A movie from 1984 is one of the best of 2023 with A24's dazzling 4K restoration of "Stop Making Sense." Jonathan Demme's Talking Heads concert film is widely considered the best of its kind, and it's an especially joyous experience if you can catch it in IMAX. Alonso and Christy had a blast and couldn't wait to talk about it with you. Featuring David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison. In IMAX theaters now, opening wide Sept. 29.

I can't describe the happiness I feel from watching this film. Top 3 all-time, easily for me. It's an ode to the joy of making art, and it's just a pure shot of oddball passion. I love this film so damn much, and am BEYOND thrilled I finally get to see it on the big screen!! Thank you both so much for reviewing it, too! (Now I'm just waiting for the "Something Wild" IMAX remaster 👀)

'Back in the Day' made my parents drive me to the closest theater showing this (3.5 hour round trip) as a belated birthday gift. On the way there it was nonstop complaining about the poor weather and long drive--on the way back it was nonstop discussion about how great the performance was. Talking Heads were my favorite band in the '80s and this film experience cemented that.

What I love about the concert is how very subtlety the stage fills up but it’s never drawing attention to it which is great hardly any establishing shots of people coming out it makes you take notice of it like “how did we get here?” (No pun intended with the once in lifetime song) lol but yeah the fact that the camera is so up close and personal when it DOES zoom out ur like what the hell lol

It’s mesmerizing, right? And that first cut in Once in a Lifetime after holding on a single take of David Byrne for so long is jaw-dropping.

5/5 one of the greatest 🎥s I’ve ever seen. The near 40 year old footage looks like it was shot yesterday. The energy from seeing them all live just shoots into the audience. My fingers and feet were tapping along the whole time. Not a huge talking heads fan but always been a giant fan of “once in a lifetime”.

So, how to explain why this particular concert film, now 40 years old, has endured so well? After all, some would say, it’s just a concert film. Just some band playing a concert, and somebody switched on a camera and captured it. Well, several things: 1. Talking Heads were (and are) a *great* band, and they have a great arsenal of top-notch songs, played to absolute perfection in this concert film by David Byrne and company. 2. They put on one helluva show! I suppose Talking Heads could’ve just stood stationary at their microphones and played, but that just would’ve been so boring. Instead, they put on a *show*, with some really cool theatrics and lots of high-octane energy. So energetic, it had Byrne doing laps around the stage! But that’s not to imply that Talking Heads were “The David Byrne Band.” Everybody on that stage with Byrne are rocking right along with him with everything they got, and the band’s energy is absolutely contagious. 3. The film was beautifully shot. Jonathan Demme made the right choice to keep the cameras focused on the band, rather than constantly cutting to shots of the audience (who basically only appear at the end, really). This makes “Stop Making Sense” all the more immersive for the viewer, a real “You are there” feel to this concert film. I watched “Stop Making Sense” at my local theatre earlier today, and was floored by how great the new remastered print of the film looks and sounds. And of course, I was also floored by the band’s outstanding performance. As someone who never had the good fortune to see Talking Heads live back in the day, their “Stop Making Sense” concert film gave me that experience in full. Great band, great concert film. 😊👍

I just found out my closest IMAX is showing it once a day until Tuesday but it is saying all are Sold Out, and even all 3 daily showings of Barbie. I wonder if that is true or if the projectors went down or something. I've never seen something like that. It is sad that the band never played live after that, so there are no live TH versions of the songs from the last 3 albums.
@danbrown9423

It may not be the best concert on film (although it's certainly in the running), but it's pretty inarguably the best film of a concert. I can't think of another concert film that has cinematography that is as striking as this. And somehow those shots enhance the impact of the music and sense of actually watching it live rather than adding a layer of artifice. And all of that goes doubly for this IMAX release. My fiancée and I saw it on opening night (1st time for her) and it was a borderline religious experience.

i agree with the opinion that this is the best concert movie ever made (yet!). there are others I love, and some have different degrees of concert footage vs documentary footage (Gimme Shelter is more Doc, Woodstock is kind of both, Last Waltz is like a giant party of icons, Tourfilm is an amazing retrospective of REM's 80s career, Sonic youth's 1991 the year punk broke is more accurately the year "grunge" broke and a great look at that era, Tribe Called Quest's Beat's Ryhtmes and Life, list goes on.) But yes the way Demme directs this and the way Bryne and company have everything planned out is so seamless nothing really comes close. TH is not my favorite band, but i am obsessed with their first 5 albums as most people are i suppose that give them a fair listen. One reason this Film is so important is it gives new life to the songs from Speaking in Tongues, an album with a bunch of killer songs but AWFUL production in my opinion. It was the band's first attempt to self produce after Eno left, and it shows. Either way, Stop Making Sense brings to life all songs displayed from that record in killer live versions, as well as Bryne's solo "what a day that It Was" from his Catherine Wheel album and Tom Tom's club's "Genius of Love" and shows that sense of camaraderie that the band displayed at that point, despite some friction (that exists in all band's 😊 As a musician, it constantly influences me to attempt new things. Lastly the way the band showcases their “hits” along side their “album tracks” is maybe the most important thing; they find a balance between crowd pleasing (“Burning Down the House”, “Once in a Life Time”, “Life During Wartime”) and boundary pushing (“Swamp”, “Thank You for Sending Me and Angel”, “Cross-eyed and Painless”) that is extremely difficult to pull off live.

@@BreakfastAllDay I’m having this debate with my friends. They’re saying it shouldn’t since it was released many years ago. They said if we include it this year then based off that logic they’d be able to include any other rerelease this year for our 2023 lists. I kinda lean towards it not being eligible that way it gives the opportunity for an actual 2023 release to have a chance at a top ten spot. Just my opinion.
