Privit Inna, I understand all of your comments. I have grown up with the same ignorance all my life (68 years) . Yes I understand your frustrations. I was born in Australia to Ukrainian parents. I have longed to visit the lands of my heritage but sadly this may never happen. You are a ray of sunshine and an inspiration to learn the language (again) of my ancestors. I'm Ukrainian Canadian on both sides of my family and I too planned to visit Ukraine to complete my family tree. Who knows if this will happen now? I try not to hate orcs but it's not easy. Luckily I know a couple of great Russians here and they help to deflect my anger from orcs.

I am a British citizen from birth and have an amazing Ukrainian girlfriend and you have raised many of the comments that frustrate myself I get asked by my British friends. I truly believe they mean no harm, but just need educating around their naive empathy for Ukrainians and this video will be shared to help! thank you :) keep up the great lessons

Greetings from Vancouver. Many people are simply insensitive, lacking insight. I'm not Ukrainian (my wife is) but I've been a bit traumatized by the war events as well. This is all a learning curve how to cope, keep perspective regarding others, take care of ourselves etc...and this is ongoing. Hard to do at times for sure. Slava Ukraini -

It’s like saying French and English are similar because some words looks similar and they use the same letters. Ukraine has its own unique alphabet! There are simply too many uneducated and uncultured people, sorry you dealt with that 😐

Several European languages have their own unique Latin-based alphabets, including French (and Danish, Swedish, German...) Some linguists might think of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish as simply dialects of a core nordic language, meanwhile Swedes pretend not to understand Danish and insist on speaking English. 😂 Some linguists have - partly in jest - said that a language is a dialect with an army. By that criteria, Ukrainian certainly is a strong language. ❤

Sure but u cant blame people for being uneducated and/or uncultured, u can blame their parents and/or state and if u are not part of the solution by explaining again and again until there are no more uneducated and/or uncultured people then I am sorry to tell u that but u are part of the problem. U can always walk away and ignore people and they will stay uneducated and/or uncultured but then dont complain, that would be hypocritical.

I don't know if it helps, but as a northern Scandinavian who lived in the UK for a while I was also met with lots of ignorance. One native Brit even seriously asked me if I had ever seen snow. 😳 🤣🤣🤣 I don't know why, but some English people pride themselves on being ignorant and uneducated, as if that is something to be proud of. It's so weird. I can definitely understand your frustration.

We have a massive amount of people throughout the USA that pride themselves as being ignorant. Pride in never reading books. Proud that they never use facts or data when they communicate. Proud to believe things that are not truth because they don't fit with their ignorant beliefs and ignorant ways of life. We have huge media that uses these folks ignorance to make their millions in advertising. This is our great divide in the USA. As more knowledge becomes available to all, our divide becomes greater. The ignorant keep talking of an upcoming civil war.They don't realize that it has already started.The people of knowledge have started pulling away and giving up them as hopeless. No more ignorant communications with people who "pride" themselves in never reading.

I am a Brit, in the UK. Yes, of course there are many ignorant or stupid people everywhere. What keeps me going is to remember that 50% of people have an IQ less than 100. 🤣🤣🤣

Many Ukrainians I know can't really speak Ukrainian. They are actively "trying" to speak it. It's mostly Ukrainians who come from the east of the country, especially Kharkiv. When we communicate via txt or email it's in the "other" language. I do get it. Language is fluid and varies depending on where you live. It's the same in Switzerland, depending on where they live. Close to Italy, Germany, France or Austria. Culture is way more important than language. My Ukrainian friends who speak the "other" language are 100% Ukrainian in culture. Totally. I wish more people spread your message. It's important. 👍🏻🇬🇧❤️🇺🇦

Language is a part of the culture. Which is why r*ssians have been actively trying to wipe and substitute Ukrainian for centuries. It's a part of the identity too. All your examples of countries have their own imperialist past, which puts them in line with r*ssia, not Ukraine. Thus, your comparison is harmful and misguided at best. Educate yourself.

I volunteer to help Ukrainians with their spoken English. I know that this isn't your typical Ukrainian lesson video, but it's an important cultural lesson. This is a great video to share with my fellow volunteers for them to understand the mindset of Ukrainians today. I was already aware about your points as I know some Ukrainians myself) it's a great refresher for myself to make sure I remain respectful and empathetic. Дуже дякую, Інно!

@@samantharay9116 But it was the Ukrainians who fought on Hitler’s side. Many of them served in the SS. Many of them participated in the extermination of Jews. Many of them participated in the extermination of Poles and Belarusians. During the Volyn massacre, Ukrainians killed about 200,000 Poles over the course of a month. Almost all of the victims were women and children and almost all of them were killed with knives and axes. In this way, the brave Ukrainians saved ammunition. This is all we need to know about the Ukrainians and their mindset.

Thank you very much for your explanations. I have started studying Ukrainian through a language school in Kyiv this summer, I am making good progress. I totally agree with your views that it hurts Ukrainians hearing some of these phrases you mention. I have a Facebook profile and therefore I post my self written texts about my feelings regarding Ukraine. I am a big supporter of your country. It hurts me a lot what happens to your country. I write my texts in English. For me it is kind of a coping strategy. I first saw you in interview with Johnny FD.

