Blurring the lines between machine and animal, art and science, sculpture and performance, Strandbeest: The Dream Machines of Theo Jansen made its Midwest debut this Winter at the Chicago Cultural Center. Dutch artist Theo Jansen has spent the last 25 years developing his uncanny and beautiful Strandbeests-or “beach creatures”-which today have become a global phenomenon. Jansen and CHF’s Emeritus Artistic Director Lawrence Weschler discuss these mythical creatures.
Presented in partnership with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events.
This program was recorded on February 7, 2016.

Beyond brilliant, and the man has a sense of humor, too. He has added to humanity's knowledge and worth. All good wishes.

What a magnificent cultural center! I must surely try to visit this place some day. And great talk and discussion! I am fascinated by these Strandbeests. I don't find them scary as some people do, but very poetic.

I hope, that he will make one, that makes some kind of musical sound, when it walks, like little bells going"kling, kling," or something. 😀

If humans can come up with things like this, then SURELY, some of us will find ways to bring on the transition towards WORLD PEACE and HARMONY WITH NATURE.

I just want to collaborate. I think there’s a certain number of tubes when combined like you did it’s generated a conformity that our eye catch and send the emotion for our brain… but we cannot describe…

the contradiction interests us, and one believes that in order to understand whether it is alive one must experiment, and see more, and so the strandbeest spreads.

I see machines using these mechanical ideas merging with computers. All terrain intelligent robots that reproduce with 3D printing.

Why are these not exploring Mars? We could send them to Mars and as long as there is wind they would be able to explore endlessly.

There seem to be all sorts of individual and collective tendencies and inclinations toward so-called progress despite intuitive signals that we are entering dangerous waters that will eventually take us toward the brink of extinction, but for some reason there are dynamics going on in a myriad of locations, in whatever discipline, that despite our human history as a school of learning, are pushing almost compulsively towards dystopia. What is it with the nature of the beast, man, that constantly seeks the edge? As an art form, looking for this edge can be seen as a Spielerei ( German ) and the artist in question HOPES to be seen as a kind of Leonardo Da Vinci, but if this mentality can be detected at, say, the BioWarfare Industrial Complex, it is acutely very worrying. So the artist also has a responsibility and may add as a disclaimer that the billionaires along with industry should not play God!!!

31:47 diseases cause dis-ease. You want to use the word infection not disease. As disease is a state of dis-ease.
