To those of you who read the description: You are an excellent subscriber! :)
The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

A long standing legend claims that Russian Tsar Nicholas II, who had partially funded the tournament, formally conferred the title 'Grandmaster' to the five finalists: Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Tarrasch and Marshall. Chess historian Edward Winter has questioned this, stating that the earliest known sources that support this story are an article by Robert Lewis Taylor in the June 15, 1940, issue of The New Yorker, and Marshall's autobiography 'My 50 Years of Chess' (1942).

I have a real soft spot for Lasker. Might have something to do with his Manual of Chess which I have had since I was a kid. I read somewhere that if you study Lasker's games you don't get a lot of brilliancies and stunning combos. What you get instead is the spirit of the chess fighter. Following his method will make you a very difficult opponent to beat.

19:28 -- Capablanca doesn't have a forced win that I can see, but, if he had played only a few moves further, he could have arrived a few situations in which Lasker is reduced to a single response to avoid eventual checkmate, and they begin with Ng3, (Lasker: any rook move on 6th rank), Nh5. --Capablanca is thus threatening to exchange his knight for the black pawn. (Lasker: as before, any rook move on 6th rank), NxP, KxN, f6+, Kg6 (only viable move for a draw), f7, RxB+ (only viable move for a draw). After Nh5, Lasker could push g6 instead, but these also lead to blunder opportunities. Essentially, after fifty moves of general screwing around, Capablaca only needed to screw around for two more moves to see if Lasker would have either his rook or king in the wrong position.
@Krmpfpks
@Krmpfpks 5 лет назад
Did anyone enter the position in the 7-men tablebase? This should be solved perfectly, no super computer required.
@honourabledoctoredwinmoria3126
I did. It's a straight draw from the moment there are 7 men, and Lasker played the correct drawing moves.
@honourabledoctoredwinmoria3126
But could there have been a more favorable way the position could have been simplified since the start of the endgame? I don't know.

@@MrHari232 haha nah i agree though with todays knowledge capa would most likely give carlsen a run for his money but i think even more so fischer because his dedication to chess was impressive and some might even say insane. still though i think carlsen might come out victorious considering the way he has stayed number 1 for so long in this era where all the other top player also have engine analysis which makes everyone at the top nowadays extremely strong. that pretty much speaks for itself.
@MrHari232
@MrHari232 5 лет назад
@@arnoldo8642 I wouldn't like to make a discussion out of this because everyone has a different point of view. Nevertheless, you avoid the fact that if Fischer, Capa, Lasker would have been active in this era with all the engines and knowledge that is present, and again not to forget the prices in chess today as a motivation to be the best, to include and combine their capabilities with nowadays possibilites, Carlsen is not somebody who would really make the difference compared to them, when we look at it objectively.
@manu-ox4fe
@manu-ox4fe 5 лет назад
At his prime any of this players could give Carlsen a run for his money . The only requirement would be to up date their game. Unfortunaly as long as I know only two extrardinary players had faced each other in their prime for the championship title. Karpov and Kasparov. The rest has been Champions past their prime against younger opponents. Probably Capa and Alexander Alekhine were both in their prime.

No, he doesn't Anand is arguably the most unimpressive champion since the title was created. A saga about him would be very boring. What's his highest achievement? Even the matter in which he won the title (not beating the champ, even though he would beat him the year after) is a detriment to his legacy. I think folks that appreciate Anand as a WC are either nationalist Indians or folks who don't understand chess. Vishy is a very very strong grandmaster, don't get me wrong, but he is no impressive champion by any means. Anand's biggest advantage was his advanced preparation abilities, using very - at the time- advanced computers and computer training abilities. He gets clobbered when you catch him out of book and that is the general strategy of his opponents: get him out of book. When he was young, this was hard as his memory was sharp. Now though, it's still difficult but a little bit easier.

FWIW, the final position of this game is a tablebase draw. One easy and quick way to show this is as follows: 1. Go to the online tablebase site syzygy-tables.info 2. Make sure that "White to move" is selected. 3. Enter the FEN position "6k1/6p1/1r1BK3/5P2/4N3/8/8/8" in the text box below the board. 4. Click "Set FEN". The evaluation will appear on the right. I'll leave the initial endgame position as an exercise for the reader, as no tablebases exist for that many pieces. :)

Hey Agad, thanks for the shout out! Love your channel. Do you have any recommendations for good books for beginners? So many out there, don't want to waste my time with bad or extremely outdated ones. Thank you!

The Question i am now asking myself is ... could Capablanca mate with a Knife and Bishop?

But how broken are rooks? Lasker and his rook held the positions like a beast

Ran it a bit in Stockfish 10. It said white had a slight advantage at the beginning of the endgame but eventually it was a draw.

How about Rb8 check, after rook captures on b2. You have to block, if blocked with the knight, you win the knight. And if blocked with bishop you win the rook on b2

Honestly, this endgame is so far over my head it might as well be in space. I'd have offered a draw 50 moves before the end, as either side!

This game reminds me of an end game of stockfish vs alphazero, not a specific game, just the methodical repetition of positions in the endgame.

@agadmator for Syzygy endgame tablebases, after 75.Nxg5+ it's a draw.

At about the 11 minute mark, I think white should have played his knight to e6 and bishop to f8.

Nazi were major cock jugglers but you can't ignore someone's genius just because they were nazi themselves, Fischer was a mysogynist, should we ignore his genius too?
@capsore

you need to expand your ideas a little. do not ignore the fact that, that nazi improved chess, added something to this world rather than destroying it. we should always get the good things from anything.
