Astronaut Fred Haise served as lunar module pilot for the mission, which was originally scheduled to be a ten-day trip to the Fra Mauro region of the moon. Approximately 55 hours into the flight, the service module’s cryogenic oxygen system ruptured, causing the flight plan to change dramatically. Haise and fellow crewmen James A. Lovell and John L. Swigert worked closely with Houston ground controllers to convert their lunar module "Aquarius" into an emergency lifeboat, conserving both the electrical power and water needed to ensure their survival and safe return trip back to Earth.
The event is produced in partnership with NSF - NASASpaceflight.com and hosted and co-produced by John “Das” Galloway.

GUEST BIOS:
Fred Haise served as a backup Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 8 and Apollo 11 before serving as the Lunar Module Pilot for the Apollo 13 mission. He worked with NASA for nine years after Apollo 13, serving on the backup crew for Apollo 16, commanding free flight test missions for the Space Shuttle program, and was scheduled to command Apollo 19 before its cancellation. He left NASA in 1979 to work as an executive for Grumman Aerospace Corp.
Mike Massimino is a New York Times bestselling author who served as a NASA Astronaut from 1996 to 2014. He is a four-time spacewalker who completed two missions to the Hubble Space Telescope, including the final Hubble servicing mission which has been called the most dangerous and complex mission in space shuttle history. Mike set a team record with his crewmates for the most cumulative spacewalking time in a single space shuttle mission, and he was also the first person to tweet from space. Mike received his BS from Columbia University and his PhD from MIT. He currently lives in New York City where he is a professor at Columbia, Senior Space Advisor at the Intrepid Museum, an expert television commentator, and an in-demand keynote speaker. He also had a recurring role as himself on The Big Bang Theory television series.

Wow, one of the best interviews I've seen. Just like Capcoms are astronauts, this shows the value of having the interviewer be one.

This is fantastic. I was 50 yo ten days ago. Still too young (not born) to witness this stuff when it happened. My first time machine destination would be an Apollo look launch day. Even when your grammar and English is dodgy, you guys make unmissable content. I can watch the 3 hour stuff anytime. I even sleep to this shizzle😂

If future space exploration stood a chance, only Air Force TEST Pilots would make it happen!

When the interviewer took 5 minutes just to let Mr Haise speak and referred to him as a "boyhood hero" and then a "command module pilot" (he was not!) I began to sense trouble. That said: it was wonderful to hear Mr Haise speak and it was highly interesting. I'm none the wiser about his book though because the interviewer failed to point the cover at the camera!

Mike (Massimino, former NASA Shuttle Astronaut, STS-109, 125) was born in 1962... so he was ~8 years old at the time Fred flew on Apollo 13 in 1970. It seems perfectly reasonable that Fred could have been a boyhood hero to Mike. Here's a link to the book, which was mentioned multiple times over the course of the show, and linked often in the live (and replayed) chat: amzn.to/3XzDySI Hope this helps. - John

Hello John. You missed my point, perhaps because I wasn't clear enough. Firstly I do know who Mike is and I've greatly enjoyed his output recently; not least the "Three Funny Astronauts' video which was excellent. However, you would think that Mike would know that his boyhood hero flew the Lunar Module and not the Command Module. He made this mistake at least twice during the intro and subsequent conversation. As a 60 year old, Freddo was one of my boyhood heros too and NASA included his picture in a large pack of material that they sent to my UK home in 1973 including flight press releases for 11 and 13. Various signed astronaut pictures (some probably auto-pen) including Aldrin, Lovell and Schmitt and much more. I still have it all of course. Thanks for the additional information about the book; I must have been looking away when it was subsequently shown.

I didn't really understand why you had a problem with him saying Fred was a boyhood hero... it didn't seem relevant to the rest of your message. And referring to him as "the interviewer" made it seem like you might not be aware of his qualifications (which is partially on me, as I didn't recite the litany of Mike's accomplishments before handing him the show... so we could get to the special guest more quickly). We did cover Fred's Appllo 13th role a few times during the show (and I guess, realistically, none of them ended up being CSM pilots 😅). Thanks for the response, and thanks for watching 👍 - John
