May is 'Foot Health Month' in Canada and I am going to try to use this month to give you guys as much advice and information about how to keep your feet healthy.
FOOT HEALTH MONTH 2018 #12
Suffering from foot discomfort and considering to buy an over-the-counter (OTC) insole? Not sure if they will help? Unsure if a custom orthotic is the better solution for you?
Today we go over the differences between several OTC insoles and how they compare to a custom-made orthotic.
Love,
The Toe Bro

Complaint 1: why don’t ANY running/cross training/sneaker style shoes have even minimal arch support? Just a little bit, even? Complaint 2: why are nearly all running/cross training sneaker style shoes made from so much soft mesh fabric that offers NO upper foot support…causing a LOT more pronation to occur? This crap makes me crazy….particularly because the Columbia Birki shoe I’ve been wearing for 8 years have been discontinued. I have bought and returned so many shoes in the past 6 months I could cry….

I recently watched a video of a guy who used an over the counter insole. He customized it to his own feet by making a silicon mold in which he added it to the insole. It formed to his own foot and filled in the difference. It ended costing the price of the insole plus roughly 10 dollars for supplies.

Depending on what country you live in, you should see about going to a Pedorthist. They are trained specifically in the assessment and manufacturing for custom foot orthotics, and are going to be able to better determine the problem. Try and find one with an on-site lab to make sure that you are getting the most comprehensive treatment. Good luck!

A custom orthodic will not help if the shoe youre wearing has horrible fitment. For example the shoe could have super high arch support then no matter what insole you put will still dig into your arch.

I was in a lot of pain one night and went to an urgent care and that PA there tell me to go to Walgreens and get the Walgreens brand insoles for plantar fasciitis. I did it she said it's been almost 2 years and I've never had pain since! sometimes what works for one doesn't work for another but in my case this did the trick!! doctors are incentivized to suggest more expensive stuff , but plantar fascitis has many causes which should be the basis for treatment. most common causes for it is the weight of the person, if the plantar fascia can't handle providing support to the weight, youll overstretch it and cause pain. another cause is activity or overwork/overuse, relieving it by the obvious- reduction of the work, adding rest to let it recover. and another is your footwear, basically shoes that have arch support, proper cushioning and repositioning the foot in an arched position that doesn't allow much "give" so that the fascia doesn't get overstretched, this however again doesn't prevent other problems from following, EX knee pain musclular and postural problems. kyphosis, lordosis, scoliosis, arthritis (osteo).

I would love too get custom made ones but can’t afford 500.00. I am going too look into getting a pair for my shoes that I thought the arch support was high enough. I put my finger inside the shoe and the support didn’t even come close to my arch. They are expensive shoes too. My last surgeon recommended Superfeet so I have at least 3 pairs, but they hurt my feet so I don’t use them very often. I have a huge box of every conceivable kind of insole. I call it the insole graveyard. I also keep my stretchers aka The Rack in the box. The kind you like are pretty much the best for me as well, when I actually wear closed shoes. Truthfully, I love wedges. They give me enough of a lift in back so my Achilles tendinitis does not hurt so bad on breakover, while simultaneously having enough of a platform to prevent too much weight on the ball of my foot. I have not found any orthotics that work with wedges but there are a few shoe brands that look amazing and the sole is actually an orthotic. Earthies is a fantastic brand. Bionica is good too. If any of your fans are shoe Fashionistas like I am and haven’t checked out these brands, I encourage them too. These days they make shoes that look like only a 20 YO can wear them, but work for us older girls as well. There is nothing more depressing than shoes that look like those the old German ladies wore when I was an Army Brat growing up in Germany. Ugh. One of the best places to buy shoes of every kind at up to 80% off retail is 6pm.com. They are a Zappos clearinghouse. The shoes are not seconds either. Just sign up for their email specials and browse what category you want. The specials change all the time so if you see a steal get it. Also, Sierra Trading Post can have amazing deals on shoes, sporting gear, clothing...lots of things. Again, sign up for emails to keep in the loop. Both sites offer brand name and even designer footwear, some for WalMart prices if you check frequently. Hope this helps everyone find a few dozen pairs. I know I always do!👠👡👢👟👞🧦

