Amen, sis! There are so many other ways to run an efficient/prepared kitchen by learning to use what you have to the full. I hadn't intended on making this video, but as a regular YT viewer, I couldn't find this type of video, and felt the nudging to make it. Many of us aren't oblivious to whats happening, but let's stress the importance of food preservation, zero waste cooking, and how you can still eat well with a little improvisation, cooking with scraps and thankfulness for what you already have. Blessings on your week, sweet friend!

There are some content creators who have strayed away from their regular content and just posting Doomsday videos daily. I’m the first person to say stock up, grow what you can, preserve what you can…. However, the daily panicky content gives me so much anxiety that I can’t watch. I appreciate you. THANK YOU, love this approach. Too many people panicking out there about food "shortages" and not understanding that the real problem for those of us in the U.S. is going to be learning to cook and shop in a very strategic, budget-friendly way. There's a misunderstanding of the problem and people are jumping to the wrong solution. Thanks for all these practical resources.

My local grocery store discounts meat, eggs, dairy and produce when it gets close to its Best Buy date. I love stocking up and freezing or canning those items to save even more. I am also a huge fan of reusable items. I just got several reusable canning lids for my birthday! Now I don’t have to worry about shortages on metal lids. Thank you for sharing your tips Cassandra :)
@ajb.822
@ajb.822 Год назад
You'll have to let us know how you like them ! ( the reusable canning lids). When I was deciding to buy some lids in bulk to save and stock up, last year, I looked into them but wasn't sure.. they had a lot of reviewers saying they had more fails with them sealing, than normal. I don't recall for sure if that was incl. the 1st time they used them, but I think so. That plus the fact ( according to the item description) that they only last for a handful of times canning with them, I decided to instead just buy a big bulk bunch of the regular kind. I got them from a company called Fennimores or something like that. I have had no issue with their genaric lids and rings until this year, when I ran into an issue getting several of the wide mouth rings to start threading onto a batch of wide mouth pint Kerr jars (which were also slightly taller than normal, got em at a thrift sale, wonder if it was that batch of jars... ? But, my older rings which are mostly probably Kerr brand, screwed on). A lot of my old rings are awfully rusty (probly from back before I knew to always rake them off the jars b4 storing 😁😕, so, I'd broken out a new batch of the no-names ). Anyways, buying a batch if like 90 lids at once, of generic esp. , saved a LOT per lid. Unlike the ones on Amazon, these ones seemed to be made in the US, too. The generic on Amazon are made in China and have a LOT of bad reviews/failures.

I am in the UK so decided to invest in the reusable ones as the ball lids are nearly 7 dollars for a pack of 12. The plastic lids can last a long time it is the rubber ring which lasts about 10 times. I find that there really is no difference in seal fails once you get used to the difference also just make the head space slightly bigger, it really helps

I am so happy to find someone with similar philosophy on food! I broke my leg this year and couldn’t work. I canned everything from my garden and from the farm where I buy seasonal produce and mystery boxes. Then I taught myself to pressure can. That’s how I found you; searching for ideas on how to use my canned food. I made a wonderful black bean salad by mixing home canned beans and homegrown and canned peach salsa! I was reading a recipe and realized everything I needed was in these two jars I had on the shelf! I want complete control over the source and ingredients in my food. I also found that shopping at Mexican grocers and small independent grocers can provide meats and produce at better prices and quality. I just got whole chickens for 99 cents a pound in 2022! I bought 3 cut them up canned a bunch and froze the trimmings and bones for the next stock day. To see such a young vibrant woman practicing and passing on these amazing old style home ec skills makes me very happy. You also encourage me bc sometimes I feel very alone in my desire to live this way and seeing someone 20 years younger doing these things it’s a blessing. Your new subscriber from Wisconsin.

I HAD to come on here and tell you that this is one the best videos I've seen someone do in a long time. You are keeping it simple and showing practical ways for people to be better stewards of their space, food and time. I LOVE it. While I have a large piece of property where we grow a lot of food, I use all of these tips. The biggest one is that I'm trying to be more zero waste in the kitchen. Teaching that one tip to home cooks is priceless. I make the best stocks for soup and cooking out of scraps. Any time I have chicken bones and scrap veggies, I save them to make stock. Canning it or freezing it (what I used to do before I learned how to pressure can) saves so much money and is so healthy. I just bought 3 roasts to cut up for stews and had almost 2 pounds of scraps left over. I'm learning to make broth and then fat to cook with from it. ZERO waste, 100% taste! You inspired me to go buy some (gently used) scrap cooking books to up my game. Thank you!

