I’ve been up Misery Ridge and it is aptly named. With one artificial knee joint and it being a warm day, it was a bit miserable but the views were totally worth it. Nice to see you enjoyed the area and the resulting images are awesome! Michael’s time lapse of those clouds is mesmerizing as well. Nicely done Gavin!

Thanks for the tip with the solar panel! Since I started my landscape photography vlog I also need much more battery power ;) Btw: Awesome work with that amazing cloud! I love the 1st version more, it gives a longer way to lead my eyes over the stream from the left and I think the viewers will stay longer in this one :)

Yep, the 4x2 crop works for me. That’s a jaw dropper right there that is!! I’ve just come from watching Tom Heaton in Glen Coe. Oh the rain. Could there really be anymore rain in the sky above Blighty right now. Have we not suffered enough bland skies and then I see this one of yours. I love the clouds straight after a storm, just the best time to grab your camera my opinion. Get Mike to say “Ee by eck as like. Tha knows nowt, tha knows”, but not in that Welsh Australian accent. That would ruin it. It was like listening to Dick Van Dyke from Mary Poppins.

Great conditions! The kind most of us dream about, but don't get rewarded with often. I prefer the first shot at 7:30 that includes the river as a leading line.

Both photos are great but my vote would be on Smith Rock itself, it's an awesome place. Fortunately my son lives in Bend so when I'm over that way (from Yorkshire) I always have a couple of visits and get happy on the misery ridge walk and of course take some less than awesome photos. It's well worth a visit. Take a camera with you.

I feel lucky to be only 2.5 hours from Smith Rock. It's really beautiful. A lot of climbing and hiking. Monsoon season is always the best.

Great storm cloud capture! I personally prefer the original composition, mainly because of the river. If there were no river, the 4x2 would be fine. With it, the eye follows the cut-off river out of the image altogether. Or, maybe that's just my wandering eye again.

Nice video, you definitely got lucky with the light and clouds! I think the 4:2 crop may be a bit too "heavy" on the left side.

Tresmendous storm image! I'll admit, it's nice to see a storm cloud over an interesting geological formation, BUT .. come to Saskatchewan in July. I'll show you what a real storm cloud looks like 😉

The photo at 7:20 is something else.. Incredible conditions. As for which one I prefer, I feel like I want less of the full crop on bottom, but more of the 4x2 crop on the bottom; somewhere in the middle. I think the shot at 10:55 works a lot better with more of the river in the bottom left than the one with the large storm cloud.

Very nice place the solar panel in car window. Can you charge your battery's while driving. You may need to install a line straight to your car battery this way you can charge over night without the key on.

You two guys seem to get along great, I can see the way you two make GooGoo eyes at each other, or is that the sun in your eyes lol

Hey Gavin I don't really like the 4:2. In my opinion the rock on the bottom right corner is very distracting. But I really like the last shot with the soft sunset light! I like it more then the big clouds! Regards Stefan

Gavin, I noticed that you're shooting those gorgeous clouds with an A7Rii although your gear list shows the A7Riii. I'm interested in moving to a full-frame system but need to do it on a budget. I don't need the fancier autofocus of the A7Riii nor do I care about video as I shoot mostly waterfalls, mountains and birds. I'm guessing you find the A7Rii remains a solid performer in the landscape photography world. An R7ii can be had for well under $1000 and I'm willing to carry extra batteries. What say you? Also, I prefer the uncropped version but both of them are killer shots! Freakin' amazing clouds. Well Done!

In answer to your question, I prefer the uncropped 3:2 image. The cropped version looks odd with the river chopped off at the bottom.

I like the first picture. In the 4x2 crop picture the river feels little weird, like a scratch, but it's just my opinion. 😀

Also, the main problem with charging the NPFW50 (?) batteries, either on a dual charger or in-camera, is that it's extremely inefficient power-wise due to the USB protocol and whatever charging technology that Sony put in those junky mk2 bodies/batteries. To get the most out of charging, pick up some of those external chargers that charge only one battery at a time, not two, but still run off USB power. Also, for some reason the quality of the USB cable really affects the mAh that it can put out, so "legit" USB cables that are confirmed to do 2-3 amps (Anker for example) are a must. Lastly, the exact model of solar panel matters a lot, some barely put out half the amps they claim, others do much better.