I have made that mistake with Ukrainians I knew, until one day a girl educated me and, to my realization, told me Ukrainian and ruZZian are two different languages (until then I used to think Ukrainians spoke ruzzian with a different accent). As a Brazilian, I should have known better, since people constantly try to speak Spanish with me. What's curious, though, is that Brazilians usually understand Spanish quite easily, while Spanish-speakers can't understand a word I say in Portuguese. I'm guessing it's kind of the same for you, ruzzians can't understand Ukrainians, but you can understand them? In any case, it's curious how understanding of languages sometimes only go one way, an unfortunate mirroring of the asymmetric relationship between countries. That's why I kind of like the idea of Esperanto. Hugs from Brazil.

I'm Ukrainian and people ask me lots of offensive stuff. One example is "Do you have family involved in the war?" or "I've never been friends with a Ukrainian!" 1. I don't usually want to talk about the war. 2. Don't treat being friends with me like I'm a rare object to check off your list. The ignorance of some people has always disappointed me.

I have Ukrainian on my mom's side and love to learn new words in the language. I'm Ashkenazi on my paternal grandfather's side and so I'm interested in learning Hebrew and Yiddish. I've also learnt Spanish for a few decades and love singing Spanish music at karaoke. It's so interesting to learn different languages.

Oh wow I am so shocked that you have been asked these questions it is very bizarre behaviour 😳... I am shocked ! I live in Barnsley South Yorkshire and up here we fully support Ukraine and no one here would ever ask these questions we know all that is happening, we even have lots of history and past relations with Ukraine our Twin town is Horlivka and many Ukrainians have settled here in the past. We even have Horlivka beer made here 😀. I don't visit London much now but I have found that many people from there are not well educated about the world. It is not everyone but it sure is embarrassing 😳. Keep educating people and spread the language I have learned all of the swear words from one of your earlier videos 😀 its one of my favorite videos... Thank you for making this important video! I will share it on Facebook in just a moment. About 25 years ago I got the opportunity to go to Ukraine's far west (Zakarpattia) and I have followed the country ever since. About a year ago, I talked to a Ukrainian woman who had recently moved to my area in the US. She was from Lviv. It was the first time I could talk to a native Ukrainian person about the war, and it was a good conversation, but difficult. At the end, I told her that I hoped her friends and family were staying safe. "No one is safe in Ukraine", she said. I felt so bad! 😭 I am sure she knew I meant well, but I still regret saying that 😥 I hope I have more time for Ukrainian in the coming year. 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦♥️

Saying "similar" is not the same as saying "same". In your example, Spanish and Portuguese ARE similar. Not the same, not at all. But similar, yet. 90% lexical similarity. They are both in the Latin language family, geographically their origins are near each other, and there are a lot of words in common, or at least that are cognates with the same roots.

That's an incorrect comparison. If you want to name a language similar to Ukrainian, there's Belarusian, Rusyn, Polish, Slovak, Czech. All these are *much* closer, than r*ssian.

I think denial in Slav origins is like Australians denying English origins, but in any case I hope peace can prevail some day in Europe and instead of trying to find differences people can see similarities between them.

Thank you for all you do, as an American coming from a family of respect of others at all costs will and can say that I agree with you 100 present on all you say here! Also, as far as topics go with any Ukrainian, I will not out of all due respect, not bring about such topics or question to any Ukrainian, unless they initiate from themselves wanting to talk about a topic, absolutely avoiding any additional and possible unknown upset. For me it is of vital important in having to do with respect and also showing care even when some may think differently, to not add extra hurt to a already very upset person or persons, and not be out right in offering or leading the way in any conversation at times like this, but best to let Ukrainians talk and lead the way as they may wish. Lead with the heart and less with the mind if one would be better able to understand that point better. Once again awesome to see the light of another Ukrainian here and showing us something exciting and new. very enjoyable I may add too. best wishes from many of us here, your friends from USA.

Just the other day had to enlighten my fellow Finns during a lunch when they asked my Ukrainian friend the same questions. Russians don't understand Ukrainian. Same as Finnish vs. Estonian. Some same or similiar words but I don't understand what they speak. It sounds funny.

The Ukrainian people are remarkably brave for the courage they have shown standing against evil. Many people don't necessarily ask these questions out of intent to hurt. They might just be ignorant of the differences between the two countries. Best wishes from Canada. Slava Ukraini!

I do not know how the languages compare in form, but I assume that they are somewhat structured the same, like my Norwegian versus Swedish. If I was a Norwegian teacher and someone said, "so you are a Swedish teacher?" I would indeed be very confused. Yes, for fluent speakers of Norwegian it is common to be able to understand Swedish (with some trouble as you must know some words that are completely different) but the gramar, spelling and context of the languages are different. However, because Norway and Sweden is not at war and generally is not likely to go to war the next few decades, it would not be insulting to me, it would only be insulting to them for looking like idiots.

