Growing and preserving your own food comes with too many rewards to list. We work hard during the summer months to assure we will have a steady food supply over the winter season.
A constant challenge we face is of where to appropriately store all of this invaluable food. We give you a quick glimpse of how we address this in our small cabin then bring you along for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀
Thank you for watching and supporting our channel! 💙

If you want thinner pasta, oil that table and roll out in the oil, it'll allow your dough to slide along the surface of the table. You can also let your pasta dough rest for an hour or so to let the gluten develop. That'll allow the dough to stretch more.

As a writer living a very modern life, it's sometimes hard to imagine just how much food a person needs to survive winter, let alone most of a year, yet it can be useful to visualize it for storytelling purposes. So it's great to be able to see visually how much food you have for two people...and yes, I know that's not always counting all the things in that large chest freezer, either! What would be a rough percentage of food brought in from other sources (grocery, hunting, fishing) to supplement what you have? Things from outside your property, I mean, the things you don't have in your food storage.
@tjeanvlogs9894

Here is a base number for you as a writer, 3 million calories per family of 4 per year yields about 2000 calories per day. This is the base number I use when helping people design their permaculture projects.

surely there's a cookbook in the making here? although no one not living in a hunting/fishing area, could afford to make such great protein meals, the pasta/bread/tortilla/etc and the canning of certain stuff, would be applicable to all those with gardens, allotments, or good markets (real outdoor markets not supermarkets). Your cabin looks great. Love it when you cook using all the food you have harvested and preserved. Love seeing all the pets.

❤ The content of canning 🧑‍🍳 💁🏾 watching the two of you is special in the best ways! I’m older, I’m learning from you so many techniques that I never had the opportunity to consider trying. Sorting out the crime and trauma within myself and society. It’s refreshing to know that there’re still some people making the most out of this life, with work, nature and love. I don’t have a much but spiritually I’ve managed to stay sanely. Watching your videos help too and encourage me to keep trying. Happy holidays, Kwanzaa, Felix Navidad and Hanukkah or Merry Christmas 🎄🕎🎅🧑‍🎄🧑‍🎄 🎊🐶🐾

I use Mason jars for "store bought" food storage, too. One thing I've learned to do is take stock of the pantry before we plan the garden for the next year. For instance, one year we had a bumper crop of cucumber, and I made a lot of pickles and relishes. That was 2017. I still do not need to grow a lot of cukes, because there is still a lot of relishes on the shelf! Potato leek soup sounds wonderful, great idea fur next year's harvest.

Lovely. as always! This is my 53rd Alaska winter and today's drive from my gym in Eagle River to home in Wasilla ranks among the top 5 scariest drives of my life. And I drove during pipeline construction over Thompson Pass in the dark of January. The wind, whiteout, drifts ---- crazy! Got to come home to your video - so all is well. Hope you two have a lovely and happy Holiday!

Gosh, I never even thought about the weight of your canned food! You guys are such creative and talented cooks. I love how you improvise and use what you have. Thank you for your videos. I can’t quite express how much I enjoy ‘sharing’ your experiences. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from very cold (-2F/wind chill -20F), snowy and windy Northern Kentucky!

Mason Jar Lovers, you can make a Christmas Tree out of those jars. Maybe take some jars with red, green and or red & green food in them. put three jars in a straight line for the bottom. two jars on the top of them for the middle layer and top with one Jar for the top lay. Top with a star or some sort of ornament. Tou could also fill empty jars with ornaments. Lets see your tree. Seasons Greetings and lots of Joy and success.
