I think the most popular criticism about season 2 is honest to god "they undid the all character development by making her stay wierd", and those takes truly baffle me. Like, those critics really watched that absolutely dead inside "normal" Rikka and were like "yeah that's the goal right here". Meanwhile, the most important piece of character development is still there season 2 onward - she got rid of unhealthy coping mechanisms that hurt people around her (that is mostly denial and and all sorts of blame), but stayed wierd because she is a dorky lovable wierdo. These things are not one and the same. That being said, the season 1 had some hard gutpunches for a comedy show, and I really missed them going forward.
Well said. The tell tale sign that she's changed between season 1 and season 2 is the fact that she never even mentions the ethereal horizon anymore. I can't see anyone rooting for Rikka being normal after seeing what it did to her, too. It's sometimes difficult to decipher what characters are really thinking in this show since they speak in demonic haikus, but I think anyone should be able to tell that forcing her to stop being who she is was wrong
@@Totaraum She mentions The Ethereal Horizon once when Satone was asking how Rikka came to meet Yuuta. She says Yuuta helped her find it and now she's helping him awaken the Dark Flame Dragon which Satone knows all about and immediately made Satone want to root for Rikka. It was a cute scene and very heartwarming on the rewatch
I didn't even know this was a thing. My wife and I watched this entire anime last year and loved every second of it. I noticed no difference in "good or bad" during/between/before/after any season/episode/movie.
I was the same way, I watched the show with my brother unaware of how anybody else thought about it. It was only afterwards when I looked into it and found a lot of bitterness and hostility. It was very confusing
I wrote a review of season 2 for an anime site after it aired, and I got a fair bit of hate for my praise of the second season. Like you, I saw the second season as a great extension to the first season. I always saw the series putting comedy before the romance, so I didn't mind the slower pace of the romance. Besides, Rikka and Yuuta have no idea how to handle these feelings that they have for the first time. Satone also helped drive the romance forward, and she never got in the way of Rikka and Yuuta's relationship. Rikka was just jealous of her, and that was it. So I'm glad to see someone else saw things the same way as me back then. Keep up the good work!

I've been waiting for someone to make a video like this since basically no one on youtube has had positive things to say about S2. I've even considered making a video of my own, going as far as drafting a script, but in the end I never ended up making anything. Makes me relieved that this video exists, honestly. I wouldn’t call season 2 bad or anything, I just prefer season 1. Wasn’t a fan of the Nibutani sex offender episode and the 2nd season’s OVA, however I completely agree with you about the napping competition. That is peak slice-of-life comedy.
The fake mori summer one was pretty dumb, yeah. I totally get liking season 1 more. Honestly I feel the same, I just don't see a massive gap in quality between the two
Another thing to note in Season 2 is in Episode 8 where Dekomori meets the Natsumi who claim to be Mori Summer, she was actually seen earlier in the background in certain episodes such as Episode 2 where she was seen holding a camera when Kumin, Dekomori and Nibutani are following Yuta and Rika in the Supermarket and later in Episode 4 we see her again but briefly in EcDonalds (cheeky way of parody of McDonalds find that funny) with love in her eyes as she was looking at Dekomori while being pinned by Nibutani. I never noticed the foreshadowing until I came across a random comment whilst rewatching Season 2 which I do give the show credit.
If anything Satone is a catalyst that lights a fire under Rikka's ass to develop the relationship, in the episode where she is first introduced, when she touches noses with Yuuta, it pushes Rikka to do the same when before she probably would have waited even longer to do so.
I really enjoyed both and also thought they were of similar quality. I honestly didn't know people didn't think they were both great. What an eye-opener.
Season 2 is a masterpiece, just like season 1. I love them equally. In fact, the whole Chunibyo anime series is a masterpiece! I loved season 2 because it was what I loved about season 1; cute anime characters doing cute things and living their life, hence the slice of life. The progression was slow because it was supposed to be slow. The fact that some got mad at it shows that they do not know what peak slice of life is. As a slice of life mega fan, season 2 was amazing. The ONLY thing I don’t like about it is that it was the final season ;-;
Season 1 gave us an unstable and disturbing view of these delusions as an issue of "I can fix her", finally, Yuuta "fixes" her delusions but...what now? Yuuta goes back on his decision and takes responsibility for Rikka at the end of season 1, then season 2 adapts a mild and laid-back perspective that provides peace, on a writing standpoint, it is undeniably coherent to the season 1. btw, my sister watched season 2 first for unspecified reasons, and was absolutely hooked enough to convince everyone to watch it.
i felt like they shouldnt have done a season 2 in the first place but since they did, they could have done alot more with yuuta and rikkas relationship than just going from pinky holding to hand holding but it is what it is i guess, the episode where they both go to the water park and the school trip was such a perfect setup! loved the other characters getting their own little episodes though XD, also i made an entire video basically shitting on season 2 but uh...guess some of my opinions have changed : l
After 5 years I waited for someone to defend this season but I get that people hate the second season it's all just filler episodes like there's literally no progression as a satone defender for how long she was introduced and I like how you explained her I been telling people that for 5 fking years but hopefully people understand that this season is not bad what's so ever.
I've watched this video 3 times and while I will admit you did not change my mind on season 2 you did sorta change my mind slightly on the pink haired girl and think I may go back and rewatch the 2nd season and observing her based on the information you gave regarding her like her ability to solve her love issues without dragging everyone in and making a big deal about them

