I've had people ask me "what kind of gun should I get" when they find out I'm a gun owner and go to the range often. My reply is "It's best that you come tonthe range with me and rent some of the pistols the range has to rent. It will give you a chance to see how it feels in your hands and how it shoots", but I always say, take lessons from a certified instructor.

Cert Instructors don't always have common sense either, I've run into more than a few lately and it baffles me as to how they've managed to get as far as they have in their field. A great example is an old friend of mine went to our local indoor range, signed up and was consulted by the mostly younger staff of "instructors", now he's found himself with a gun that he's got well over 1k invested and can't conceal it anywhere on his person because these so-called "instructors" basically sold him on the idea that he needed what is essentially a weapon better suited for mil-spec ops and Leo applications, but is practically useless in civilian self defense scenarios where concealment is paramount.. 🙄

I understand your premise of your video but you do not have to be a certified instructor to give accurate advice for a first time gun owner. Anyone knowledgeable of weapons and not Brand bias would suffice. Even in your scenario you persuaded that person to something you like. The best opinion I've found to help is for that new owner to try as many weapons as possible for the application they plan on using it for

I couldn’t agree more. I eagerly purchased a Taurus 9mm to get accustomed to using a firearm because my agency was sending me off for training. I completed my 9 weeks of training, and realized I hated the gun that I purchased. I eventually sold the Taurus 9mm, and bought exactly what I needed. This is some of the best advice about gun ownership I’ve seen on RU-vid.

I love the way you started this hard, then broke it down into the questions that need to be answered before recommending a product. Knowing what the client wants to use it for among other variables is essential in putting the right product in the customer's hands and avoiding complaints later.

I hate to say it but there are people IN BIG POSITIONS asking this question. Granted they were simply trying to spark conversation amongst a large group; it's just not the right question to ask: "what gun would you recommend to a beginner . . ." Too many nuances to answer. You are spot on here! After I listed those nuances and 'need to knows' . . . I did answer the question (just to answer the question).

I get where you were trying to go with the doctor analogy but it doesn't really hold up. Because being a doctor is a practice. Which means they're practicing medicine emphasis on practicing. Yes they will ask you different questions about your symptoms and pain levels and all of these type of things and then they'll give their recommendation which could be inaccurate. And it could not take care of the symptoms that you have because they don't know exactly what is causing the issue. Cuz it could be one issue causing the symptoms or it could be multiple issues causing multiple symptoms.

I like your response to the questions like that. Most of the students I see coming in for CHL classes already have something, but most of the time they haven’t ever fired it. If pressed, my recommended pistol is currently a Taurus TX22 as they tend to work.

Very true. When I got my first EDC it was a 40 S&W since I'm a huge fan of it, but it did end up being sort of a mistake because I found myself not being able to train with it very often because of my budget, and 40 S&W ammo is not cheap LOL. I've had it for almost a year and I've literally only put maybe 350 rounds through it, but recently I switched to a Springfield Hellcat barely more than a month ago, and I already have 700 rounds through it training with it because 9 mm ammo is plenty affordable to me. Thanks for the video,

I EDC the g2c cause it has had no malfunctions and it works for me, when people ask me about firearms when we're on the topic I ask have you shot before if not get comfortable with a 22 pistol at the range, learn the fundamentals, if you're wanting to carry hold some guns ask to shoot the ones you like that feel good in the hand. In not an instructor but if they're to stubborn ill send them to a instructor cause I had one person who's never shot have the mind set of I can go right in and shoot a 44 magnum 😂

I bought a Redhawk in 44Mag as my first handgun, then I discovered 44Spl ammo. What joy!!! The grip felt right, far better than others. My suggestion to those asking me is to go shopping for a tennis racquet--the same principles of grip size, surface feel, proportion, and heft all apply there as to handguns. An experienced tennis racquet shopper will be a better handgun shopper.

