Wow, the skill and precision in which you manuver this vehicle is amazing!!! I never knew you could store or fit a vehicle in a place like that! Kudos Ron for a job extremely well done!

Yes you can. I use to store my 2014 Camaro in one. The owner of the facility was worried when I wanted to store a car there. At first he was scared because he thought it was an old car with leaks lol

I never realized that flatbeds had all these anchor points for changing the direction of pull. Quite satisfying watching you use this technique to gently coax that vehicle out of the unit.
@1973mre
@1973mre 4 года назад
You can customize the bed when they build the truck so whatever you want. Ours was maxed out with wires with flat sides and next with an extra 2 feet added to the bed. We had chain crosses Add it to the center as well same as the side since we hauled a lot of equipment. The only thing I wish we had was the remote. I specked out our truck But we did have the bash bar attached to the bed rather than the truck. It was a 4400 chassis.
@adamrandomguy2347
@adamrandomguy2347 3 года назад
Those anchor points are there for tie-down locations, strictly speaking redirecting your winch line and using a flat decks winch line for recoveries is frowed upon due to the equipment not being designed to work that way. You can do it, but it does not mean you should. He states I the video that the winch is only for unloading and loading recovery, I was trained that recoveries with a deck truck are not allowed due to the equipment not being designed for recovery work.

So, no cars and trucks speeding past you and no power lines trying to bite you and no pressure getting everything tied down. How relaxing of a job for you! Although you do make even the most difficult jobs look easy. Thanks for sharing!

There is a lot of speculation about why this vehicle ended up in a storage locker and that there may have been criminal activity involved. Please allow me to clarify.....we are required by law to have the police department run a VIN check on any tow such as this to determine if the vehicle is reported stolen or has been involved in any KNOWN criminal activity. When this vehicle was ran through the police database, it can back CLEAR. I do not know why it was in the storage locker. That being said, it is possible that some of these vehicles may have been involved in UNKNOWN criminal activity. However, it would be pure speculation. I have a job to do and there are legal steps that I MUST follow so that I am not in possession of a "questionable" vehicle. Also......as I always say, there are many ways to perform a job. As long as a job is performed safely, then who is to criticize? However, I have received a LOT of criticism over how I performed this job. I KNOW that there are other methods that may have been faster. I KNOW there are products available that may have made this task easier. I KNOW that I am not perfect. I used what I had available and the task was performed without damage or injury. I accept constructive criticism, because I KNOW that I do not know everything. I learn every day. I hope to continue learning for many more years. Anyone who claims to KNOW everything might want to reconsider. I do NOT like it when people are rude with their comments and, unfortunately, this video has stirred a LOT of rude comments. Please be polite and professional......none of us are perfect.....I certainly know that I am not. As the scripture says "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"......Can those making the critical comments honestly state that they have never performed a task that they couldn't have done better or learned from??? Thanks for watching and God bless.

After reading your thoughts and a few of the comments by others, I thoroughly enjoyed watching you extract the vehicle from a rather unique position inside the storage unit, your narrative during the procedure along with the written tutorial made it all the more clear as to what you were trying to accomplish, first-safely, second-no damage to the storage unit itself, and third-no further damage to the vehicle. I don’t recall ever using the small pulley and chain in the anchor points the way you do in a lot of scenarios like this one, my hat it tipped to the person who thought up the technique...this was when I operated a flat bed and medium duty wheel lift back in the late 1990’s.... Keep up the great work and amazing videos you choose to share with us.. Thank you!

The front bumper cover had been inexpertly riveted-on or screwed-on though, visible at 23:40. If the vehicle was in a hit-and-run, someone took the time afterward to reattach the front bumper cover with tools instead of simply removing it or leaving it as-is. There's enough rust on the rumpled parts that I would be surprised if it went into the storage unit right after the damage was caused too. This has the vibe to me of someone having received a grandparent's car for free after the grandparent stopped driving after a moderate wreck, tried to fix the the car without knowledge/ability/funds, and then put it into storage hoping to get back to it later, but couldn't afford the storage unit rent and just left it.

People seriously underestimate the level of technical skill and finesse required to do a recovery like this with this large of a flatbed in the small of a space with zero damage to the building. I hope you're training up apprentices. These are skills that only get learned hands-on. Well done.

