So you’re trying to distract the dog with food instead of the other dog. You’re doing that by calling their name. What if they are so focused on the other dog they ignore you? Then what? As soon as my dog sees another dog, they don’t even know I’m on the other end of the leash.

Increase distance. The dog is over threshold if no longer listening to you.

I found I had to use a better treat as well. The better treat became more important than the other dog distraction.

I tried even steak, my dog is not food, or toy motivated, good luck with treats (tried at least 100 different treats, not working).

@@agnesmeszaros-matwiejuk8783 yeah my dog can care less about anything but the other dog or person walking by. Treats arent gonna work by themselves. What I find is that even me standing in front of the dog between the distraction with a treat works for a few minutes maybe.

@@agnesmeszaros-matwiejuk8783just use her food. She has to eat something at some point, so toss the food bowl into the garbage and wait for her to be willing to *work* for it. It may take a day or two but it's so worth it!

I'm trying my best with my lab who is nearly 2 and just wants to play with every dog and gets easily over excited. I've put a lot of your training techniques to use and they do work but unfortunately I can't always control the situation and what other dog owners do, especially those who let their dog who is off leash come and run up to mine when I'm trying to train him. It's really frustrating.

Yeah I have the same problem!!! It could of been me writing this. I too have a lab almost 2!!! Soo frustrating when you are trying so hard to train your dog. But I just keep on and hopefully will reap the benefits. It's hard work..

What if your dog is not food driven? I have tried every kind of treat down to high reward treats such as cooked chicken etc, but if there is another dog in view, my dog is so overly excited and that dog is all that they care about. (No matter how far away) if they can see them. For reference, My dog's intent is in no way aggressive toward other dogs, but overly eager to want to go play with them. I have also tried special toys and play to distract as well with no success. Thank you!! :)

Same here, my dog is neither food nor toy motivated.
@41SMASH

@@agnesmeszaros-matwiejuk8783 it's highly unlikely your dog has no food nor toy drive. It's probably a problem in you or your approach, being that you're not engaging enough for the dog or that you let the dog find it's own reinforcement when it choses to do so. Unless in distress, pain or complacency, your dog will be food driven. You could always try to use food when he is really hungry.
@bettinalykke5151
@bettinalykke5151 Год назад
Try not feeding your dog several hours before the walk so it is very hungry when you walk it and then offer high value treats. Some dogs have a very high need for social interaction just like humans so that need must be satisfied before you can demand "unnatural" behavior from your dog in the beginning. Try takeing it to the dogpark for at least one hour and then train with it afterwards.
@agnesmeszaros-matwiejuk8783

I really wish this worked for my grown husky. It's super hard bc she doesn't even kind of care about food or treats when we're outside. How the heck do you reward a good choice when they don't care about the reward in the context of walking (or being outside at all tbh)??

My husky pup is just over a year and is great inside but outside around people and animals she does ok as far as getting her to sit but it's very brief and her husky comes out of her because she starts whining/low screeching barks then she goes and tries to pull me towards whatever she is wanting, and she's not aggressive just wanting to be friends with everyone and everything

We have a very similar problem with our Great Dane pup! Although, not just other dogs, smells and sniffing too! We struggle so much to get her attention, to even be interested in taking a treat. Toys are a big one, that's the one thing we can use to get her attention when out on walks and it works 9/10, but gets her quite amped up to the point where she will often start jumping up at the lead and biting at it once the toy goes away, if anybody have any advice on this, please, we'd be extremely grateful!

Was so impressed with this video that I had to comment. LOVE that one of the trainers was willing to admit she got too close to the other dog and what she did to correct it. Some trainers can be arrogant and say they did it on purpose but just love the honesty here. 5 stats I would hire these trainers any day

We live in the mountains, so my pup has had very limited exposure to other people. Being a lab, she wants to to jump and lick and get all over our elderly neighbor when she comes over. I need to focus on training this skill by asking friends to visit and help, day after day.

@@judymiller5154 this is also true for us. Finding others with a well grounded dog is zero to none, here. Classes are way too expensive for us and too far away.

Try working with your dog in your house with few distractions. Build that relationship and then slowly add distractions as she improves. It’s a process. When my 50# 6 mo old puppy pulls, I turn and walk the other way. It is exhausting, but she really improved with consistency. Good luck!

We have one 6 month old puppy that has bad scared aggression towards other dogs. My family has dogs but they are also not very well trained and will be aggressive back. What is a way for me to train my dog (and possibly my families dog) to not be aggressive towards other dogs with what we have?

Some dogs are hunting dogs by nature so their personality is different. We can't all send out dogs for constant training and need a hands on quick video. The dog focuses on you because you the source of the food.

Excellent video, though I do have a question about around 8:40. As Carol approaches the other dog and she got too close, as she turns away from distraction her hand is closed in front of the dog's nose. was she holding food in her hand to lure the dog away? Apologies for seeking clarification, I just want to make sure. My aim is to encourage the dog to offer the behaviour without resorting to luring.

We have only had him for a week but we have noticed that he is a nibbler we have watched your videos on how to stop puppy bites so far they have not made much of a difference . We are open to any suggestions you can provide. Thank you very much! P.S he is teething.

My pup is coming up to 7 months old and he loves off lead ball chasing . but where as before he didnt run up to other dogs , he has started to do this. I am happy to keep him on the lead and do some training . but my question is do i have to stop letting him off lead to chase his ball untill trained and if yes how can i still let him play ball in the field? thanks

As long as you have a good recall and your pup will do it even if he wants to run up to that other dog, you can still play ball in the field with him.

My dog is deaf. How do I adjust this lesson to fit for him? He is a recent 1 yr old Blue Heeler pup.
@ALNizhoni
@ALNizhoni 7 месяцев назад
You need to look into touch training, also called tap training. Deaf dogs have their own methods, so you'll want to use those specific methods. Don't try to force training methods for hearing dogs, as they don't work. Deaf dogs have a whole set of other considerations you'll need to be aware of.