Afternoon Sir Your advice is accurate. On point. The exception being in Law Enforcement, Military. Give you a prime example. The NYPD which offers primarily 3 choices in firearms. Glock19, Smith Wesson , Sigsauer. Glock being the smallest of the three. Then to compound matters. You have the NYPD trigger 10, pounds. So all recruits have to adjust to firearm. Not adjusting the firearm to the shooter. Not bashing. When the NYPD issued revolvers. J frames SW. They did take into account. People with smaller hands. 🤔 Now I know you’re addressing for the most part. Novices, home defense, concealed carry civilians. I know as a certified instructor. You can teach around bad firearm suggestions, purchases. Keep up the great advice!!!! It’s needed an appropriated C

Always do your research and try different weapons to see what works. I consider myself new because it's been so many years since I was in the military and handled a weapon. I just completed training and now I plan to go to the range that rents guns and try them before making a decision once my application has been approved. I live in MD and can't do anything until I get my HQL, although I may be able to go to the range because I was honorably discharged from the military. I will have to check with the range because everyone doesn't always know the laws. I will eventually take more training once I determine which gun I want so I can become proficient with it. This is a marathon and not a sprint for me.

I advised myself on selecting my first handgun after watching the best gun review channels on You Tube for more than a year. I live in California and I picked a Glock 17 Gen 3. I wanted it for the range and for home defense. When I feel I'm ready to conceal carry I want to get a Glock 19 Gen 3. Now if I didn't have the California Gun Roster to deal with I'd like a G19X and a G43X too. Perhaps one day Boland v. Bonta will be decided in the favor of the gun owning community and the gun roster will cease to be there.

You have some good points. I always say the best gun is the one you will train with effectively. Also I tell them go to a range and rent the gun that they want as there EDC. You are one of the good instructors. Definitely was hitting the nails on the head building good points. If I do recommendations like you said, it is what I see about the individual. Like if I see they are old and have atheritis, I say try and S&W E-Z, followed by try to rent one and see how you like it before you buy it. I can work with you on whatever you purchase….you just have to do your part and practice hard with what you got. We follow all of these GunTubers these days and scream these brands are the best. I have someone going out getting a Walther PPQ, Staccato, Canik TTI, or some $2,000 because to GunTubers if your gun isn’t Turkish, regurgitated likes by popular GunTubers, Red Dot Ready, has a rail for lights, has a 1.5lbs trigger, then your edc choice is crap. Then you give in to what they deem cool. Now you are in a gun fight and get handed hot brass and a casket because you trained with a recommended gun that wasn’t a good fit for you, you trained with it once a month if that, it was too heavy, you didn’t shoot it enough to see it get to the point of weak-links like roll pins coming loose/ dead triggers/ mags drop on their own/ slides lock back/ firing pin tip breaks, the well known issues of that firearm. Or you get a gun that you just bought, threw a performance trigger with a .50lbs trigger, carry it appendix, then have a ND blowing your boys up like popping balloons on your bday. I love all three big diesels. I have a Ram 3500 myself. I will never say Ram or die though because Ram is just a good fit for me. A problematic truck that I as once a Tech 1 diesel Tech can work on myself at home. You might get a Denali 3500 and performance kill my truck. That’s the truck that makes you happy. A Ford F-350 guy may mark us both out. That works for him. At the end of the day my low hp, crappy factory ball joint setup, clogged vgt turbo every 50 or 60k(sometimes waaaaay less) is still the truck for me. I can deal with all of that at home without getting hit by the dealer or a mom and pop shop. I’ll still love to own all 3.

TBH this not a good video. I’ve been a “certified” instructor for years. For instance a revolver. For a novice a revolver is far superior. I’ve never had a novice female student that could even manipulate a semi auto. A revolver can easily be made safe. A semi auto is not for a novice. If they are old or weak a rimfire da revolver might be just the ticket. NOBODY is capable on a semi auto after a 4 hr clas and 50 rds. Impossible.
