Totally agreed! The thing is that Viola's sound is just so mellow and heavenly. It's a very hard instrument to play because it's heavier and bigger than violin but still it's held on the shoulder. The clef is different which can be difficult as well. The bow pressure, the size and all these on your shoulder to make that beautiful sound out of this instrument! These jokes are getting lame as more people get to know the deep and rich sound of Viola!

My favorite A symphony orchestra was on tour and the maestro got a 24-hour bug. The personnel manager asked who in the orchestra had conducted the repertoire before, and the last stand violist had. So he conducted that night, and it went really well. Before the next performance his stand partner turned to him and said: “Hey, where were you last night?”

I enjoyed this. I totally agree that the so-called jokes that just put violists down are simply bullying. Also, when a joke is repeated too often, it just starts sounding stupid instead of funny. I've actually heard some of these jokes with different instruments as the butt. (ex: how do you get two piccolos to play in tune?) Overall, I rank this video S tier. 👍

I love the genie one. Mine goes like this... 2 viola players look over some new sheet music. One asks the other, "Did we get any melody this time?" "No, Do we look like violinists?" "That depends on where we play".

Why are violas bigger than violins? They're not really, it is just that violinists have bigger heads.

Re the idea that violinists will automatically be good violist, Ray Chen and Amihai had a video a few years ago, where Amihai talked about the different muscles used, and the different approach needed. Quite interesting.

I've a bad memory. I know I watched that video of Ray and Amihai but I don't remember that joke. I also remember Amihai told Ray a viola joke in their most recent video and it's not one of the ones you've graded but I don't remember what it was.

This channel actually changed my opinion on violas I used to despise them now I recognize it’s value. But even if you didn’t change my opinion I can’t talk I play a bass unless it’s jaws, I could stop playing and nobody would notice.

In school, everyone who says those bad viola jokes are all worse than me and have a set of 4 jokes that they keep repeating. Its also mostly violin players.

I love the sound of the Viola and the composers need to quit sleeping on this beautiful instrument and start writing more work for it.

The joke "What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians?" is actually pretty creative, as it implies that every instrument makes a recognizable sound that sounds like music, or more accurately, a melody. The viola on the other hand is not easily recognizable unless you have something bigger than a 16.5+ inch. On top of that, its specialty is not in creating melodies. Its specialty is on supporting melodies and bridging the hi and the low. Take the violins out of an orchestra, and the melody will be missing. Take the violas out of the orchestra and every instrument will sound like a solo instrument, all competing for the top spot. One of the musicians top bragging rights is they brag about the melodies they create. Yet a violist would never brag about its capacity to not only "bridge the orchestra" but "bridge people" as well. Here is a joke/fact.- Why do people want to hang out with violists? Because there is no competition. And true, one of the musicians greatest dreads, is the competition itself, the comparison with others. For them, it is a relief to hang around with violists, precisely because they can chill. They already know that the violist will not take their job, simply because it is not their job. See, the violist jokes are essentially musicians making fun out of an instrument that whose role is not to shine (in the sense that it does not carry the melody), but rather, to support. See, how can you take offense at these jokes, when your role is totally different?

Great video! I half expected the Twoset one to be on there, the one that cracked them up so bad in their jokes video a long time ago--What did one violist say to the other? We're s***! So many of these jokes could be reworked to be about any instrument. Like, how do you improve the aerodynamics of a trombone player's car? Take the Domino's sign off the top. ;)
