excellent, much-needed tutorial. this is something every player needs in his toolbox. exemplars that immediately come to mind would be zheng siwei and yuta watanabe i'm gonna warn about one thing. i have seen a lot of ACL blowouts happen right in front of me. i've seen athletes come back from it, but i've seen as many aborted or at least severely impacted careers. it's motivated me to spend some time reading the research literature to try to understand that mechanics of how these injuries occur. in my observation, the jump out smash as you are calling it is one of the common triggers for the injury. note in this move the shuttle-side leg is the last to leave the floor and the first to land. you are essentially jumping from one leg onto that same leg. what seems to happen in ACL injuries with this move is the athlete is rotating the body, which is kinda instinctive when you're preparing to smash, and as you rotate, the shuttle-side knee, the one you are jumping off of, experiences some torque. under torque the joint inside the knee acts as a fulcrum and can separate the knee and stretch the ACL. when you jump at the same time the ACL is being stretched from torque, the ACL can tear partially or fully. when there's a full tear and the athlete lands in this situation they always collapse and hold their knee. people often think they landed wrong, in my understanding that is not correct. the damage happened on the way up, and was fully felt in landing the lesson isnt that you shouldnt do this type of move. like the title says, you should stop hitting backhands, especially in any kind of doubles, and do this move instead when you cant get behind the shuttle. but do it right. note the way greg and jen do it, with the hips flat to the net instead of rotating like you would normally do in a smash. so your hips stay pretty much parallel to the net the whole time. in the situation where you need to reply to a high cross-court and dont have time to get behind the shuttle, consider avoiding hip rotation and be conscious of the shuttle side leg pushing off the floor with zero torque on the knee ACL injuries affect both genders but are significantly more prevalent among females, probably because female joints tend to be generally looser than male joints injuries are an inherent risk in any explosive sport, and you accept the risk. the point is to arm yourself with information and discipline yourself to what keeps you free of serious injuries. greg and jen, ACL and other catastrophic court injuries are an under-covered topic. if it was right for you to cover the topic i'm sure it would be welcomed by professional and amateur players alike
@bradparmar4728
@bradparmar4728 Год назад
I agree. During The scissors kick twisting the torso n trying to maintain balance with the hips parallel ( to net) as possible so as put lest stress on ACL as you describe![ ofcourse now you have the lower Back to worry, since it takes the torque- so hopefully you have a strong core to aid that.

Thanks very much for all the videos you do on techniques. I coach during our school's badminton season, but a few years ago, I blew out my knee and unfortunately can no longer actively demonstrate techniques to students when it comes to court movement, drills, and more advanced techniques. So I rely on excellent videos like yours to show students what I'd like them to work on to improve their skills, and I find that your approach very effective and engaging. Cheers! :)

Congratulations on the 300k, very well deserved! This is I think the only in depth video I've ever seen anywhere on the backhand side jump out, brilliant stuff! One small question, when you land on your non non racket leg, would you recommend turning the foot outwards slightly, I've found sometimes landing with the foot straight puts a bit of pressure on the achilles. I'm getting old now though so most things hurt these days! 😂

Great video to avoid 99% backhand clear in doubles. Maybe you missed one important point as this stroke is risky as well. If this landed on heel then God bless your knee. Always land on your toes. I have seen two bad injuries so far in international badminton... One doubles women who broke her ankle and recent one is Carolina Marin who had to take one year break due to her knee injury.

This is a simple yet efficient technique in doubles and everyone should try this! Even if the smash is not a killer smash, it helps maintaining control and momentum. One common mistake I saw in my own group is that the player usually doesn't consider the recovery. It is easier to recover if you smash right after you falling down from the apex of your jump. Most of the time, I saw the player did heavy smash while rising up before reaching the apex. In that case, if the opponent defended with a counter drive to opposite side, you will not be able to reach the shuttle because you haven't landed yet.
@IgarashiDai
@IgarashiDai Год назад
Very useful pointers, especially for the recovery! I've been doing something similar to this in doubles, but not with the right technique... leading to a lot of lost points because I couldn't recover in time to cover the other side and my partner didn't know I was doing it 😅 otherwise they might have stepped in. This should help a lot! EDIT: Also congrats on 300k subscribers! Well deserved! 😊

I have a question about something else though. I'm a left handed player and when my partner receive the service on the right hand court, he always return the shuttle netting to our right which is left side of our opponent. And they push the shuttle straight, so I have trouble in that scenario as my backhand is not that good. Any ideas to overcome this? and what area should I direct my return in that late backhand shot from the opponent? thx in advance.