Well, it depends a lot on the dialect too. Norwegian is in many ways like a Swedish dialect and vice versa. The dialects in the cities/towns of Arvika, Karlstad, Säffle or Årjäng, it's not that different from Norwegian. :) It's probably even more similar up north, like Trondheim and Åre(?) However, if you're a gute, born and raised on Gotland for instance, it becomes a bit harder to understand Norwegian.

Norwegian and Swedish are somewhat twice times closer to one another than Ukrainian and Muscovian. Anybody can confuse languages that are grouped linguistically into one family, like Germanic, Slavic, Turkic or Romance.

Some things in Swedish have a very differnt meaning in Norwegian like ”en rar tös” which means a sweet little girl in Swedish. Very different in Norwegian. The word ”rolig” means funny in Swedish but calm in Norwegian.

I have a question about perogies. My baba immigrated to Canada from Ukraine taught us perogies were called pedaheh. is there a difference between "dumplings" and pedeheh?

Well, pierogi is a Polish word, for dumplings we have another one - varenyky.

I just loved the portuguese-Spanish comparison. Very enlightening and it shows your amazing culture. They have the same root, nay sound similar sometimes to forigners but they are definitely two separate and different languages.

For people who need some perspective: London is in the Southern part of England, Kiev is in the Northern part of Ukraine. Despite Kiev being in the Northern part of Ukraine it is still more South than London. Crimea is in fact shares the same Parallel (45th) that goes through the lower quarter of France. I am originally from Edmonton Alberta (affectionately called Edmonchuk due to the high population of Ukrainians). Just East of Edmonton is a town named Vegreville, the "Welcome to Vegreville" sign is a giant Ukrainian Easter Egg. My heart is broken at this senseless war, I have no words to describe the ache.

Oh yeah I feel you on that one lol cuz I speak Portuguese but other people confuse it with Spanish and some of us Brazilians get mad over that including me, like OMG we are different SHEESH it also bothers me when someone even tries speaking Spanish to me when I’ve LITERALLY told them that I’m from Brazil so I’d really understand you on that one. Indeed it has become sort of a stereotypical mistake, but the real nonsense is when westerners call the country "the Ukraine" instead of Ukraine. Russians favour to say "na Ukraine" because they find that offensive, and Ukrainians get pissed too, but very ironically that is technically NOT a problem: the form "na Ukraïni" comes from a directly specific, thousand years old case of saying "na Rusi" (on Rus' Land) - which at this point greatly showcases straight historical inheritance from Rus', turning tables around in the matter of hilarious Kremlin myth about "new-made" country.

I teach ESL at a community college in the States, and there are both Ukrainians and Russians together in some of my classes... I know better than to make any comparisons between the two countries and I make sure that the war is never brought up in class.

Hello, Inna. Exactly what i was thinking about, when you told the example about spanish and portuguese and that it's not the same language although people think it is the same. I have to say that since february 2022 i've watched and read the news about Ucraine on a daily basis, i read as much as i can and my instagram is 75% ucrainian. Here in Philadelphia area in USA, locals still refer to ALL post-Soviet immigrants as RUSSIANS, be it to ppl from Uzbekistan, or Armenia, or Georgia , or Tuva, or Ukraine! It's infuriating! Before this ungodly war started, I knew some things about Ukraine, but since I have learned so much more. First keep on with the effort and great content of your channel. Regarding to the inappropriate comments you get, you will not be able to control this, the only thing you can control is your reaction. I am latin and I was in Ukraine last year and a lot of people thought my mother tongue was English. Spanish was not in their radar, so I shortly educated people through my answers, so you will get some silly questions/comments always when traveling. Also is good to meditate on how much do we know about other countries situations and cultures, I am sure we all have been inappropriate at some point.

A small story about ukr language. Last summer my nephew was getting married in ohio. It turns out his mom is ukrainian, but brought to the usa as a young child so she didn't remember ukr or speak the language, in fact she rarely told people her heritage. But she had asked her father where in Ukraine the family was from before he died. She didn't understand the answer but she recorded what he said. I was able to send the recording to a new ukr friend who told me it was a village in a certain oblast not too far from a city. I was able to tell her and her sisters about their origin because i had met some wonderful ukrainians online! Also i sent pictures of my nephew and my ukr friends all said he looked like a cossack, definitely ukrainian blood! 😂

One of my friends, Natalya from Truskavets does the same work as you do. We have lost contact. The last time I heard she was getting married and moving to Sweden. I hope she is safe.

Now that you are in London, please advise if you note the differences between English and American? Vase in English and Ukrainian is pronounced the same, both languages being European, but I think you pronounce vase in the American way, using their accent. My favourite example is toilet. Toilet is the same word across Europe and all English speaking countries except America. I would appreciate your observation on this, now that you are in England, in Europe.

We support you. It is hard to imagine because US and British and Australian, NZ being different. It is not meant to be rude. Certain words or phrases are different. Obviously, US English is the largest, but we aren’t England.