Man! I'm so happy that 6 months ago I decided to take advantage of all the meat sales due to hearing about future price hikes. We even bought a pressure canner, an extra deep freezer (second hand) and a food saver. We spent most of the summer finding sales and vacuum packing meal sized portions. We canned and froze whatever our small garden produced. Now our shelves and freezers are brimming with food that I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for. We are using the no food wasted method as well.... we've often used it previously because my father was a great depression child and so kind of taught me some things, oh and early in my marriage I bought the 2 "Penny Pincher" books by Amy Dacysyn (or however you spell her name lol).

Thank you for your video. It wasn't that long ago we stashed $100 for when butter went on sale for $3lb. Those days are long over. Butter here in Canaduh is $7 plus a pound regular price so when it went on sale for $4.50lb I went right away to the store(s) to get some before it was sold out. The first store had limited product with a ten pound "limit" per "household". This is new eh? It used to be "per customer". Me and Mum could get 20 lb that way and they all know that Me and Mum are in one household because she's been hanging off my arm for years because of her "All The Timers". I'm her full time caregiver and it shames me that I'm all she has but that's my reality. Now in the big city I'd lie and tell them we are two households. I'd lie for butter but that doesn't work around here where everyone knows everyone's business. I can't fart but they all wipe their bum, ... Oh well, gives them something to talk about I'm sure. Besides, I'm not into lying because the truth stands on its own, whereas a lie requires the constant expenditure of my time and energy to exist and I'm too lazy to be maintaining lies. .... except for butter, I'd lie for butter. True story. In the big towns I just make multiple visits until I have the amount I want and call it done. No lying needed. I was going to go to the Grain Elevator for a half ton of whole Wheat and 500 lbs of Oats but the truck got snowed in and I'm not paying to have it blown out. Snow melts for free given time. Prepping is not the answer. But it's going to help for sure. Our dilemma? We can only deny our redemption, our salvation. You see, the paradigm shift from the childish win/lose mentality to a mature and wise Win/Win, and the model change from "for profit", to "not for profit", only expose us as "corrupted" and only losers are corrupted, therefore we can not accept such an unacceptable truth and we deny our Soul-U-Shun. This is also too simple a solution. People would only believe that they are being played for suckers if it was a diabolically genius "con game" being played and not meaningless and childish games of win/lose and the lies and corruption of "eternal growth and profit" here where nothing grows forever and profit is the lie. We lived in a world of abundance not profit. Profit is the concept used to concentrate the abundance of the world into the hands and control of the few, the elite, the entitled, and those great winners in a perverted world of win/lose. "Profit" requires the constant expenditure of your precious time, energy, and belief to exist. Right Santa? The hoarded abundance of the world is then used to control and direct a population of brainwashed for profit" economic slaves who only understand, worship, and practice the self inflicted retardation of "win/lose" to structure their every affair as civilized, sane, wise, and honorable. There's a voice within us all that speaks to us when we want to hear it. Or allow it credence, that is. People who have not "heard" or refuse to see the obvious failure of humanity are destined for the non-viable. This is natural and organic. Kinda a human fail safe. Anyway, there is so much more to the Ways of the Win/Win. I can't get into it all now. So I'll leave you with a taste of "The Economics of Time". A community owned "not for profit" worth and value of our time and energy based in "time" alone, backed by the abundance, and built on a foundation of truth and reality. Just a teaser eh? OK, I've trained myself to pay attention to what grabs my attention and I found myself interested in you. Forgive me please but there must be something or I wouldn't bother trying. I plant the seeds of Win/Win in the dismal and depleted soil of the win/lose because I know that failed human filth makes the greatest fertilizer. Just don't be great fertilizer eh? The seeds of Win/Win are given freely and unconditionally. Do with them what you will. That alone makes the seeds and myself "suspect" in the minds of the corrupted, and I laugh and laugh. May the abundance of the world always be manifest in your life. And good luck.

Cassandra, as always your content is on point and very well delivered! Many of the suggestions you made I've been doing. You gave me food for thought using the disposable storage items. I appreciate all you do. Again, thanks for sharing and look forward to seeing what's new with you soon!

Thank you! Love your content. I definitely need to learn to use more scraps. I've just always thrown them away but you're right, I can save more by being less wasteful than going out and buying more food.

