Even if you aren't a big rice consumer you can always use this stash to help out someone else or use for barter.

You are suppose to seal ABOVE the RIP NOTCH, thus the rip notch allows you to unseal the package, and then you can reseal with the zipper for short term storage.

I stupidly heat sealed the zipper bag first time below the zip and then was like duuuh..ok if you do it right you only get to use the zip once anyway. After that you clean your mylar bag and refill..snip the zip off anyway. Reuse the mylar it gets smaller each time. Don't waste bags they're pricey and can be reused.

A trick is to seal the bag 3/4 of the way, then add the oxygen absorbers and once the oxygen absorbers are in you only need to seal 1/4 per bag.

@@SuttonsDaze I got some bags recently that came with oxygen absorbers that must have been deactivated. You mentioned one can use regular vacuum sealed bags. I have a Foodsaver. I was thinking of storing small batches of rice with the foodsaver and then placing in the mylar bags. How long do you think it would last that way?
@FLOWERSSURVEYING
@FLOWERSSURVEYING 3 года назад
I like to use a canning funnel to help fill the bags. I also like to get the bags that have the stand-up bottoms (I don't have that fancy bag holder :) ). Looks like your bags might be able to stand up if you flared out the bottoms. Mylar is better for long term storage because plastic bags have tiny holes that will let in air over time, but the mylar is basically a piece of metal sandwiched between plastic and will hold the air-tight seal for many many years.

I put my mylar bags in another plastic tub while I fill to prevent them falling over and spilling contents. I use the Tractor Supply bucket lids since no point using a one time lid you can't open w/o special tool and food already in mylar. That way can open and close if need to check on food or pull out just one quart bag, put lid back on.
@NajwaLaylah

For freezer and other locking bags to hold food (or (non-food) small parts) I jerry-rigged a thing to hold them open from the lid(s) of a 1qt. plastic container that either yogurt or pickles came in. I cut out the center to within two or three eighths of an inch / i cm. of the rim. It fits inside a quart freezer bag handily, and holds itself in place when it's just under the locking seal strip at all points. Then I can use a jar-filler or just pour from a wide spoon or spatula, or from a jar or can or my hand into the bag with no spills. For my serenity's sake (especially with small parts) I also do this over a tray or box to catch any pieces or traces that manage to escape.

I always enjoy watching you. You are so relatable. I don't eat much rice at all, either. I just wanted to say that if I was storing rice for the animals, it would be the cheapest rice on the market, not the jasmine rice. I love my cat so much, but he isn't eating the jasmine or calrose rice if shtf unless I just can't finish what I cooked. (Admittedly, that would end up being all the time... lol!) BTW, I set my bag or jars that I'm filling in a bowl to catch what I spill, which can sometimes be more than I get in the jar. Even if I am using a funnel, I may overflow the container. I have to be the clumsiest in the kitchen. Lastly, I wanted to share that I like to also label the contents and date along the top edge of the mylar bag. That way, when they are standing up in a storage container, I can file them like file folders. I can easily pick the bag with the right contents, and with the shortest best buy date to ensure I'm properly rotating my treasures.

Thank you for all the good tips and information. I also love rice and eat lots of it with my pinto beans or with other meats or my ugly chicken but I did make the break away from white rice many many years ago to brown rice. You are getting twice the nutrients and fiber by eating brown rice. Once you get used to the texture it is really great. It is just that in a shtf situation the more nutrition that you have stored the better. I still like white rice.

Oh, your procedures were actually really good. And personally, I would’ve squeezed more of the air out of it before I zipped it shut. But you should’ve sealed it twice and not in the same place above the zipper line so when you open it later and you don’t need to use the entire bag you can zip it shut again for a week or two is sitting on the shelf. You don’t seal it below the zipper line. But other than that everything was great. Just thought I’d pass that little tidbit of information along. That’s the reason that has the little notches on the mylar bag on both sides where to tear it open. That no longer does any good if you seal it below the zipper line you’re supposed to seal it above the little notches in the mylar bag. God be with you you have a great day.

I have a question regarding the Mylar bags. Once I had one mouse that entered the house and she went into my pantry... oh boy did she make a mess... but I had food in bags and some wrapped in some kind of aluminium bag... she just chew through thick plastic containers, plastic bags and this aluminium one... so my question is... would they be able to chew through a Mylar bag also? Sorry for the question but I never saw (for real) or touched a Mylar bag. Thank you for all those very nicely done and informative videos. 🌹 Can we vacuum seal Mylar bags? If yes, do we still need the O2 absorbers?

Where /how would you store the unused oxygen absorbers so they don't go to waste? Regarding the storage bins. Could I just store the bags in a dark Rubbermaid latch container? Or does it have to be food grade? Any answers would be greatly appreciated as I am overwhelmed.

