The RU-vid music database I discussed in this video back in early 2019 is now gone. It no longer exists. This means that there is no longer a way to see if your music will be allowed, meaning you can use the song but the creators of the song monetize your video VS using a song that the creator doesn't allow which means your video will not be able to be seen unless you remove the song. This means we are back to the old way of just having to put up a video music mix as unlisted and see what happens...before sending it to a published state.
Me (DJ interested in publishing sets on RU-vid): Discovering the Music Policies page through your video after uploading multiple unlisted "mini-mixes" to discover a publishable playlist... Eyes wide open! And then realising it's all gone... #$@!?@$% FFFFF*******
All in all its a nice tutorial video well explained. But in the end the headline is kind of clickbaiting. As there is nothing about how i can post my mix and its not getting taken down. Its about hot create a mix with music that YT allows me. But im not free in my creativity at all to use the music i like. So i cant post "my mix"
It has happened to me a lot and it demotivates one a lot especially after working so hard on making that mixtape amazing for fans to hear and also to promote this musician's song. Thanks for informing us what you know.
Another way of doing this is to make a test track using snippets of each song (10-20sec instead of full track), upload - unlisted > YT Creator Studio (open video) > visibility > view copyright claim status - see which are blocked, remove those tracks, maybe keep a list of blocked songs. Credit to DJ Carlo for this method and commentor Maryalee Scarlet for the tip of shortening the songs for the copyright test track.
snag with this is one day `RU-vid states a track is ok to use, & the next day they state otherwise & block them. i get this all the time and there's no way around it
I love how well you explain the small details, espically about having a block when u cannot achieve something, I think that’s true for most of us. Much Love 😘
Thanks for the information! This is why I don’t post any mixes on RU-vid anymore. Ain’t nobody got time for all that searching for what songs can play lol.
I feel you should be able to use any music as long as your not making money off the video ....they make music for ppl to hear and enjoy but as djs have to buy music from a music pool but cant use it to make a mix to promote urself as a dj ....the copywrite laws are old and need to be updated for 2020 and social media and content for use
Yeah, it's annoying. The clubs, bars and radio stations pay the ascap/bmi fees, why can't they figure out how to make the model work for RU-vid, IG and others, I don't know the inside details. I agree, things need to be updated for today's age, I feel your pain! Twitch is more lenient, check it out if you haven't already...
Awesome, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I will have to remember to keep my tone tame and not fall prey to the youtube happy voice, lol!!!
The database thing seems to work...most of the time. I have had mixes blocked on the basis of one track which I had already checked on that database. For the most part my stuff doesnt get blocked but thats because of the style of music I play, underground techno. If you are wanting to play more popular known tracks its maybe a bigger issue.
So you put a song on that was good to go -- and then after the fact the track that you used became considered a copyright strike? That stinks, I would like to think that is a rarity but at the same time things could happen between copyright owners to change the status of the music. Glad to hear you are making out ok for the most part! Thanks for watching!
@@BlakeHeart yep also the algorithms on mixcloud aren't always accurate. I put up two livesets using only samples and it wrongly id'd half my set as actual tracks.

Hi there.. I tried to search for the RU-vid music policy page but was unsuccessful . Can you please walk me through on how to get to this page in my RU-vid .. thanks
So it looks like it has officially gone away, the database no longer exists. This was in the works for a while, we knew it was going away, and this stinks. It was at least a way to know whether or not your video would be taken down or silenced. Without this resource, looks like the hard way of making a mix, putting the video up as a unlisted to see what happens, and then go from there is the best approach...which isn't ideal!
I've got 1 mix that is close to 1 million views and it has gotten me 7k followers , but I try to monetize on my page and I wasn't able to even though I qualify to and its mostly because my mixes are old school and all copywriter so I am finding ways to make my page more original , I love mixing for the world like yourself but on ig im always getting kicked off and posts get blocked so there has to be a way , nice does it on ig and he goes on for hours , how is that possible?
Some people have special situations where they are in with the folks at IG and paying any fees on the backend I suspect. Go to Twitch, that's really the place to be if you want to DJ BUT anything copywritten with performance rights will get silenced on the video reply. On the live DJ set on Twitch, nothing will get silenced and you will not get booted off...
