Thank you so much for this video. It’s like you read my mind. I’ve put a side teaching for a while and started taking classes again to stay up to date in my field since I was under a lot of stress having too much groups to teach and somehow I was feeling I was just not enjoying teaching anymore, and I even thought I had chosen the incorrect career, but now that I’m not teaching I miss it and think I just needed to feel more confident, less work and have clear objectives in my lessons, it was just too much work in a journey. Teachers here in Mexico don’t get well paid in private schools, so I ended working giving private lessons instead, and this also helped me a lot to reduce stress. Thank you very much for your tips!

I'm actually so happy to hear that you are pushing yourself so hard to be a good teacher. Just remember, give yourself permission to make mistakes. You've got this idea that you have to be perfect, when in fact none of us are. So the next time you don't know the answer to a question, just tell the students: "Sorry, I'm not sure what the answer is. Let me look it up later and I'll get back to you tomorrow." Be okay with not being perfect :)

I once had to sit in on a class to get to know how the school works and the teacher only had two months experience. She had troubles getting the students to participate like she wanted them to, so after class, I explained a method that has always worked for me. I had a set of Greek alphabet cards and I would assign the students a Greek letter (alpha, beta, gamma, etc.). I then pulled a card from my pocket and then called on the student. Then I set it aside and pulled the next card. That way, participation is not a big problem and teachers don't play favorites. I explained this much like you are explaining your methods and she thanked me for my advice. She then reported me for harassment.

@@etacude Hey Eric, I'd loove if you could talk about where you were in the beggining aka what it was like for you when you began teaching; your obstacles and how you overcame them. I have quite the plethora of horrible experiences 😂🤣. Anyways, another topic I'd love to learn about is an example of your lesson planning, if possible. How do you take learners through the lesson (warmers, presentation, production etc). For example a lesson in Eng Lit. I really feel overwhelmed about lesson planning and sometimes I will take a weekend just to plan one short lesson. 🙈 Thanks so much Xx

There have been a few people asking about lesson planning so I'll definitely do a BIG video on it probably by February. I look forward to sharing some ideas that might help because I know how it feels when we struggle in class. Would you choose one type of consequence, or a few types depending on number or severity of infractions... Thank you !
@etacude

What a great questions Elena. So far I feel like I might have been avoiding it too, so now is a good time to look at it. ;) You see, in the past I referred to most school's have some kind of policy when it comes to student punishment, but I believe that every teacher should have classroom rules and punishments for when those rules have been broken. There's a lot I can say about punishment so I might make a video about it in the future. But remember that we don't want to make a punishment a big deal. We will warn students, and then if they transgress the first time we might ask to see them after class. The next step would be some kind of written warning. The fact is that they have to know that there are consequences. Do not make it personal! Try and get them to admit that they broke the rule in private. Ask them what the rule is. Don't blame them. Then they might write an apology or get detention. If it continues you have to speak to head teacher and perhaps call their parents for a meeting. But ---- When you are teaching in a place like a language academy where you don't have much power. Go warning - Talk after class - Written apology - Meeting after school. Try not to argue or punish in front of the class. There is still a lot more I should say about this. Let me do some research and think about it then perhaps do a video. Thank you for the question Elena ^^
@galgab
@galgab 3 года назад
@@etacude Thank you so much for the answer Eric, I've learnt something new, because I hadn't considered the option of talking to them in private after class. I think it makes the relationship teacher student deeper and also shows respect towards that student, who hopefully will start to change. Will try :)

It's true Eric. A confident teacher would have a positive impact on his or her students' achievement, attitude, affective and even socio-emotional growth. Thus, a confident teacher makes a big difference in the life of the students who will be confident too eventually.

Definitely Ruperto! We usually only gain confidence as we get experience in the classroom. Hopefully some of these ideas can new teachers feel more confident in their classes.

Thank you for this video and your other videos, I have been watching them for a few hours now. They're very helpful. I've just started teaching at a language school, and it's been challenging as the school I teach at doesn't have a disciple plan. We were told explicitly that should a student act out we need to ignore their behaviour and push through for fear that the students will drop out of the school due to 'discipline' and the school will lose money 💸- we are not allowed to challenge students behaviour, they're free to be🙄.I have a class that has become unmanageable and I've spoken to the school principal. He's aware of the students behaviour but has reminded me that I need to push through 😏. This video has shown me that I have put the right foot forward, sometimes circumstances dictate differently.

Hi Eric thanks for ur valuable tips. I've started part-time teaching for a sem in tw. I'm a dusk skin person. I've faced some discrimination from the students' parents many times. that kinda resonates with my kids too. I've seen my class kids behavior in other classes. they indeed behave well. I love teaching. however, I feel so discouraged many times recently and these attitudes hurt me a lot and mentally impact me. I've tried so many techniques yet students not paying attention and being quite rude. pls give me some tips to manage the class and my mind. I started to questioning should i change the professon

Every teacher has had those feelings. There are some tough classes with difficult students and you got thrown into the deep end. Just remember that it will get easier. - Or rather, you will become stronger. On this channel I try to share some ideas and techniques that may help, but ultimately you have to become stronger to deal with the problems students give you. Here are 2 of my videos I would like to suggest if you haven't watched them yet: First Day of Class - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-elsMvsGoBsE.html Classroom Rules ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u_XktSMKaNM.html I hope these help and good luck with your classes. Whether you quit or not is up to you, just know that you have the support and understanding of millions of teachers that have been where you were before.

I teach adult ESL classes (Literacy and spoken English) and the hours are 930 am until 3pm. That is a really long day. I plan lessons with activities, videos etc based on a topic. I often feel i have not got the perfect timing to stretch the lesson over those hours. Do you have tips for this kind of lengthy duration of teaching ESL?

This channel is a goldmine. Thanks for the useful advice. I have a question: what do you do with aggressive student or students who get up and leave in a fit? I never lost my temper and I’m stoic in my approach. I teach refugee students and they can sometimes really snap out of the blue because of ptsd and traumatic past experiences.