Gamma lids from Lowe's are great. They were just under $8 each for me. If you're going to start using buckets and gamma lids, I strongly suggest you have a rubber mallet to get the ring to seat onto the bucket. Most of us won't be able to physically push it on. A regular hammer risks cracking the lid ring. I remove the screw top from the ring when I pound the ring into place. It still takes a few wacks, going round and round.

The problem isn’t so much the light. You’ll probably store the bags in a closed container out of the light. Air can permeate vacuum seal bags over time. It might take years, but we’re talking long term storage. Also they are more prone to tiny punctures from hard, sharp contents - like rice. Your trying to keep the air out. Mylar bags are tougher and not air permeable over time.

Did you freeze your rice first? FYI- you have about 30 mins before the O2s start to activate- no need to panic and race and end up spilling. Look away from the light LOL thanks Leisa

Size does matter 😜 Over the last year I have really taken into account what the optimal size "containers" I need to be storing items in. I have things that are specific to just one person in the house. I would rather spend extra money on food storage options than having food wast. Wish you well 🤗

Where can I get the different sizes containers? Which ones do you use for 1 person? Ty.

@@hppyabuela Like Leisa showed, quart sized mylar bags hold about 4 cups of rice. How much rice do you use in 3 months? For my family, a quart bag of rice will last for 3 months in my airtight container in my kitchen and when that is done, I open another one from my bucket ( I am always making sure the bucket is full!) I do the same things with sugars, flour and beans (for example). I have bought mylar in a roll and made my own sized bags, I use the vacuum seal bags in different sizes as-well. Check amazon, Costco or go direct to the manufacturer's . The smaller sizes are always more expensive its sad 😢 I don't know if this helped but good luck🥂

@@4themotherload in my family we eat rice about 4 to 5 x a week...I usually cook 3 cups at a time. I never actually got to think about that before. Lol now I have some calculating to do...I'm starting to become a prepper. Just starting. And I love how Leisa explains everything. Thanks all for the help. 💕

Can you put the white bucket 🪣 inside a black trash bag, then tape it below the rim, or enclose it all the way inside the bag to keep the light out? It would also hide the buckets if you stack and/or store items on top of them, or cover them with a blanket or something and put other items around them.

Most black trash bags allow light to pass through. Hold your bag up to a light or the sun so you see through just one layer.

I tried to use regular vac seal bags and found out that sharp edges of rice and pasta puncture the bags making them useless. I waited a couple of days then checked all the bags and found 3 out of ten were already punctured

Me too…. I just put Basmati Rice in 1-gal Mylar Bags with 400cc Oxygen Absorbers bc that’s what came in the pkg and I wanted to hurry and seal….read it doesn’t hurt to put in extra ( however, a little wasteful I know)…so don’t holler at me……) it’s been a half hour and the four bags don’t look shrunken like the air has been sucked out….so wondering if the absorbers are not good…..they are the Wallaby brand and the lg pkg that the 4-100cc packs were in didn’t have that pink colored dot….I’m going to call Amazon to contact the Co……

@love2tri70 Год назад
@@KT-yq7ed It takes out the oxygen but not the nitrogen so it won’t be shrunken down like a food saver bag. As long as the oxygen absorber is fresh and the bag is sealed, you are good to go!

@@love2tri70 tks I think I left too much room and didn’t fill them up enough, so I cut the bag and brought it closer to the rice and put in two more absorbers and that did the trick….the bags look like all the air is out completely……This was my first time using Mylar Bags with the oxygen absorbers…..I’m still learning…

I just go ahead and vacuum seal the Mylar Bags! I store long-term in small quantities, so I don't have to expend my entire lot. Also, on rice I don't use o2 absorbers, nothing. But, for long-term when you vacuum seal you cut off the oxygen it automatically kills the eggs, bugs, period. Avoid the extra work. It totally works! As long as you store the vacuumed rice as dark and as cool as you can. Rice can last up to 30 years. Mylar with an 02 absorber in a sealed bucket under good temperatures will last a very long time. Throw 2 bay leaves in before sealing. You've got food forever.

What about using brand new metal trash cans to store the Mylar bags? Also it keeps rodents out. Just a thought.

I was vacuum sealing my unused oxygen absorbers and noticed afterwards (immediately) they felt warm. What caused that? Any ideas

Another reason it is better to use Mylar bags (preferably 5-7 mil thick) for long-term storage rather than FoodSaver-type bags is that Oxygen can eventually pass through FoodSaver-type bags and oxidize the food inside them, thus shortening its shelf-life.

If you are sealing food that has sharp edges, seal it in a FoodSaver bag and then put it in a Mylar bag.

Mylar bags after sealing need to be stored in a plastic bucket, because mice can chew through mylar! Ask me how I know.
