The flag in this video be like: "F**k this shit, I'm out!" :) Thank you for this lesson, Inna! Fun fact: if you turn on the automatic subtitles, YT identifies Ukrainian swearing as... music. And that's what it sounds like, at least for a Polish native speaker - melodic, poetic and slightly old fashioned, but very witty at the same time. Most of them have very similar equivalents in Polish, for example the one with the duck - in our case it's a goose for some reason (a niech to (cię) gęś kopnie). The other thing I found fascinating was the word "шляк" in "а най би тебе шляк трафив". We have an exact same saying ("bodaj by cię szlag trafił!"), were "szlag" comes from the German verb "schlagen" (to hit) and as a noun it means simply "a lightning". So, it's an Ukrainian swear word, probably imported from Germany via Poland. :) Pozdrowienia z Krakowa!

When my Ukrainian father was really mad at someone he said Shlak bu trafit tebe! He said it was a curse for lightening to strike you down. It always meant a terrible curse to him as at least one of his family members was struck by lightening. Sometimes he just said Shlak! Was enough to know he was mad and stay away.......

This is a borrowing from German Schlag (heavy blow), via Polish szlag, as in 'A niech to / Niech cię szlag trafi!'

Привіт Інна! Ваші уроки чудові! Вони допомагають мені з уроками. (Дуолінґо уроки). У моєму класі троє українців. Я з Польщі і останнім часом з нами багато Украінців. (sorry for any mistakes, I'm learning Ukrainian, the rest of the comment will be in English) So one Ukrainian girl can speak English but the 2 other Ukrainians can't speak English so I started learning Ukrainian and in September I can speak to them in their native language. (I can't in this school year, because I had Leukemia 2 years ago and I could not go to school, I will go to school in 8th grade) I think that would be really nice to help them in such a horrible situation

Pryvit! I am a senior citizen in Canada. Fluent in Ukrainian but my Mama, God Bless her, never swore if you can believe it. At least not while her children were around. This was very informative for me. My Dido often used the katchka or the shliak one but that was it. Never too old to learn, LOL! Great lessons.

This is always an interesting and important topic so glad to learn about it in Ukrainian! Coincidentally, Dutch has the phrase 'krijg de klere' (креіх ды клиры or /krɛiχ də klɪrə/ in IPA) which is pretty much identical to 'А най би тебе холєра побрала'. Дякую, Інно!

Thumbs up as I generally appreciate your lectures, Inna. This time it was a bit harder, as I´m surrounded by people who curse a lot in real life. Sometimes it even gets to a ridiculous level. I´ll watch it again when I know the basics as I´m a beginner. Keep up your good work, you are an inspiration for many people in "the West" to start learning Ukrainian. Oh Inna, this brings back good old memories of my Ukrainian Giga who used to swear at us when we would climb the wood pile at the farm when we were kids! I can clearly hear him saying the swear that is used as a curse that expresses bad wishes to someone! Lol. Dobra video!!!!👍 You are the BEST 💕

Лекція яка всім була потрібна, але ніхто не смів просити 😂 До речі, багато виразів звучит майже ідентично в польський мові, на приклад "дулю тобі з маком" (figa z makiem), "а щоб тебе качкка копнула" (a niech cię kaczka kopnie) та "як не срачка то болячка" (jak nie urok to sraczka). Дякую за цікаву лекцію)))

As Being Ukrainian English Canadian this made my day. I really want to connect with my Ukrainian culture and language more since my mother and grandmother/ grandfather never wanted to teach me Ukrainian since I was born and grew up in Canada. Swear word are always something that my family teaches me to say to people who didn't understand Ukrainian to have a good laugh but never thought me the big picture other then hello, thanks, bless you, your welcome and I love you.

This is really good, thanks a lot. Because it give us a really deep part of our human expressions. Thank you also for writing them in your language because is more easy to me to read them and have the right expression of the letters. I´ve been really in to it studying the Cirilic alphabet and it has help me a lot in my reading of the language. A really big hug from Chile.

The sign of the fig was displayed on Italian towers of rival towns in the dark ages. It’s the old middle finger. Fun fact. I enjoyed this video. When I started learning I found “may you be kicked by a duck” was a curse. Apparently because it causes insanity or bad luck. And in Poland it is a goose from my research. It isn’t easy finding Ukrainian swearing when they are weird like that. It took an epoch to find out why chainik is a useless person. It’s like jughead in English which comes from old jugs having long handles like donkey ears.

In Russian, a chainik is a total beginner in something, i.e. having no knowledge in whatever the specific subject under discussion is and I suspect it's the same thing in Ukrainian rather than just somebody totally useless as such. As an example, the book series "xxxxx for Dummies" is entitled in Russian as "xxxxx for chainiks".

Yay! I'm not sure how many voted for you to do this oh, when you asked about it in one of your videos. But I'm one that for sure voted for it. It was so funny to see how difficult it was for you to make the video. Even the flag got into the Act. 😁😅😂For the Ukrainian phrase, "Як не срачка, то болячка": in the US comma we normally just say, "If it's not one thing, it's the other!" Or husbands will say to their wives: "If it's not one thing, it's your mother." Слава Україні НЕТ ВОЙНЕ
