Straight Razor Honing - The Contriversial Convex Coticule?

Honing and continuing my experimenting with a Convex Coticule. The razor was finished with a flat Thuringian.
I realized after watching, I referred to my coticule as having a 9 degrees wheel. That is not correct. Forgive me I am new to this theory, the stone was shaped on a homemade 9 foot wheel plate. Sorry for the confusion.

Hi Eric. That is probably one of the most traditional way you can hone a razor, and an easy way to use some of the benefits of a convex stone. Coticules are perfect for this task. I really don't understand all the drama around this topic.

As I stated, in my testing I have noted repeatable positive results. Thats all I can go by, take it or leave it. I appreciate your help getting started in the process.

I have Jarrods shaping plate ,i tried a convex hone on too course a stone ...it didnt work for me , but the principal is sound . I think a finer stone with slurry as you're doing with a coti is very clever ! Only need the one stone and varying the slurry. Convexing several stones is a scary proposition. (I'd love to try a thuringian) Thank you Eric for your insights and knowledge !

That’s my thought and fear. I have too many stones that I love. No way I could curve them all in good conscience. But the Coti gives me a one stone hone to play with. Or just thin behind apex and move to one of my finishers. At the end of the day it’s just another tool, and who doesn’t love tools 😃

Hi Eric. Nice video on convex honing, and I agree, no drama needed about this. I intend to do a video on the benefits and drawbacks of it but that video is a _long_ way off. It took me about a month to really understand how to use the packing peanut to feel changes in sharpness as I move from coarser to finer stones. And I don't bother with HHT anymore. The peanut allows me to check the entire edge quickly and accurately. I have conveyed my thanks to Bill M.

Thanks Gregg, I have been enjoying your content as well. The peanut is a game changer for me, I am for anything that makes life easier. As for the convex honing. I think that it does not have to be flat or convex argument. Use it or don’t. I am not trying to be right. I am just tryitng to have a good time 😜.

Not trying to be right shows your experience. My approach will be to discuss how it works and what steels and tempers might be best suited. I’m trying to figure out a way to keep the math and materials science to a minimum. It’s also important to realize that we all have confirmation bias. And that’s not a bad thing. It just is.

@@greggallant5058 Yep, we all like what we like. Those good and bad experiences that shape my opinion may not be consistent with the next fellows results. I try to keep an open mind, and try to learn a little every honing. The testing and tinkering is what I enjoy the most.

Love the video Eric!! The packing peanut test was extremely good. I like how you talk about convex honing, just telling your experience. I also really liked the setup for the video, seeing the stone from this angle was great! The thuringian looks awesome. Would love to read more about them. Have a good one my friend, cheers!

Thanks bud, was not sure how it would go. This was not my normal setup. It kind of looks weird, my hands look enormous 🤣. So far my experience with that little Coti has been positive. This should not be such a drama filled subject. Do it or don’t do it, I don’t care, I am seeing benefits. No way I shape all my stones, my collection is too precious to me. But I can take the best of both and do my own thing. Thanks for watching.
