thankyou for posting this video,a reality based video that shows the real life of pilots and pilot boat captains,a career that many of us take for granted.these men take risks to get the job done so that we may enjoy goods that are traded between countries. I take my hat off to these brave people, they have my utmost respect. gotta have to have nerves of steel just to climb the ladder, then after that they have to navigate the vessel to it's of port of call,, amazing individuals!!!!

1:46 - 2:03 where does this video come from? That footage is completely insane, that wave was completely insane how it toyed with the ship. God, I remember watching this video way back to 2007 and never forgot it. This is the first time rewatching this in like 10 years.

Capt.Lutfu Berk (50 yo, was known being fond of his 3 children) a senior pilot serving in the Strait of Istanbul, lost his life when he fall onto the pilot boat while disembarking a ship on 20.12.2006 just after midnight. I'm sure that most of his friends/colleagues have been mourned once again after seing this video.

Such a Dangerous job...And I am so sorry for the loss of your dear Friend.the Sea is a wild thing, and climbing from one vessel to another must be so difficult as both are moving, and there is a risk of falling between the ships.. This is a job for the Brave, and all seafarers have my respect..The Sea is a fascinating element, but an unforgiving one.god Protect all at sea.

To ADtranzer, the number one power at sea is the sea as demonstrated so beautifully by this film, seafarers never forget that. I spent 23 years at sea, it can be beautiful, awe inspiring and occasionally frightening but the first thing you learn is to never turn your back on it. Seafarers always stop what they are doing and change course to go to the aid of a fellow seafarer, it doesn't matter who he is or what nationality.

Besides, this video is about *pilots*, who do not live on ships. They are the ones who board a ship outside the harbor (which is why there are so many scenes of boarding at sea) and guide it in to port. By necessity, they live at port. They have to have deep knowledge of the unique hazzards of their port. Currents, tides, rocks, shifting bottom conditions. Plus, they have to be highly experienced helmsmen, able to adapt to the handling of a wide variety of ships. They make serious money.
@rodosallyb

Hi JRC, In the UK You need to become a ships captain first then apply for a job directly to the district that you are interested in. Some countries have national pilotage organisations to which you apply and then get allocated to a specific district. There are some exceptions to that rule but the vast majority of countries require a captains certificate at the very least.That is why you dont see any young guys in the video.
@vincent7520
@vincent7520 16 лет назад
great video... however, I wonder if the sea conditions are the same in the takes that show the pilots boarding as in the others... Anyway those pilots, as most all over the world, do a great job... These guy must be able to assess the beavior of a boat whatever her tonnage, windage, cargo, and all her other characteristics. Did you ever hear of an accident caused by a pilot in ahy harbour ? I didn't.

Excellently put together video. I love the sea,always have done since a kid. Great admiration for all those who work on the sea and the Pilots,worldwide.I used to watch the Pilots boarding the ships in 'The Wash' on the East coast of England. If I only had the bollocks to go to sea I would have years ago but I'am too chicken. All these 'storm' videos are quality. Top people!!

@Carobaires this video has been made for the memory of our pilot friend who lost his life during disembarcation at Istanbul straith.The maker also donets this film to the seaman of the world whome we appreciate their work. Obviously we do not get such storms here but may get sveral storms during december-february period.BlackSea and Aegean Sea enterance may get 7-8 gale force.

Agreed, there really is nothing like the open ocean feeling the spray of ocean on your face and in your hair. I even like the crystallized ocean water grime in my hair, odd as that sounds. The taste of it on your lips, that's heaven. And I love how it feels on the open sea at night when it's just you, the ship, and the stars. You made me get sentimental :-P Nice song too.

Interesting video but why did the author include film footage shot on the Great Lakes as well as the Ferry Cariboo which runs between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in a video about the Turkish ship pilots. The story opf pilots is exciting enough without fluffing with unrelated video.

in most ports they have pilots that the captain has to let drive his boat into the harbor or through a straight in this case because of there superior knowledge of the area.these guys are very important and they are sent out to the boat that is coming in and they climb up usually bye ladder.

@Joybellmorgans 15 лет назад
Pilots do a great job, but they do not board on heavy seas. There are times when ships are delayed going into port when "pilot unable to board due to heavy seas". Some of these clips look like force 9 gale winds so boarding would be out of the question.