So I just binged all of Love Chinubyo and Other Delusions and I felt that overall it was a top notch slice of life anime series. That being said I definitely think the story arc in season one was a far more satisfying one than that of season two. I do feel that Shichimiya's sudden appearance in season two felt sort of contrived at first, but the character grew on me as the season went on. Her personal battle wrestling with her feelings for Yuta was handled quite well in my opinion. It helped redeem any notions of her being a "homewrecker" in the end. While season two didn't quite shine in the way season one did, I cannot say I see why everyone gives it such a hard time.

I'm your $50 tier patron. I will never forgive you for calling #1 waifu Rikka a dumbass. Say goodbye to that subscription money. /s This show hit me really hard with its themes fitting in and finding a place or group of people you belong to in your entirety. Flaws, stupid habits, opinions and all. I immediately fell in love with Rikka because of her antics and mannerisms and I can write a doctoral thesis on how and why my watch of what I thought was going to be a silly, fun anime to spend a Saturday evening in a slower season last year turned into me binging all of season 1 and leaving me ugly crying - like full on lip quivering and all - at 1:00AM on a Sunday. I couldn't watch season 2 or the movie(s?) because I thought season 1 wrapped up everything perfectly, and I appreciate you giving a brief overview of it along with your thoughts and opinions so I don't have to potentially sour my very fond memory of Chuunibyou. Please keep up the stellar and thoughtful discussions on our favorite anime and games! Seriously tho - don't talk shit on Rikka. Season 1 is definitely a complete story, I really like it’s themes and message as well. I see season 2 and the movie as kind of a continuation of these ideas, it being neither a good or bad thing in my mind that they exist. I can see why someone wouldn’t want to watch them though. Also I am very sorry, please do not write a yelp review, my manager is on their last straw with me already
Video isn't done but the only thing I didn't like about Love Chunibyo season 2 is that they took the direction of "oh yeah i just conveniently forgot about this really close friend of mine." When like, as far as I remember, the gap between them knowing each other and Yuuta moving to a new school would have been very short Otherwise I liked it just as much as the first season.
Good video! I pretty much agree with everything here. Randomly remembering an old friend is a trope that has been used in other media like Nisekoi too. They're not deal breakers atleast.

She just left him one day and on top of that he tries to bury his past so I can't imagine him bringing her up in season 1 without a really good reason to do so. @@Totaraum Yeah I think that's fair enough. My thoughts were kinda like, if you're a chunibyo and you got a chunibyo buddy, I'd think it would have been somewhat worth mentioning instead of just being seen as a chunibyo loner in the first season. But again, not a deal breaker at all.
That does happen a lot, and it's not that you forget about them, you just move on with your life and it's not worth mentioning to your new friends. None of the friends I made when I started highschool knew about my very close friends from 8th grade, because we slowly drifted apart over the summer and deep down we all knew that was the end of our friendship. I think it was pretty realistical, things move fast at that age and people move on and adapt to the new environment with new people.

It's undeniably tame and light hearted when compared to season 1. Also worth of note is that Shichimya is in fact a homewrecker, a yandere light if you will, in the second light novel. And the latter is probably a huge reason why, she's just so utterly tame in season 2 and on top of that you're supposed to feel sorry for her? When you shup Rikka and Yuuta? Just my two cents..

When season 2 was released I heard a lot of negative reviews and was hesitant but it didn't stop me from watching it ( nibutani best waifu). It was avg at best not good nor bad for me. The movie was awesome though.

As an enjoyer of Oreimo S2 I can relate to man from the intro. And regarding S2 of chunibyo, I enjoyed that as well. Still thought the first was better. After all, it had that mini boar thing.