What I’m considering doing is putting up mixes, putting the same mixes up on a podcast and on mixcloud... And then going to write an easy and comprehendible list underneath where they can see the links, and then going to write an easy and comprehendible list underneath where they can Click on the links to listen to the mix is if they can’t listen to them they’re
Well, as you probably know, you can post anything on Mixcloud -- but that's not going to work on RU-vid, I am not sure there's any easy way around the fact that you won't be able to use the same mix for both sites, unless each song is clear on RU-vid. Many years ago, I just accepted this is the way things are...for now. Maybe they will change at some point in the future -- but too many people have legal rights to these songs in so many countries, I think it is hard to companies to negotiate with some of the copyright owners.
There was two different options of the same De La Soul song and one said it was not allowed after you saw one that was allowed.. how do you go about that?
All of the policies have changed, I can't even keep up. Upload an unpublished video with the song and see what happens - then you will know if it will be allowed or not for real.
I'm in the market for something that's on your affiliate 'kickback' list but I want to buy from the UK Amazon store. Can you post an international link?
I appreciate you wanting to give me some affiliate love, the truth is I have been meaning to get my international links set up for the longest time and haven't....and I really need to get myself to do it! Don't wait around for me though, but again, I appreciate you wanting to support the channel, much love!!
Great video. I naively did an half hour live streaming with my favorite tracks (all in theminimal techno style) so my friends could enjoy it. I've been in home lockdown since mid March and bored (and broke) to death hahaha. The video remained in my page but muted... I use my iPad Pro and Djay app (it's pretty awesome) with tracks stored within the iPad and tracks from Spotify. Any way, a pretty frustrating experience. I guess I will just hope the covid-19 one day goes away and I can just play at friend's parties because that's all I mean, to make people enjoy it and dance. I guess I will organize my own stuff on Ableton Live and stream my own material, I guess that will not be a problem. Greetings from Brazil.
Ahhh, sorry! Definitely can be frustrating, and the day that youtube or some other popular platform solves for this will be the most amazing day! There must be some way they can do it and make sure everyone gets their money from the plays!! Thanks for watching, stay safe over there in Brazil! Here in the USA, we have the same covid craziness -- praying that a vaccine comes soon because I am not sure anything but that will bring back some sort of normalcy here!!!
So everyone will now be doing the same mixes? I don't understand it your viewers watch your mix hear a good song they can then go and download which =free advertising for the artist
Fine, if you don't mind your work being used without your permission and without payment. Artists that feel that way about all or some of their music in this context can make it available for such use, just as this video tells us about. Otherwise, everything becomes "advertising for the artist", and the artist ends up with a steadily diluted income stream.
Hillo there @Blakeheart, could you possibly make an updated version of this wonderful video. It’s quite challenging trying to keep up with you when nothing looks the saw. Cheers. 😅
Yeah, this is an older video and RU-vid is constantly changing things, glad you found what you needed! Thanks for watching and for the comment - maybe I can make an updated one at some point, it's been quite a popular video of mine!
im just starting a youtube channel doing bass covers and lessons, what if i bought the karaoke version and downloaded it without the bass line and used this, would that bypass the copywright laws???
Interesting question! I don’t think this is a problem since it’s similar to teaching people how to play an entire song on guitar for example, you are just using some instrumental help - which is not music made by the original artists - to be able to show how to play bass...
@@BlakeHeart Karaoke versions also get blipped sometimes because they're a "cover" and covers still need proper lisencing to go ahead and play if they have enough likeness to the song itself and not another redition of it. Instumentals are still music made by the original artist even if it's played by someone else. Just keep that in mind!
Hey Blake, amazing video! I wasted my entire afternoon trying to upload a mashup here and on Soundcloud and as you said, no success because of the copyrights. Where can I find the section with the copyright on the new version on youtube, I have looked up almost everywhere but I didn't find it, it would be super helpful, thanks again!!!!
The link was in the description, just checked it and it appears to still work - ru-vid.com_policies?o=U&nv=1 Sorry to hear you had your mash up taken down, it's tough to beat the algorithms these days!! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment -- good luck to you and getting your music remixes out there!!
thank you for this info :) I will use this database. but I have one question - what if I can't find track in this database, for example this is quite new song, track or remix?
I hear you, anything can change at any time, for sure....if you don’t have copyright interest or have personally negotiated for use, you are always at the mercy of the powers that be...
Hey Blake I have been really puzzled to knowing that youtube doesn't allow copyright music on videos but why is it that people like these youtubers SENSE AND PLAYLIST and BOBBY NSENGA are able to make playlist videos with music that I would think would be copy written? Do you know how this is possible? plus you can look up ex. r&b playlist and find plenty of videos with music that haven't been taken down.
