STOP Watercolour Paper From Buckling When Wet

In today's lesson I talk about a few ways to stop watercolour paper from cockling, or buckling, I'll also paint an atmospheric sky with boats and reflections.
Cockling of the paper can be annoying for beginners, but there are ways around it. Stretching the paper is a traditional method, and is great for larger sheets, but can be frustrating, especially if you want to paint straight away.
For me, the best solution is watercolour blocks, they're gummed around the edges and ready to go when you need them.

Thank you! I used a block recently and had similar results - no buckling. This painting is just lovely in it's simplicity!

Thanks Rita. Blocks are great to use, although a little bit more expensive, they do make painting easier.

Hi Chris. Loving the videos and of course the paintings. If you don’t mind me asking do you cover and store your completed paintings with anything such as varnish or Glassine paper? I was only wondering as I just use the Glassine paper for storing mine, not that there much good but just for future reference.

Thanks Dave, I really appreciate you watching. I don’t do anything special with regard to storing my paintings, the “keepers” go into a large portfolio, so they’re ready to be shipped if they sell, I also frame some behind glass. The rest just go onto a pile in the corner of my studio / office. Failed paintings etc, I keep and occasionally cover them with gesso for oil painting, or experiment with gouache and acrylic straight over the top. I only use varnish for oil and acrylic work.

What is cockling

Cockling is when watercolour paper curls up and distorts when wet