Before inserts, starting about 45 years old, in the mornings I woke up rolled out of bed and walked like a crab until I “loosened up” 🦀 😂 With inserts I don’t have that issue anymore… plus I can touch my toes much easier without a nagging uncomfortable tightness and my sciatica isn’t a daily pain/pinch down my entire back and leg! I used to even have pain, that I thought was a link to my larger phone, in my thumbs but that’s gone to and it hasn’t returned either… Weird but true! I have a scoliosis s curve (since middle school), extra high arches plus a couple car accidents… I bought supports that go around my feet for when I am barefoot, sticky arch gel insoles for all my tennis shoes, and memory foam orthopedic inserts in all of my sneakers!! I will not walk without any type of support for my ankles ever again if I can help it 💯

Hi from an anatomical perspective the muscles around the foot are not designed to support the foot arch. A foot that is pronating to the point there are symptoms in the foot ankle knee hip and back, a bespoke orthoses may seem expensive but in the long term worth the pain relief Would you buy off the shelf glasses if still getting headaches from poor prescription glasses? Bottom line yes some feet are ok with off the shelf but patients I see definitely need bespoke foot orthoses (uk based)

I sold and wore Superfeet for 15 years until I got custom made orthidics for my low arches and overpronation. Gel inserts don't support your foot. Think of it like a mattress and back support. A soft mattress doesn't support your back like a firm mattress would.

This is a very informative video. Whoever the one person that dislike this video must have bad toes. I had to get custom made insoles due to me having plantar fasciitis. I never wore them because it feels so uncomfortable. I'll try again to gradually for them to fit comfortable. It sucks having plantar fasciitis 😔😑

Mis Nii , has your physical therapist done ultrasonic therapy on your foot? I had 2 sessions of it combined with exercises and I haven't had any trouble since.

Custom Orthotics help my husband survive a hard work day, and relieves the pain from plantar fasciitis and bone spurs. The first time he wore them,it was a huge difference. I like the foam insoles myself.

Doctor I have a question ..I wear size 14. And I have Mortons toe . Therefore I have capsulitis, I need to find an orthodits the helps to switch the loud and pressure from second toe . metatarsal to the big toe and arch .any recommendations thanks doctor

I think the insoles need to also fit into your shoes. I use superfeet insoles because I have high arches. I get plantar fascia which can affect my calf muscles. Sometimes the superfeet doesn’t fit in my shoes. I would like to know what kind of exercises that would help my feet and knees. Thanks Joyce 😊

any combat boot insoles? I play airsoft and I do a lot of walking sprinting and running while carrying 8 pounds of gear plus a 5-10 pound rifle.

Can wearing Hoka sneakers solve all this? My podiatrist recommended to buy Hoka sneakers but no insoles. 🤔

Too be honest moulded insoles are better its the same why music pros use in ear monitors that are moulded to fit the problem comes with cost and better brands with better technology in that department will also make custom more expensive but if your foot hurts from regular insoles and even upgraded ones moulded ones contour your foot better standard upgraded fit insoles

Late to the party but I use the second insoles shown and they are actually really good for work. Enough support that my back and arches don't hurt and breathable enough that my feet aren't stinky after 8 hours in leather shoes. That said I'm only about 120lbs so I don't know how well they'd work for heavier people

Just wear barefoot shoes to build up foot strength and proper biomechanics (that affects everything in general besides just feet) without insoles and take it easy if it hurts and just build up over time.

Very good information. The visual of each type of insole really helps to see the difference. Any suggestions if you have peroneal tendonitis on the outer edges of the foot? I guessing then I do not want too much of an arch support because there'll more pressure on the peroneal tendon right? Thanks!

People who dislike are competing! and trolls because who the heck dislikes an idea? comparison of factory made devices. I have extremely high insoles/arches and suffer with buying comfortable shoes as well as getting support. I walk around the house 90 percent of the time barefoot. The top of the insoles/arches burn and have incredible pain as do the bones.

I have wide heels. Most insoles poke me and don't match my arch. I also need a firm one. I noticed the day wearing Etnies sneakers. When The isole is too soft I just ended flattening out and I can feel the undersole which also matters. Your foot can feel the underole.

If he is very young he might not need them, children naturally have flat feet. The arches develop with age. Take him to a foot specialist if he is very young, you dont want him wearing them unnecessarily.

I wish you would do footprint insole Gamechangers. You have to put them in the oven for 8 min at 235 degrees then put them in your shows and walk around so that they custom mold to your feet. They are for skateboarding and are supposed to absorb 91% of impact . I think it’s a marketing gimmick