Yeah, a lot has changed, more songs can be played >> here’s the deal, you can include a variety of copy written music in your videos these days in a DJ mix BUT you can not monetize that video. The original artists will get any money it makes because there will be ADs slapped onto it. Things have changed a lot since I made this video, the database no longer exists to my knowledge. Put together a video with the songs you want to use - stick it up as unpublished and see what happens. Likely you will see most songs are allowed but will have ADs on them.
I just did a new video on Live streaming tips for DJs you might find helpful, it's a little different for Facebook, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jGkTmwSug7Y.html
No idea, but would you really want to do that?!? Like is it worth it... You can always test songs out by loading the video but not making it public, the algorithms I’ll check it and indicate what songs are copy written and if the video will be banned over all...test it out first.
@@BlakeHeart I just heard some more tips that can help me avoiding using flanger. Im just thinking of any idea so that I can put out my mixes that i've made. i guess i can throw that in more often and have my whole set 5 bars faster while changing the default tempo.
i think DJS should be allowed to monetize mixtapes!! so what if it's not their music but putting different musical pieces/tracks together and blend them into one another creating a hour or so long journey takes some imagination... maybe that imagination is different from person to person and that's what makes it unique!! just saying there should be some credit given to the art of djing.. 😪 while some excellent music producers out there can't mix jackshit and don't even have what it takes to be a dj should be proud of someone who can use their music and create magical moments with it... !!! like seriously it's so frustratin!!
I am with you, it sucks. And that's why a lot of EDM producers have no issues with you using their music, though that's been changing a bit over the years and not as liberal. It is really frustrating...I wish that RU-vid would offer a solution where DJs could pay a monthly fee to use whatever track they want to in their mixes, that would be cool! And I am sure many people would be willing to pay a fair amount of money!
I watched a lot of videos on this... One says you can claim it yourself and monetize if you remix the song but didn't say to what extent. Another says you can monetize it you change the pitch or tone another says you can use it if it's under 20% of the song length...smh
I have talked to lawyers specifically about Electronic Dance Music and have had several loopholes and defenses explained to me. For example. I have been told that one may argue that dance music specifically has been engineered for the purpose of mixing and not as much listening. Therefore, when the artist purchases the music it is not dramatically different from a painter buying paint. When that painter is buying and using trademarked colors they are not expected to pay a royalty to the manufacturer when/if the painting sells. There is quite a bit more to this that touches on transformative works ect. But the gist is I have been told that there is a legit defense in this specific case. However, it has never been had to be used from what I was told. By and large dance music producers and labels are not copyright trolling DJs online or otherwise. My lawyer could not find a single lawsuit filed against a DJ for playing a copy-written song at a live event, or for distributing it on a demo cd, online ect. Oh! and BTW: If you are only playing songs in RU-vid's database then you are kind of a shit DJ in my opinion. You should be playing music that motivates you in a manner which motivates others and not just playing the same boring shit everyone else is playing.
The bottom line is that the algorithm is going to take it down if RU-vid doesn't have permission from all copyright owners to utilize the song on its platform - and Facebook is even worse...so at the end of the day, doesn't matter because the creators have no control.
@@BlakeHeart Actually the Algorithm doesn't block content it can't identify and it requires some very specific parameters be met to get a confirmation. There are entire channels of DJ mixes that have not been taken down because the music is not in RU-vid's database. (see: Partiboi69) And again from a legal perspective, all they have to do is secure public performance licenses from ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. Maybe to offset the costs they charge a small annual fee to the creators that require those licenses to be kept up to date. It could really be that simple. I'm not sure which or how they have compiled this dogshit list of "approved" music but it is far far from complete. With licenses from all three organizations one can basically play any music every released in the U.S.A. in a public forum and for profit.
AaronAlso but using it for video is different than public performance in nightclub, or similar. I’m not arguing with you, I absolutely believe the laws and licensing need to be updated because many DJs would be willing to pay a fee to be able to play these songs, just as is done by bars, restaurants and retail stores to ascap, BMI so I’m totally with what you’re saying...
@@BlakeHeart Go read the licensing agreements and various options at the ASCAP website. They actually include licenses specifically for online presentation in both pure audio and audio/video format. The problem is, and trust me I've argued with RU-vid until I was blue in the face. Even if the individual, you or me, goes and secures an ASCAP/BMI license RU-vid will not honor it. Technically they don't have too because the laws require them to have the license not the performer. RU-vid could still get sued for allowing the music to be played on their platform without being licensed. The performer would be covered, but not the platform.
