In this video I show how to install a strain gauge to the surface of a metal bar. Then, I demonstrate the change of the resistance of it upon deformation first with a multimeter, then through my circuit and software.
My circuit can be seen in the previous video in this topic:

Great experiment. Never opened my scale but I thought the strain gauges needed to be attached in a more complicated way, that's great.
@CuriousScientist
@CuriousScientist 4 года назад
Thanks! Not, it is "just glued" to the surface. Of course, they might use different glues, but cyanoacrylate glues are usually perfectly fine for the purpose. When they are used in load cells, they are attached in a bit more complex way in a sense, that they are installed to a certain geometry with a certain alignment. In load cells, it is often that there are 4 strain gauges are used.

What is the built-in module you use (the one at 2:45)? I have developed my own circuit making a Wheatstone bridge and using an instrumental amplifier, but just because I wasn't aware of the existence of these kinds of built-in solutions. This seems to simplify the matter a lot!

How accurate are these strain guages? Could they possibly be used to measure the expansion of a metal tube over the course of an evening as the temperature outside changes?
@CuriousScientist
@CuriousScientist 3 года назад
Definitely! In fact, if you want to use the strain gauges properly, you have to install them in a way that they cancel out the thermal expansion. The unit used for strain gauges is usually expressed in "microstrain" because the change that you can resolve with them "does not make sense" in "strain" units. It is just too small to use the regular strain units.

thank you sir, if i may ask. how do i know the amplifier gain that used in the module?
@CuriousScientist
@CuriousScientist 3 года назад
You are welcome! Either you check the schematics of the amplifier and calculate it or measure the voltage at the input and the output of the amplifier and figure it out from the proportions. If I am not wrong, the LM358-based circuit has a 2-stage amplification, first with ~50x gain which is followed by another ~25x gain stage.

Great video. I am wondering why don’t you use hx711 with 3 constant resistors to establish a Wheatstone bridge.
@CuriousScientist
@CuriousScientist 3 года назад
Hi! I cannot offset the signal with the HX711, and I cannot measure fast. The HX711 can only measure up to 80 samples/s. Also, the amplifier circuit comes with a built-in Wheatstone bridge.
@ahmedalkhairo7651
@ahmedalkhairo7651 3 года назад
@@CuriousScientist So, is this module capable of measuring strain gauges for dynamic and impact experiments? What’s the best amplifier for this kind of experiments?
@CuriousScientist
@CuriousScientist 3 года назад
It is capable yes. For dynamic experiments, you just need a fast and high resolution ADC such as the ads1256. I don't know which is the *best* as I haven't tested too many yet.
@ahmedalkhairo7651
@ahmedalkhairo7651 3 года назад
@@CuriousScientist Thanks for your reply. What about load cells, can I hook it to this module? I mean load cell is a full Wheatstone bridge which means that we don’t need the built-in resistors. I built similar data logger with hx711 modules and three resistors attached to the output to make the Wheatstone bridge. Thus, I can read strain gauges and loadcell at the same time. However, I am looking for an upgrade to read at higher sampling rate for dynamic testing.
@CuriousScientist
@CuriousScientist 3 года назад
Load cells will not work with this module. I think you haven't watched the video carefully enough, but I specifically talked about this. This is a strain gauge amplifier with a built-in Wheatstone bridge.

hello, thanks for this video. So, I have a strain gauge with amplifier connected to the Arduino circuit. i am able to read some numbers from the strain gague but it's not the forces or the mass. do you know how i can make Arduino convert whatever the strain gauge is reading to mass?
@CuriousScientist
@CuriousScientist 2 года назад
Hi! I think you don't understand how strain gauges work. Check my video, so you will understand more about them: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FWRiSIqF3f8.html In order to convert the readings into weight, you need to be able to convert the voltage into strain, then you need to convert the strain into force/stress (hint: Hooke's law).
