If the bag doesn't tighten up doesn't mean that the oxygen absorber didn't work. Oxygen absorbers only remove Oxygen which is composed of 21% of the air and 78% of the air is nitrogen. If the bag doesn't look tighten rest assured that what's left in the bag is only nitrogen which won't harm the food you are preserving. Don't forget that some products are nitrogen flushed to preserve freshness, because nitrogen is the heavier gas, it sinks to the bottom, pushing out the oxygen. It's similar to placing a stone in a cup of water, causing the water to spill out.
@shananagans5
@shananagans5 4 года назад
As far as the bags sucking up, keep in mind that only about 21% of the air in our atmosphere is actually oxygen. The rest is nitrogen (78%) argon (1%) and some other trace gases. Oxygen is the only thing you are really worried about. If you have enough oxygen absorber in the bag to take care of the oxygen, the extra space in the bag is mostly just nitrogen and that won't harm your food. That said, yea, I like to see my bags suck up, at least a little, because it lets you know the absorber worked and you have a tight seal.

I know I’m a few months behind, but just so you know, your flour and cornmeal will be just fine :) the only thing will be that you will have to add the baking powder and stuff once again when you go to use it, because it loses its ability to rise on its own over time. But the flour will be fine. I’ve been getting my son use to flat breads just in case we are ever in a situation where I can’t make bread loaves. He says it’s pretty cool because it’s like the unleavened bread in the Bible :) So just wanted to ease your mind. Love your video, God bless you

You can also make a sourdough starter by just mixing water and flour together in a mason jar and leaving it on your counter for a few days, then feeding it every day or so. Plenty of videos for this on RU-vid. No need for other leaveners ☺️

You don't need to freeze the products before you put them in the mylar bags if you are using the oxygen absorbers. Any bugs or larvae are killed when the oxygen is removed from the bag. The freezer causes condensation and mold, if you don't get the product dried out well, so why chance it when not necessary?
@southtexasprepper1837
@southtexasprepper1837 Год назад
Either way, it's best to be on the safe side. For myself, I freeze my corn meal and flour to be extra sure that any bugs are dead. As far as large bags of rice (50 lbs. bags is concerned), I take the precaution of allowing the bag to remain in the freezer five (5) to seven (7) days to kills any pests. Then, I allow the supplies taken out of the freezer and allow to get back up to room temperature and pack it away to storage.

I use the 7ml bags as used in the video, they will compress a little bit with the oxygen absorbers but not to much. So no one should be alarmed, it is just nitrogen left over.

There is no need to freeze dry goods before storing them in mylar bags if you are using oxygen absorbers as the lack of oxygen inside the bag kills any larvae that may be present in the products. The self-rising flour will still be good several years later if stored properly, however it will no longer be self-rising as the leavening agents will be depleted. Simply use it as though you would regular flour and add a leavening agent when you bake with it so that it can rise.

You may want to just almost seal all the bags, leave 2-3 inches not sealed, then pop in the O2 absorbers into each bag, and quickly finish each seal.

Sugar will store forever in the presence of oxygen in a food safe container that is in a cool, dry, vermin-free pantry. I store my granulated cane sugar in two-gallon food safe buckets with gasket lids because the sugar would be too heavy for me to lift if I used five-gallon buckets. You can just seal the cane sugar in Mylar bags without oxygen absorbers (they would cause the sugar to harden into a solid mass) or in glass jars with tight-fitting lids. I have also used granulated cane sugar to fill in the voids when I vacuum can home-dehydrated fruit in canning jars.

I think it will do alright without freezing first, it’s more of an extra preventative step as far as I can tell. And I’m pretty certain bugs won’t hatch out in the Mylar bags during storage but possibly after opening them later to use. We all learn as we go and it’s trial and error 😉

I found that flat irons ($10-$15 if you don't have one) work well for items like that because you don't have to lay it down. I also put my bag in a bucket (1 gal bag into 1 gal bucket & so on) because it will hold the bag upright which makes using the flat iron a better option. I will say that if you have a helper it goes a little easier. I am so glad you are demonstrating flour because I purchased the ground flour & not the wheat berries so I was nervous about storing this particular item. Thank you for doing the research on storing these items long term.

I decided to freeze mine based on others suggesting it from their experience. For me I would rather take the extra step and have a better chance at bug free flour but there are other people that have said it’s not necessary. Just research it and do what you feel comfortable with ❤️
@josneaka4866
@josneaka4866 2 года назад
Yes, oxygen absorbers will kill the bugs and eggs after 12 days. Freezing won't be necessary unless you plan on not using oxygen absorbers and are storing for shorter-term, like in jars for a working pantry or storing for a few months. I don't freeze food I'm storing in long term just because I worry about hidden pockets of condensation, and moisture + oxygen absorbers = botulism. X[ Plus, if I can avoid an unnecessary step, I will. But like Serving Up Simplicity said, do a bit of research on that and see what you personally feel comfortable with. If you do decide to freeze, you'll want to make sure to freeze and thaw twice. Eggs can still hatch after the first freeze, so coaxing them into hatching with the first thaw, then freezing them again will finish killing anything off. Good luck with your preps!

