Stop trying to control your students, give them choices

Classroom management is about offering students choices, not about forcing them to do what you want.
If it becomes a battle of wills, it will sap your strength and make teaching a nightmare.
Instead give students options so that they choose what they want to do.
Either they do the work which is great, or they misbehave and get punished.
It is not a situation of you versus them. You only enforce the rules, they decide what they want to do.

I had most students decline to participate in the assignment and instead they took the option of telling me to piss off, threw a party in the classroom, and then complained that I had not told them the instructions when I read the one sentence instructions which were on the projector and typed for them at the top of the page. I also prepared step-by-step slides explaining in detail how to complete the rather simple and straightforward assignment. School should be an option. If they don’t want to participate in the classroom, let them work unskilled labor in a factory or other outdoor space, cleaning up the roadway or such, so they can se the option of not learning in school.

Yep, today I asked a student if he wanted to speak on front of the class like the rest did for an activity. He refused. I said, "ok, I can't force you to do anything you don't want" and left it at that. It's his choice, but it will come out of his participation grade.

Yeah... because it's our job to raise them, not their parents. A student who THINKS they have some kind of choice in what they will and won't do at school has parents who have made them think that. When I was going to school I had to do whatever work my teachers put in front of me! Whether or not I "liked" the work. It wasn't about my feelings, it was about my education. And through that I learned that life isn't always a bed of roses and sometimes you have to do something because it must be done and it will benefit you (and/or others) in the long run. If my parents found out I refused to do perfectly reasonable school work, they'd be repercussions for me! But that's not how it is anymore. I've had to use that choice tactic before, but we shouldn't have to and it doesn't always work. Especially with kids who's parents act like their child is an angel. My teachers never needed to use such methods on me. But I was born in the 1900s...

True. So what do you do? What "choice" would one give him?
@knowtheworld39

What I normally do is to start seeing the good side of him and make him feel that I have faith in him and that he can be better than that, citing some examples of great things he did in the past few days or weeks, some appreciation stuff. If it doesn't work, I then lay down consequences as reminders which I tell him I don't want to impose as long he is not gonna force my hand to do so. If it still doesn't work, I show him how serious I am in imposing the rules that I established, that I just don't bluff, that I will not bend them. I do it by jotting down a lesser mark or a zero on participation or classwork which I physically show, and even ask him if he really wants it. Then write a report for parents to know, I also show this to him and make him feel the gravity of his action.@@roberttippett3733

I will say it’s archived when kids fear but respect a teacher, feel respected by & like the teacher (most of the time) I once worked with a brand new, first year Teacher (she was in Teach for America) in a very inner NYC school. She was one of the best I ever saw & Right off she had management of the room & was better at it than people w years experience.

I think that's not quite the point of the video. It's about tasks during the teaching process. He does say, that you should enforce the rules. Option a would be to change the seat, option b would be another consequence. If they choose option b you have to have a consequence in hand (They are choosing the consequence when choosing an option and it should be clear to them)

This is a terrible way of looking at students, they are not just at school to learn but to also make their mistakes in a safe environment. It’s the responsibility of teachers to help students get on the right path and learn from these mistakes. Ignoring students who are unmotivated will only serve to demotivate them more in the future and I fear that with teachers treating them as such it will only further send them down the wrong path. I’m a student so I know my opinion means nothing, but when I struggled in my classes it was because my teachers didn’t want to teach me. That is mostly conjecture but I feel this way because not a single one even attempted to talk to me, had they did they would know I failed because I wasn’t a participant in my learning, I had many of complaints about how they taught, if one would have attempted to prompted me to speak up for my self I would have been able to fix the issue much sooner. It doesn’t mean teachers should spend everyday priding at me to do their work sheets but rather they should have just attempted to talk to all students who struggled and come to understand them. If students don’t have anyone who wants to help them then how can they fix there problems with the lessons or class work. This not necessarily true of all unmotivated students but getting treated like this by teachers encouaged my suicidal tendencies. When I was finally able to work things out for myself I didn’t have the ability to fix my grades treatment by the teachers. All I could ask of teachers is to talk to students so that when their able to fix there problems they have a platform to fix their grades and knowledge.

As a student, your opinion definitely matters. Im a teacher. I do believe that sometimes we need a little pushing outside of ourselves because we dont quite have the volition to do it ourselves. No, we cant force student's, but i believe students do need pushing or nudging to do things.

Kindly briefly define what should be my behavior with each individual student in a way they shouldnt talk the next time. @etacude
@etacude 9 месяцев назад
Hi! Thank you for your question. You are a good leader for asking for help. I understand it's a difficult situation. You are under pressure to keep them organized. Your best strategy is to talk to them and explain the reason why they have to behave. Rather befriend them. You are not a teacher so you don't have to feel like it's your job. Be friendly with them and ask them to behave. If they continue, ask to speak to one or 2 of them after assembly. Don't talk to all of them at once, because it can be difficult. In stead, talk to 1 or 2 privately and ask them to cooperate with you. They should be examples for the other classes. They can talk during break, but in assembly, it's you and their duty to be good students.

If you make rules, you give the student a choice. Either he can participate in the lesson and do the work, or he can argue and ignore you and get punished. It's his choice. You see, right now you feel like you have to push him to do work. It's you versus him. That's the wrong way of thinking about it. Stop arguing and fighting. Tell him the rules, the he can choose to join the class and cooperate, or he gets left out. It's not you versus him. It's him versus himself. If he argued, tell him to talk about it after class. Whatever punishment there is he gets it because of his choice.