This was so helpful after digitisation of old sets from the 90’s a search of those tracks shows them already listed and available on RU-vid with the publisher and licensed to RU-vid. Since I’m not monetising am I ok? Or is more research in order?
The truth is it is hit or miss...these days my advice is to put a bunch of tracks you want to use into a video that you post unlisted and see what get's flagged.
Thank you so much for the time taken to make this tutorial. YOu've helped me with the YT question. Would using the tracks with World Wide permission assist in a No Strike from SoundCloud as well, or is there some other database to check that?
Hi there! Thanks for taking the time to check out my SoundCloud page and for watching this. I don't know of a database feature on SoundCloud, it seems like the only stuff that truly gets to stay up are self-made remixes that can't be caught by the algorithm there, but I am not sure. Good luck!!!
Correct -- like your own music. It's not a given that you will get a copyright strike if you use your remixes of other people's songs but as the algorithm gets better and better, all bets might even be off on doing that...don't expect to monetize unless you own the copyright basically...
Right - that happens to, and basically you are just taking your chances if you use a song that doesn't come up there...there's no way to know if you will be hit with a copyright violation or not. And remember, if you are hit with a copyright violation, there's no way to know then if someone else will just put an ad on your video and take the money from that OR whether they will prevent it from playing totally...that's the crappy part.
Right...but you have to get your viewers over there - it's not a place where people are generally "hanging out" like twitch or youtube, so they are not just going to organically find you. You need to work your butt off to try and promote yourself in other ways to get people to Mixcloud....
@@BlakeHeart Yes, you have to promote your shows on social media. It´s a really small trade off considering that a person can produce shows about music, about the great artists and with music from the greatest artists without any problem. For people who already have thousands of followers on social media, that´s not a problem. And you can pay facebook or other platforms to engage more people. I think the great aim is not to monetize, some people think about getting money from internet. I see more on the side of creating a value work and fun. And if possible to win some money, that´s cool.
It is on the replay and that's the issue. If you look at recording videos on Twitch from DJs, you will hear that portions are silenced, same idea as what happens on YT sort of.
Ive made mix videos since 2009 and gave up and stopped since 2015. Its impossible with youtube. My videos are taken down bit by bit. I did a live mix for 3 hours and gotten almost 200k views, got copyright strike straight away. All the effort down the drain.
Sorry - it does stink. I wish that RU-vid could take a portion of $ earned from your views to pay for the streaming fees/payment to artists just like is done with public play in bars, clubs, restaurants, etc. That would be awesome, maybe some day, but I doubt it....
If the song isn't in the database you just don't know what to expect. Doesn't matter if you add the credits. Basically there are some copyright owners that are ok with having their music played on the various video platforms and there are a lot of copyright owners that are NOT ok with it. The best way to get around it is to try and trick the algorithm when you are live streaming or posting mixes. I created a new video with some tips on this -- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jGkTmwSug7Y.html Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for the video but I have a question There is this song called Mad world by Hardwell Remixed by Someone else I typed it on the music policy but it wasn't shown in there does that mean it does not have any copyright issues ?
But shouldn't a DJ be able to get paid to DJ? Djs don't just "play" music. A skilled DJ applies talent. Why can't A DJ just credit all the music they play and get a small percentage of what money it might generate? Djs should be able to get paid on RU-vid because they are artist in their own right. Those copyright songs available are usually crap. RU-vid sucks when it comes to DJ culture and a DJ shouldn't have to suck the corporate c*** to be able to freely play music either. There must be a better compromise we can come rather than the one you are being squeezed into suggesting however I appreciate your kindness. I can't even play a drum n bass vinyl on a hifi deck with out getting threatened on Facebook live. Like why shouldn't people be able to play music freely? Why buy it in the first place? With this copyright logic I should be getting threatened for playing it by myself because I'm not paying myself to hear it.
Also I meant to include this but why can't A DJ play music for FREE? getting paid is one thing but why shouldn't A DJ be able to upload a unmonetized DJ video??? Just because the label thinks they should get paid ever time a song gets played? I'm so tired of it.
Agree to some of this - not necessarily being able to play it for free if the artist doesn't want you to, BUT hoping that more artists see the advantage in allowing DJs to play and promote their music on social platforms...
hey! thanks that was helpfull, do you know how to upload dj sets in soundcloud without getting copyright striked? as fsr as i know soundcloud is more harsh about it
Soundcloud is really tough - chances are you are going to have issues and get the copyright strikes for anything that is NOT yours. It stinks, but that's just the way it is...hopefully that changes at some point.