That was a tight squeeze no doubt. I used to work in a storage and truck rental for a short time and I always wondered what was in those delequent storage units. one never knows I guess. drugs were found, stolen items, even get this....spoiled food items. But not a vehicle uh yet. I found a unit where someone was living in. One never knows what goes on in these places. Always keep safe and before all things and before everything....keep God first. I do and He is Good. Yes God is good and I can't do anything without Him with me. God Bless you, your family, and your staff and crew. Michael ( Retired Firefighter - 2014 ) NW North Carolina

Ron that was one tight pull! I know what you talking about being in there. Many rich folks had us tow cars and trucks to their barns back in old days when no one on scene. I had two great wrecked cars during high school and to drive. One old wrecked Grand Prix that lots of body, that putty fixed the right rear fender good enough 😂. And a 4 year old Buick that only had 20K miles on it. Cost me 2k to have nit fix, the guy had no insurance and let it set in storage three years, cut his loss and gave us title once he had it paid off. Was a great car.

A lot of times I say to myself “well that’s not how I would do that” while watching Ron’s videos. Usually the difference between somebody that makes his living in the recovery industry and somebody that watches RU-vid videos about it quickly becomes apparent. Dish soap for example, I never would have thought of that. I find the legal side of a recovery like this interesting as well. I figured the burden would be on the storage facility owner and they would have to put a lien on the title similar to how a mechanic does for a car abandoned at their shop with unpaid repair bills. Keep up the good work Ron, stay safe, and God bless.

You are the expert. And I am NOT trying to tell you how to do your job. I'd no doubt screw up the majority of what you do, and you do well. But I would have done this one a bit different. I would have pulled it square to the doorway first, just like you did. But at that point, I would have disconnected from the truck, then moved the truck clear to the other side of that "driveway". Then used the winch and pulleys, to pull the car straight out the door toward the tail of the truck, until the door was completely cleared. Then moved the truck again, to pull the car up on the bed.

All fall into hard times a few times in their life. This happened to me with a new S-10 I had many years ago. The repo man came to tow my S-10 because I could not pay the payments after the economy collapse. I had to get a much lesser job to keep my home. I saw the tow truck coming and the repoman getting out of the tow truck. I simply stopped him. I told him I was going to get the keys. I came out with a drink for him, the keys, asked if I could take a few things out. The repoman was impressed and let me take out my belongings and enjoyed his drink. I then shook his hand, he wished me luck, and he drove the S-10 onto the flat bed tow truck. He wished me luck again and that was the last I ever saw of the S-10. As I mentioned, all fall into hard times from time to time. The way you handle yourself at those dark times shows a lot about you. If you can not pay for something, do not hide it or refuse to give it up. Just cooperate. Someone else has a job to do by taking your vehicle. Why make it unpleasant for the repo worker that has nothing to do with us not being able to pay for our vehicle. Just give them the keys.

I was thinking neutral and wheel chocks. With ropes attached, you can ever drag the chocks along so they act like a ratchet to hold your progress. Obviously, that's more of a hard surface solution and Ron seems to attract mudhole calls, but this would have been a good one for it.
@Syniron

Go Jacks can be useful but you also have to be careful using them. This vehicle here is front wheel drive so if you apply Go Jacks to the front wheels you now have a free rolling vehicle which can cause it's own issues.

Back in the 90's I moved lots like that...rolled it out of the locker, put a trolley jack under the front and spun it 90deg with the winch and the front wheels off the floor. Then up the ramps an off.... Also if you put a block of wood by that NS rear wheel it will roll over the wood and away from the tight corner...!!

Little tip. When scoping out the job or doing a tie down, kick your idle up. Your engine will thank you. Not good for the big diesels to sit at low idle for extended periods. I never let my truck sit at low idle. You risk running the engine cold, and a cold cylinder will not atomize the fuel properly and you get glazing by the oil being washed off the bores. Also dilutes your oil faster.

Worked at a shop years ago and we used our rollback to tow the racecar back and forth to the track each weekend. Ours had the side rails that could be removed, ideally a 2 person job but easy enough for 1 person to do by themselves. Now this was also like a 1980s rollback but I figured that'd be a standard feature on modern ones too. Would've made it a lot easier as it wouldn't have gotten hung on the rail and you wouldn't have had to adjust as much.

Having recovered a few like this, it's usually people who get into a wreck, then want the car to be totaled to collect the insurance money, but insurance won't pay. They stop making the payment and the car goes up for recovery so they hide them in storage units so they cannot be recovered while they try to fight the insurance battle. Never seen any of these people come out on top, usually ends up with the car getting towed away one way or another.
