Storing Ammo for a Very Long Time with Mylar Bags - Protection from Corrosion & Oxidization

Today I'm going through the simple steps to store some ammunition in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers, including the heat sealing process. Storing ammo (or anything else) in mylar bags helps ensure it will be protected from moisture, oxygen, and light.

I found some ammo that I forgot about and after 20 years, there was minimal corrosion on a few of the rounds, but corrosion nonetheless. Thanks, John.

You can vacuum seal them with a vacuum and a small hose like a refrigerator ice box size hose. zip most of the bag up and stick the hose barely past the zip, run your finger up the side to push the hose out and zip the bag completely. Seal it fast and make sure the bag didnt suck air back in it.

I've seen videos where you can vacuum seal mylar bags with just a strip of the rigged piece from vacuum bags. Haven't tried it myself though.

How about doing the ammo up in Mylar bags without the oxygen absorbers? The reason I ask is because I have loads of Mylar bags but I've run out of O2 absorbers, and since I'd like to do this as quickly as possible, I'm wondering if the O2 absorbers are absolutely necessary for doing up ammo this way.

I wouldn't think they are absolutely necessary. Keeping moisture away is the most important thing, which the mylar will handle. But it could be argued that if you were aiming to store ammo for years or decades, removing the oxygen just takes out one more ingredient that contributes to corrosion. Since many people store their ammo just in a standard can without any mylar or O2 absorbers, I'm inclined to think it'll work fine.

I don't see why not, though you might also want to throw a couple desiccant packs in there as well. Also, make sure the pistol is freshly cleaned and oiled (oil protects from corrosion).

I've been advised against using oxygen absorbers by a number of people. Moisture absorbers yes, 02 absorbers, no.

I've never heard anyone advise against using O2 absorbers for storing dry things. Do you have any idea why they advised against it?