But seriously, I don't know how people can dislike even a single thing about this series -- everything from the beginning of S1 to the very post credits scene of the movie is a masterpiece. One of the best, cutest and most wholesome romances I've ever seen since I started watching anime.
I do. the chibyuo thing the characters do is pretty cringee. it comes off as more of a annoying gimmick rather then part of the story. the characters are very indecisive and lack confidence in them selfs. the male protagonist is one of the worst ive seen. he cant make up his damn mind if he wants to be chibyou or not. plus he extremely emotional for a male. I would like to have seen more of a logical approach to counter the girls bizarre nature.
shichimiya and nibutani are the best part in s2. nibutani grows as a better character than in s1. shichimiya however is the better version of rikka, no cap.
one thing bothers me is why didnt Rikka didnt feel after effects of season 1's events. I mean she denies her identity how would someone brush it off with no trauma Also love satones ark. like seeing her accept reality was nice.
one thing i didnt like is how the characters development went to 0. like fr the only character that changed was Sataone. her change was accepting rikka and yuta. Rikka is still in her bad romance life and is chunybio. honestly she seems more like an asshole bc it feels like she stole yuta. yuta still doesnt know how to talk to girls and stepped into the role of rikka's sister instead of boy friend. there rromanace life feels impossible tbh . Kumin had no development she was just there for comedy. like last season kumin has ishygi where into eachother. but they throw it out. and flanderize kumins nap quirk. while making ishygi a joke/gag. and the rest. Are eh. nibutani wants in in the plot and she gets in by spying on rikka. and sanae was Idk still the same.
People who dislike the second season purely because "Shichimiya was getting in between Rikka and Yuuta" are so insecure it's almost laughable. Some harsh truths: Not everyone can always end up with the person they're in love with, and sometimes people fall in love with someone who's already in a relationship. Love can be difficult like that and it happens both in anime and in real life. So if your insecurities can't handle that, then maybe you shouldn't watch anime... or leave your mom's basement.
the only thing i dislike about s2 is no kiss scene and introducing shichimiya as the new love interest to interupt rikka and yuuta relation ship instead as well as few episodes that are meh
There's no denying s1 was definitely way better. Rikka's dual sadness (about not reaching unseen horizon +father's death), fear of group getting disbanded, even the ultra chuuni Dekomori confessing about reality when Rikka ignored her.. everything felt incredibly serious. But I'm glad we got s2.
I personally prefer Satone and would choose someone like her IRL over Rikka That said if she was just gonna be introduced for half-assed melodrama I'd prefer if they didnt
I dont think season 2 is bad I think its mid I have alot more problems about it and I didn't agree with some of these problems aswell but the ones I did agree on I still hold to them.
I have yet to watch season 2. Rika was too adorable to resist in season 1, and with the trashing season 2 gets, I haven't had the courage to watch. The vague comparison to Clannad (the gold standard to SOL) is also kind of bold.
Oh, I don't think Chunibyo comes anywhere close to being as good as Clannad. Two very different leagues. They both just share the miraculous ability of getting me to tolerate anime romance. I do recommend giving season 2 a chance, it's quite similar to the first one
@@Totaraum To be honest, I don't think it's about which is better, more that they're great in their own right. Clannad gets you in the feels and gives you laughs, but Chunibyo is more about giving you smiles and wholesomeness.
Lol I'm about to get some hate with this comment. I wonder how many people will actually read this whole thing. I agree and disagree with some points made in this video about season 2. I'll address points made by this video but ill add my own points as well that are not mentioned in the video. (point 9) about subverting expectations, Chuunibyou's identity as an anime and why I believe the first season was received better than the second. If you wish to see my point Instead of the responses to the video read #9. Just a disclaimer : I don't think season 2 was bad I just don't think it is as good as season 1. It just never had the same impact as season 1. I also think that season 2 has specific points that are even better than in season 1 but depending on how much time I put in this comment I might not include it. (Also if I miss some details, my bad. I haven't watched the anime in a while) 1. comedy is the same quality and were able to see more of the characters out and about like a slice of life anime. not bad 2. Isshiki's character was overall a lazy move and he could've been integrated somehow in the story. It feels like he's a character that is a loose end that no one can shake off. 3. "romance is too slow" I agree how that could be considered a non argument if the assumption is that Shichimiya is a great character. I think people that said that had issues with Shichimiya being the person in the way of the relationship. In a way Totaraum does have a point mentioning that she's the character that sort of forces Takanashi to make moves but I think people wanted natural development. My opinion is that "romance is too slow" is a comment that always needs more details. This is because for me I'll most likely mention how there wasn't much in terms of character progression in place of romance. For most people it'll most likely domino effect back to Shichimiya, complaining why she's a forced character for a forced plot. "Towards the END OF THE SHOW it feels like they take a small but impactful step forward EVERY EPISODE." that wording and delivery was smooth but I still think its straight copium. 