Thank you so much Doc for this absolute masterclass series of videos. Watching you shave was a jaw dropping experience by itself. I'm into week six of learning to shave with a straight, and in between your videos, did the wobble test on my two razors, and now know what to do. You have become my guru.
I’m sitting here watching this nearly 5 years later. My shave technique was pretty good but my lathering STINKS! 😝 Check out my “Best Shave Cream Ever” video for some ridiculous lather!!!
I had a pretty good knowledge of the honing since I've been sharpening knives that will shave arm hair since a young lad.I presently only use a 4000-8000 norton water stone For SR's with good results, (and yes I have the lapper & use it often, smiles) but would like a finer japanese stone, just to say I've done it. What was most impressive was the shaving video. That was the best 3 pass straight razor vid I've yet to see... most are one pass and see yuh, lol. Very good sir! I've been using one about 8 months now and was never really happy with the end shave, used a DE to finish, but love my SR's... Now I know the CORRECT way to use them. TY for a good 3pass SR video!
Great series, I'm almost tempted to shave my beard off! The only additional thing I'd have liked to see was a microscope shot of the blade after stropping.
Thanks for the compliment. The edge would have looked identical after stropping. It is debate able as to what stropping actually does. Even under extreme, levels of magnification, (SEM) the before and after pics are pretty much the same.
Phil, I never said stropping doesn't work. I said it's debatable WHAT it does. Some say it lines up the little teeth... not true. We might not know what it does but but there's no doubt it works. Here's the best stropping video on the net: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rgsEKpA4SUI.html
Dr.Matt viewed the whole series great information now I have my test razor as for learning how to do it. I have an issue and need some insight used a 1k for the edge 3k then 6 & the 8. Spent a lot of time on the 1k . Problem is it does not cut arm 😡 hair what or where did I go wrong
Richard Torres - I don’t know that it went wrong Richard but just not far enough. Put a piece of tape on the spine and go to your 6K. Do 30 passes and get a tomato or grape and see if it easily cuts the skin. If not, do another 30 and keep going until it cuts the skin. When it does, do 30 on your 8 (and hopefully something a bit finer after that if you want to shave with it) and let me know what happens.
@@drmatt357 Doc I did as directed but no better could I send to you so that you can let me know what I'm doing wrong please remember it's a cheap razor let me know
n1 and n2? Do you mean the first 2 stones I used? Those are Nubatama stones. This was something different I was doing but usually I will use a diamond plate if needed then to my Chosera 1K, it's a green stone. Very popular in the community.
This Guy has some great video`s but please do not test your razors edge by shaving your philtrum like this on his third pass, you will regret doing so if the razors edge grabs then slips it will slice the center of your nose This is just to show viewers that he is confident with his razors edge to show the viewer how sharp he has got the razor edge, So newbies this is not a common practice to shave upwards under the nose, But watch his vids they are very educational and well worth watching,
piece toyou They don't call it a Fool's Pass for nothing! It is a good judge to tell how keen the edge is but I do it as part of my every day shave routine... even when the camera is not rolling. 😜
Matt, I 1st wrote that I'd replicated my version of 'nanocloth' and found it useful as a polishing instrument.. I now have seen you set a bevel on a 400steel plate. Confused mate. I have a nani 1k 207 x 66 x34 to set the bevel, then I use a progression. (Tell me where I err) Then nani 4k king 6k, king 8k, icebear 10k 15k suehiro gokumyo, 20k suehiro gokumyo. I don't have a jnat, any advice as to my current regimen of stones is welcome, I'm thinking of growing a beard!
Your progression is fine. I use the diamond because it's faster and it stays flat. As you set the bevel on a 1k (or any water stone for that matter), it will start to wear away as you go. If you have a lot of work to do as on Gold Dollars, by the time your done, the stone won't be so flat.
Robert Don't get confused with the way other guys hone, there are 100s of methods and your progression is perfectly fine, as a matter of fact a great setup and you have a lot more than you need. I've honed GD razors and their steel is quite tough and I do something similar to Dr.Matt by setting a bevel on a DMT325 and converting it to a shapton 320. In saying that, carbon steel or other softer steel razors like a sheffield, I set a bevel on them using the Shapton 2k sometimes (depending on the condition of the edge). The key is to set a good bevel, everything after that is polishing that bevel and removing scratches, mountains and valleys from your edge. It doesn't matter what you finish on, you can finish on a 60k Yamashiro Aria but if you don't have a correctly set bevel you'll get better shaves off your 6k with a good bevel. That's just the truth. Never move away from your 1k whever in doubt, hope this helps. Thanks for making those videos Dr Matt, it was quite pleasurable to watch.
Wet Shaving Advocate Thanks for your advice. As you put it there are a 100 WAYS TO SKIN A CAT! One thing, I found I had to use steel on the dmt325 to make it sufficiently mellow to use it as a flattening/truing plate, for stones right up to 20k, I just sharpened every knife in the kitchen and tried to cover as much of the dmt as possible, now it doesn't leave scratches on my expensive stones, cheers