Thanks for information, but i got one question, What will happen if you mix Some part only of each song like you take drums, or Synths, bass, vocal of other song and mix or make remix in your DJset what will happen?
It all depends on whether the algorithm can figure out what the song is, if it can read that it i a copywritten song, or aspect of a song. The algorithms are getting smarter each year - but yes, if you are really mixing things up, changing pitch, etc., maybe it gets by....
Hello Blake and what if you cant find a track in YT music database? I uploaded my dj mix and it was okay. Is it possible that they can take it down after some time?
If you buy a song from beatport, just check the database and see if it is in there. I have found that some house songs that are more obscure or newer are not in there. If they aren't in there, there is no way to know what will happen to your mix unfortunately.
Thanks for watching and for the compliment. I am not aware, but I am sure they exist. I know there's something that comes with FL Studio if you happen to use that software. The other thing you can do is find other people's visual images on RU-vid, do a screen record of them and then use them in your own video that you edit. There are people that actually make visuals like that because they want you to use them...
Link is in description - that is the YT database of music and tells you what you can play with no issues...no list per genre, though that would be helpful!!!
Michał Dańczak if it’s not there, it’s hit or miss, you’re taking your chances with getting a copyright strike and having the video taken down. My advice is to stay with the sure bets that are listed there...
Idk Man This Is A Lotta Hard Work Especially If I'm Doing Multiple Mixes And My Mixes Can Be A Hour Or 2 Long. Just Imagine Making 10 Mixes 10 hours Long. To literally think of Songs Ima gonna use And Then Check to see if I can use em. Noo noo I'll be there forever! It Would Be Cool if On Sites like youtube/Soundcloud Could Just Have DJs Somehow Someway Prove They Are Actual Real DJs And Be Excluded From The Rules.
I hear you...I've always thought they should give DJs the opportunity to pay some fees like but that will take forever to work out since there's such a difference between audio only performance and video rights performances...some day the laws will catch up to the technology, just not sure when!!
Hi Blake thank you for this. I'm looking to do a Live Stream DJ Mix this weekend. I'm not eligible or looking to monitize. As per your video, if you only select tracks which have "ads can appear" can an ad literally get added in when streaming live? or do the ads potentially get added in after during play back? Thanks
Potentially, since the underlying music had copyrights on it. Even if you get your mix to be able to play on RU-vid, it doesn't mean you will be able to monetize it and make money...
It's called green screen or chroma key - you just need to have a green screen behind you and then in post, you are able to key your video of yourself so that the green back ground disappears.
Hey new subscriber 🙏 appreciate the video.. but I have to use 90's hip hop for Live streaming on IG and maybe RU-vid... I get blocked fast on IG. Was thinking maybe I could use remixes, but also just came up with the idea of putting white noise over the mix to block the A.I. 😆 thoughts?
No thoughts - sorry! It's a harsh world out there and with the advances in technology it is hard to fool the algorithms. I presume the content may be allowed on RU-vid because they have a system set up to pay royalties to those people whose music you are using BUT that IG doesn't have a system set up the same way as RU-vid so they don't allow it. I have no idea...it's all about trying it and seeing what works. How would white noise work, wouldn't your listeners be annoyed by having to hear white noise in the mix? Why not move to Twitch vs. IG and send people there to hear you?
@@BlakeHeart you're right, probably won't sound good.. my audience is already on IG, 15.9k ..but it's hard enough to get them to show up there let alone move them to another platform lol guess we'll have to hope IG gets the licenses one day. Thanks for your input 💚
If it's not on the list there's no telling what may happen....sorry. You may find that you use it and it's ok, no strike -- or that there is. You may also find that there's no strike for a few months....and then you get one.
Thanks for this.. but this only helps if you're the kind of DJ that plans every single song that they're gonna' play. I'm way too random for that. Off the top or nothing.
Right, a lot of people are starting to live stream DJing right now - so agreed, you would have to plan out your set for a livestream. Head over to Twitch or Caffeine though, there are a lots of places to livestream outside of youtube!
What about posting other DJ mixes? This is strictly for workout /dance sessions! I ain't no DJ I listen to DJ mixes! cuz, only DJ's have time to make mixes.
@@BlakeHeart I don't have a RU-vid channel, and I'm thinking that's why i can't check to see if a song is available for play just the way you demonstrated.
Green screen or also called chroma key - basically you need a green screen behind you, decent lightning on the screen and then a video editing program that allows you to use a chroma key to block out the background and just see yourself on the screen.