4."this is an unnecessary sequel" This is something that I fully agree with. The first season was complete and was a full story (In your words a "self containing story"). The first story was designed to end at the first season. Even if there wasn't straight tongue action and 50 shade of gray material, every episode had meaningful events that cannot be skipped. No one cared that the two didn't make out because there was a lot of rapid character building and development. The only exception is episode 7 with Isshiki but only because he becomes irrelevant and becomes a punching bag. Most of season 2s start seems meaningless to the overall plot and Shichimiya is a issue. (explained at #5-6) If anyone mentions that because the start was treated like a slice of life anime there couldn't be any development, that is absolutely false. Animes that are full fledged slice of life or comedy can also have character development especially at the start of a second season at the beginning of a new school year. There is more than enough time to add small changes in characters if necessary. I thought Nibutani's black hair would be a sign of one of those elements of a new development but it only becomes a subplot that fell flat that didn't seem to matter. Overall It was a very difficult task to beat or match the 1st season. Although the 2nd season exceeded my expectations, it wasn't good enough to match the first season. Points about Shichimiya 5. "she's in the way" sure but that's part of the plot. Her involvement wasn't the issue. The issue was the delivery. It was never handled well and everything seemed very sudden. Although its still lightly based on the novel, The plot seemed like it was about the two lovers and them (in Totaraums words) "refusing to conform to society's standard of love" and how what they do is "natural progression" but it got pushed aside and poked and prodded by a subplot about a random girl named Shichimiya Satone randomly placed in the story to add drama synthetically. In my eyes, Shichimiya IS 100% a character worth adding due to her emotional nature and complexity but subverting expectations from the starting plot in a negative way will definitely push some people away. If she was added as a transfer student (yeah I get that its overused its just an example calm down) and blended in as a member of the group it would have been more gradual. How she (In Totaraums words) "materializes out of thin air whenever the group is doing something fun" is just simply unnatural. Her very touchy nature is also something that is viewed as annoying and flirty than friendly. Now even though I have not attended Highschool in Japan, As a Japanese person I can confirm that culturally this doesn't make any sense whatsoever in Japan. Even hugs that I've found to be considered normal (in some cases) between genders for friends in north America, its really weird for Japanese people to do that whatsoever. The excuse of "because she has chuunibyou" is such a hard pill to swallow right off the bat. 6. The writers made her as a sort of antagonist to Takanashi from the start In a world and story without any real Antagonists. She manages to have the hots for Togashi, still being awfully friendly, but gets shy and blushes whenever she simply imagines her with Togashi in a classroom together......Does that make sense? She also does the nose touch right after finding out Togashi is taken. The writers made her seem like she's attempting to take him for herself right after finding out he's taken rather than acting simply due to habits, attraction to him or friendliness. If you've picked up on these actions made by her you would immediately assume that she's got the worst intentions and that she might even be possessive and deceptive. Sure its wrong to completely rule her out as a complete bitch but her actions say otherwise. Again, its all about the delivery, not digiorno 7. 15:51 there was a mention about how Shichimiyas introduction is justified because the same thing happened in the first season. That is exactly the issue. It repeated the same thing. In the first season it was originally looked at as a chance encounter but I found that the story doing the same thing the second time around is quite annoying and makes things less engaging. 8. 16:58 I would have to agree. She's a very strong character with weaknesses, strengths and courage with realistic actions that are rarely seen in other animes. 9. Now finally my main reason why I don't like the second season. a) The first season used character introductions and subplots to better understand the supporting characters this includes characters like Nibutani Shinka and her actions to erase all trace of her chuunibyou past. this made episodes meaningful, informative and it eventually helped build the main plot while still being a sort of filler. The second season tried to use the same method but had absolutely nothing to introduce other than one single character that was introduced poorly and negatively. (read 6.) b) The second season steers slightly away from the originality that the 1st season had. The first season had subverting expectations with the introduction of Nibutani as a hot waifu for our main protagonist but that goes straight out the window. we are met instead with a plot that is insanely complex for a romance anime with only 12 episodes and they keep subverting expectations with sudden slapstick comedy to moments like the realization that Takanashi doesn't need to return back to "normal", For the second season the comedy stayed the same but in terms of the story we expect everything that happens and.... it happens. Nothing stood out as a surprise. This is the reason why people complained about Shichimiyas similar introduction as Takanashi with the apartments. The only thing that stood out was the fact that Shichimiya was introduced like a Antagonist trying to steal Takanashi's man after finding out that the two were together. (read 6.) A perfect example of Great character, terrible initial execution. c) In the first season, character development and romance was packed together. The second season lacks major character development (on the main characters compared to the first season) while slightly improving on romance. The story leaned heavily on Shichimiya rather than the 2 main characters. I believe most episodes should have been Jam-Packed with info and definitely could've included Shichimiya better while the OVAs and extra episodes after should've had the extended Slice of life content that everyone wants a bit of. This would make people engaged without any expectations while watching all the beach episodes. but hey I ain't a anime director or anything like that so..... maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.
I thought the movie Take On me was better than season 2. Didn't think s2 was bad though, and certainly don't understand why people hate on it. The first movie was just a weird retelling of s1, and if you never watched the first season, you'd be utterly lost..
