A wander around Stowmarket in Suffolk with my mate Bob remembering growing up here. The many independent shops now long gone.

My grandparents lived off Tavern Street in the 60s. I remember crossing Bury Street to the Co-op dodging all the lorries and fumes when they used to travel through the town. I used to play in the Rec as a child and I'm sad to see the old school being pulled down. It backed onto Childer Road so thats gonna be a big change. I spent a lot of time in the British Legion club too specially at Christmas time. It was a fantastic place to have known. I have been back recently and like many places has become extremely over developed. Nice video thank you.

The newsagents you talked about at the bottom of Bury St, by the lights, was owned by George Wilden (he retired in the early 60’s to Clacton - my dad and he were good friends). His wife ran the newsagents shop and he, being an expert photographer, ran a studio - I have several family pictures taken by him. After they retired the business continued to trade as Wildens but the photographic part became a ladies and gents hairdressers

Hi Bob, thanks for the walk and tour. It's sad to see what has happened to the Secondary Modern School. The sweet shop you were thinking of was Meesons. Merry Christmas.

Excellent video thanks, brings back memories. And of course the A45 ran straight through stowmarket, no A14 then. So could be a bit hazardous to cross the road

Ah yes! I forgot about that! Hard to imagine all the A14 traffic going through town now! 😀

I used to live in Stow during the 50’s and 60’s and, to fill in one of your information gaps, what is now Maxwell Brown at 45 Ipswich St was Newby’s Printer and Stationary business. They also sold jigsaws and other small toys. John Newby was a well known business figure in the town during the first half of the century and a prominent supporter of Stow FC.
