If Norton can stop it why can't A _& _, T _ _ _ _ _ _ _, C_ _ _ _ _ t, and the rest?

your brand new number you got was probably used before. by someone that died, lost the phone/sim and just got a new number and/or number was just unused for a prolonged period of time. theres a finite number of phone numbers unless you increase a amount of numbers, so they are reused. i have seen al least two from my phonebook reused that was attached to deceased person.

Think of changing your number like this - everybody keeps your number stored on their phones and just push a button to call you - they don’t have to memorize it. This is why I never hand my mobile numbers to business; not even Amazon which has my landline number.

Why not just use a free google voice number instead of paying to port your existing cell number or buying a Mint#?

I got a new 'phone, contract and number. I did not give the new number to anyone. Within days I had 5 "your package is waiting" text messages. I had not used the 'phone at all.

Here another most dont think about how they get your nuber. I gave my number, in person, to a Doctors office for a simple DOT. It was a newish number 3months or so. And for two weeks, a day after the dr visit, at both numbers i provided I was getting blownup.

Why did you give the doctor office 2 numbers? They’re the worst offenders at protecting your information as you sadly found out. Sorry you went through that!

I don't trust free services. They need to make money somehow. Usually it's by selling your data. So thanks, but no thanks. Kinda defeats the purpose

I’ve had my Google Voice number since 2008 and it was refused once. I think they just want a number they can ultimately sell and bug the heck out of us.

Wouldn’t the affiliates of your supplier strictly speaking be fourth parties? You are 1, your supplier 2, their affiliates 3, and their cohorts logically 4.

I just use my Google number as a "give away" number to places who don't need my personal number. I can send it to voicemail and not even bother with it. But I can answer calls if I want to.

There are email accounts I can no longer access because they are tied to an old phone number which I no longer have access to. For that reason alone I feel very strongly that tying your authentication to a number that could change over time is a bad move.
@LironSegev

why would your number change? Your main cell number doesn't change unless you stop paying your account and get a new number.

Just check as an unlocked phone.doesnt mean the same as paying for the phone through your provider. I have a phone from my provider that I pay monthly for but I can use any SIM card from anyone else.

I use Google number and it's free, I work from home and when I step out of my desk I carry a pre-paid cell number that I don't give to anyone. When someone calls my Google number it rings on my cell.

There is no such thing as a "brand new number" all numbers are recycled. Unless there is a new area code that was just created the number you getis recycled.