Every time I watch one of your videos I get inspired . Not the kind of inspired where you say to yourself "I should try that" while watching it but then forget about it later - I mean actually inspired and taking action. I already started started making some home remedies like the fire cider, and elderberry syrup after watching your home apothecary video and after this video, I'm going to need a lot more space in my freezer lol. I live alone so it's less satisfying to just cook for me but I guess I need to take care of myself too :) and I'll know how to do all this once I actually do have someone to cook for :). Anyway, thanks for brightening up my days with a new hobby and with your lovely/down to earth personality. I love that you don't try to put up a fake image of perfection and that you share your life hacks for when you're lazy/busy. Honestly, it makes you more relatable, thus more helpful, and inspirational. You make me feel like maybe, if I work at it, I can do it too. Anyway, this turned out to be a bit of a letter huh lol. Bottom line - I appreciate what you do and based on other comments I'm simply one of many. Thanks!

So happy I came across your channel! I've always approached my home this way (learned from my grandmother) waste not want not. Cooking from scratch, repurposing everything. LOVE IT! Thank you for making me feel normal 🥰

Yes yes yes! Thank you for the VERY timely video! And for already answering questions I had about your freezers! I would LOVE either a written schedule of how often you’re doing various batches or maybe even videos of some of your seasonal tasks? I feel like I get thrown off of my timing for a lot of different tasks to make sure that I get the most out of my produce, either purchased or home grown. Or… maybe a glance at how you keep track of your inventory? You’re the best! Thank you for such inspiring videos.

I always learn so much from you! Just a few months ago, I started saving my vegetable scraps to make broth. I learned a lot about not wasting food, when I worked with a French chef many years ago! But I just got busy, and now am back into canning and preserving and eating healthier! You can save a lot of money by shopping sales and buying wholesome ingredients! I try to stay away from prepackaged and frozen meals with all the preservatives and they usually cost more anyway!

I am enjoying your channel. I just about went broke last summer trying to stock up on grocery items. I finally realized those women who could do that had extra money to accomplish this feat. Meg, on Holler Homstead, mentioned that she didn't try to stock up. She ran a frugal kitchen. My mom ran a frugal kitchen, so do you. That makes much more sense than having a grocery store in the basement.

Just found your channel and this is the first segment I have watched. Very refreshing. Being raised by depression era parent who grew up with very little, I innately learned many of the tips you suggested. I plant to go back and watch older segments and future ones. I base mush of what it taught as opposed to many channels who become to prepper hysteric. Those last very little time on my favorites. Looking forward to enjoying your channel in the future . Aww, Cathy you are too sweet! Truly! There is no denial that prices of almost everything are rising, but there is still plenty that can be done in an ordinary kitchen to make meals and money stretch in ways that benefit your wallet, health, taste buds and self-reliance over the long run. Learning the ways of a country kitchen equips you with valuable skills so that you can whether any storm (plus, its just good eatin'). Have a great week!

Great tips Cassandra! If your swiffer should ever kick the bucket, the OXO spray mop is pretty great. It has washable pads, and you can mix whatever cleaner you want to use in the spray bottle which would work great with your oils.

I just found your channel and LOVE this message! I unfortunately have had to unsubscribe or stop watching some of the other channels that have fell into “must panic everyone” mode all in what I believe is for views and likes to make money. I love how to videos that provide information for being prepared for what life has to throw at us. Living I’m S. Florida I have to prepare for hurricane season every year, so I have begun to incorporate my hurricane prep into preparing for life’s unexpected moments anytime of the year, therefore eliminating the panic mode that so many want us to be in.

The chicken feet part made me laugh… Our local Walmart market was selling them for a while. I never bought them, though, but I have heard they’re great for broth. I was glad to learn you can freeze eggs-thank you for that. This video was so motivating-thank you!

Gonna tell it like it is: you 100% surprised me and I am totally bummed out at the moment. Literally watched ONE video a few days and subscribed. Today I’m prepping all the parts of my carrot harvest for frozen, canned, dehydrated and fresh use so threw up youtube subscriptions to keep me company at the sink… and THIS one popped up first. 😩 Dang it girl you have SO much info that I had to pause it, finish what I am doing with another video, and then come BACK to rewatch … with a tea and pen in hand. ( Lesson learned. Always watch YOUR videos sitting down so I can take copious notes! ) See you again in a couple hours! 😂❤🤩