Serving Up Simplicity From what I’ve been able to learn regular flour will only store for up to five years? There is so much to learn.

I’m gonna need to put up reguLar boxed cereal soon. I’ve bought too many and i think they will go stale before my family eats it all. I’ve heard that you can do this... nothing official but worth a shot if you might lose it anyway.

This is cool! I imagine they would also be good just to keep from bugs getting into all your dry/baking goods as you need time to go through them. I know living in the south, this is a thing I have to pay attention to all the time. I’m super paranoid and everything is in Tupperwares in my pantry lol

It definitely helps with bugs, especially if you pre-freeze the flour and cornmeal. You can put up pasta as well.

Thank you. Just wondering, if no oxygen absorbers are used in sugar, how do you keep bugs from hatching during storage?
@jessicaartz489
@jessicaartz489 2 года назад
I learned you do not use them with sugar...and sugar is best stored in mason jars.
@melmelbry5754
@melmelbry5754 6 месяцев назад
@jessicaartz489 you can put bay leaves in the sugar as a deterrent. Also, what happens to all those jars if there are earthquakes or explosions? If you drop one it would be devastating considering you cant get more during an apocalypse. Bags are safer. And you can travel with them if necessary. Glass, not so much.
@tiara424777
@tiara424777 4 года назад
so putting the oxygen absorbers in a jar keeps them fresh how long?
@ServingUpSimplicity
@ServingUpSimplicity 4 года назад
It does because the jar seals air tight, the absorbers also come with an indicator packet you can store in the jar to let you know if they are still good. I think they should last around 6 months when stored properly.

I am about to do the same thing with rice and oats. I bought the 5 gallon mylar bags. I got free pickle buckets to put them in. Do you think if you store the food in mylar bags the food will pick up the pickle smell? Thank you. Very good video
@ServingUpSimplicity
@ServingUpSimplicity 4 года назад
Awesome! I would think that the Mylar bag would protect it against the pickle odor as long as you use a quality bag and go with at least a 5 or 7 mil thickness but I’m not 100% sure. Thanks for watching!

@@alienpsychomom as for the pickle bucket smell, you can either sprinkle baking soda into each 'empty bucket' w/lid on to get rid of the smell or spray a little white vinegar and let them air dry a few days. Both will neutralize any odors in/on any surface/room/container.

Oxygen absorbers remove oxygen which would kill bugs, the risk of food having condensation and then spoiling your bagged food is prevalent

@ServingUpSimplicity
@ServingUpSimplicity 4 года назад
I wouldn’t try that because I’m not sure how it may affect the oxygen absorbers. You can just do it on the next batch you put up before putting in Mylar bags, it’s trial and error for us all.

I'm confused as to what you used the oxygen absorbers with.. they pull air, not moisture, when you said you put them in the jar and you said moisture was in the jar? Silica gel pulls moisture. And as for the sugar, I didn't see wether you used you used oxygen absorbers in that or not. Be advised, you cannot use them in sugar. I mix diatomascious earth, without freezing to kill any bug eggs.
@ServingUpSimplicity
@ServingUpSimplicity 4 года назад
The heat from the oxygen absorbers was causing moisture in the mason jar and I used the mason jar to store the extra absorbers I had . And I did NOT use the oxygen absorbers in the sugar as I was told it would make the sugar hard. Thanks for tip on another option for killing the bug eggs 😀

The LDS page “Longer-Term Food Storage” states, “Pouches should be sealed using an impulse sealer (see related instructions). Do not use an iron or another household heating device because it will not provide an adequate seal, especially for powdered products such as flour or dry milk.”

My mylar bags from Wallaby suggest using a straightening iron. I use it at 410 and it seals fine.

The sugar, the salt is preserved forever in their original package, but you can put them in glass jars which is better !!! Everything can be preserved in glass jars including flour, pasta, dried legumes, rice, homemade dried vegetables, etc. etc. etc .. there is no need to spend more money on aluminum bags, or plastic containers / bins, plastic is everywhere and pollutes the whole world, the oceans, the land and our food. So I always avoid plastic where I can, unfortunately plastic is everywhere in every packaging of products in supermarkets, beauty products, hygiene products, etc. etc .. I prefer glass jars better and can keep everything without problems, moreover they are more beautiful to look at when they are on the shelves together with other emergency supplies. I don't need Amazon products I hahahahaha
