STORM CHASER HIT BY A WEDGE
Weather Paparazzi, Doug Kiesling was hit by the outer reaches of a WEDGE TORNADO just north of Quinter Kansas on 05/23/2008.
Footage from dash camera while chasing one tornado, a massive mile wide wedge tornado forms and passes less then 100 yards right in front of the suv. Video shows the power poles being ripped apart and power lines falling on the SUV.

Perfect video for showing how quick a tornado can wedge out. Shows exactly why people need to give the tornado a chance to grow before drawing in so close. You can have a tornado pass safely in front of you, but if it grows into a monster wedge, it can have you for lunch even though it's going away from you. This is where you will hear accounts of tornadoes that turned a 180 and came back and hit someone. Most cases the tornado didn't do a 180, It just grew so fast that it appears to do a 180.

This is some of the best footage out there! I just have one pet peeve though. Storm chasers are always saying, "I'm a hundred yards from it." They're close, but not that close. An athlete can run a hundred yards in about 11 seconds. It's 30 parking spaces. If it doesn't look like you could run into it in about 15 seconds, it's more than 100 yards. It's great footage, no less. Very risky!

wow! Im from SW Missouri and was around when a tornado hit Pierce City in May of '03. We watched one funnel turn into three, then join together and thats all she wrote. We chased it long enough to realize that we were right in it's path. We finally got turned around in time for it to cross our path about a 1/4 mile away. I will always remeber how I felt during all that so I just cant' imagine being there for this one ... BREATH TAKING! Thanks for posting, you should get an award for this one.

Could that have been a satellite of the main wedge tornado? I mean that was scary. One moment you have the twister ahead of you, next thing it’s gone and you have a huge developing wedge behind you, quickly obscured by the RFD.

First, you weren't "hit" by that tornado. Second, unless you knew the road ahead was about to end, it seems your best course of action would've been to drive straight ahead to daylight, in the earlier portion of this video.
@4J25
@4J25 8 лет назад
He was most definitely hit, even if it was only by the outer circulation of the tornado. This tornado appeared to be traveling to the northeast, which would have cut off any opportunities for him to traverse forwards to escape it.
@2200Z
@2200Z 7 лет назад
The roads got really crappy just north of this location. I rolled past the power station you see in this video maybe five minutes later (and having to go around the downed power lines and people getting stuck in the ditch trying to go around the power lines) and the road network turned into a mud pit and ninety-degree turns and down a huge hill into a steep valley. There would have been no way to drive north and escape this thing on muddy roads even in his Jeep. Give me concrete and I'd give it a shot, but I never like being in front of even small tornadoes. Ya can't stop and film. Oh, and he was hit right at the beginning of the wedge coming into view, but was blasted with RFD winds as he rolled to the south of it. I don't like being that close as I like my windows. There were people losing windows back at the power station.
@finalfanta15
@finalfanta15 7 лет назад
That's a really bad idea. Tornadoes can change their trajectory and their travel speed. If he gunned it and the Tornado suddenly started moving the other direction, it would literally be suicide. It's exactly what happened to Tim Samaras' crew (one of the best and well known storm chasers to date) in the El Reno Tornado. It's a lot safer to turn around when it starts getting too close for comfort then to try and speed forward and out speed it.
@2200Z
@2200Z 7 лет назад
+finalfanta15. Not exactly. Tim and his crew CHOSE to OFTEN drive in front of tornadoes to place pods. Sooner, or later, you're gonna pay the price for those actions. Ya just don't purposely pull those stunts on days with 4000-5000 CAPE (explosive growth and sustainability) and 70s dewpoints (potential HP storm mode) and plenty of bulk shear (tearing vortices). Watch Tim's Bowdle video. It's what he did all of the time.

Great video. I am confused though. There was a stovepipe tornado in front of you in the white/bright clouds area, it expands and wraps with rain and kind of disappears. Then suddenly way behind you is a giant dark wedge. What happened? Was it 2 different tornadoes or did it go into the rain and then run up behind you and change directions again?

We saw the cone lift & chose to wait along I70 for another cell to the south. This later storm dropped Quinter 4 & luckily took a left & went between Quinter & Park to the west. My buddy Colt & I filmed this wedge (which I assume everyone names #2 for wedge 2) entirely from I70. I still come back to this vid! Great stuff man.
