While searching for more info about whether István is actually an Orthodox saint, I stumbled upon your video. Thank you for clearing some things up! Can you help me find the source about him being canonized in 2007 by a synod of the Russian Orthodox Church? Can't find it anywhere online.

Seems St. Stephen may be an ancestor of mine. Agatha Arpad certainly seems to be one. It's unclear if she's his daughter, but some accounts suggest she is. Anyway, I'm related to a Prince Andras Arpad via a contemporaneous cousin of his in British history, e.g. Isobel of Huntingdon, who was Agatha's 3x great-granddaughter via Agatha's daughter St Margaret of Scotland. It's a funny old world.

@@ATTILA84 Yeah, I've heard of that. Don't think they're ancestors of mine, but you never know.

Romanian here. While there might have been Orthodox clergy in Hungary, I don't believe this changes much. There was a Catholic presence in Bulgaria, before there was an Orthodox one. And actually Romanians themselves had Christianity brought to them by the Romans, our basic Christian words are Latin, coming from the III-IV-th century. It's way later in the X-th century that Orthodoxy has penetrated, and imposed Church Slavonic. St. Stephen was clearly a western christian, crowned by the pope himself. Of course being pre-schism he has a place in the Orthodox Church, as do the Orthodox saints in the Catholic Church. In fact, there are Orthodox Churches that have paintings of St. Francisc of Assisi, even known he lived after the split, just because he really was a saint.

You should listen to Orthodox Survival Course, by Fr. Seraphim Rose, how goes over the split and Francis of Assisi

Maybe I completely misunderstand you... But I have the feeling you mix up language, Latin in this case, with theological issues and/or semantics. The Roman 'Papal Protestantism' (paraphrasing Justin Popivich) split was already in the air for centuries, however is the official date still 1054. Yet the phrase "Catholic presence" (Roman we should call it, because Orthodoxy = Catholic) suggests that there was already an official split way before. This would render a lot of early saints in now non-orthodox countries such as England and France problematic. Maybe that's why there are a lot of these saints fading away to oblivion in the Orthodox spheres. Again, perhaps I totally misread your comment.
