Motorcycle tube ripped open and now I'm stranded in the middle of the Atacama desert and it doesn't look like it can be repaired.
THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT: donorbox.org/s...
/ pedromota
Continue the morning where we left of at night repairing the motorcycle rear tire. Turns out the valve stem was ripped clear off the tube. Nothing is going to patch that. Luckily I do ride with an awesome tire lever. Once back on the road head to San Pedro de Atacama through the hot desert to find a new rear tube and a rim lock. No luck. Have to ride to Calama to find a motorcycle shop.

Good job Pedro!!! You are a very resourceful young man using those rocks for a jack stand!! You may want to consider carrying a foot long section of thin walled pipe that fits over your ratchet handle to gain more leverage when trying to loosen over tightened nuts.

I continue to be impressed with your ability to roll with every punch. Is there any footage of you rage-screaming at the universe before you demonstrate how to calmly respond to each calamity? Is there any video where everything just goes as planned? Glad you are staying safe & hope it stays that way!

Cheers man. A PR manager would advise against me answering this question but I don't have one so the answer is yes. There have been moments where I've raged and I think in many cases it seems to stem from a childlike impotence with things not going your way. Usually it happens because of a discrepancy between what you were expecting your situation would be and what your actual situation is and a failure to accept and adapt to the new circumstances. Can feel quite embarrassing afterwards but at the end of the day we are still monkeys. Those moments though have helped me grow and made me more patient. It also helps to know about the experiences of others and that I'm not alone in this. The more you deal with varying situations the more apt you become at dealing with new situations. Recently I had a moment again where it all came together negatively: high altitude, sick, weak, tremendously underperforming bike and a serious obstacle to overcome. And isolated area too so in the back of my head I know that things can get real if I don't solve it. Got pissed, raged like I hadn’t in a long time, but was laughing about it when it was over and done with. It’s easy to look perfect on youtube but I think it can be worth more sharing these moments of failure so that others might go “hey, I’m not crazy”. Again, riding reflecting life: control those emotions and become a better able person at life. Very human thing and I think I might do a video on this one day.

@4:48....bloody impressive "jack stand" and better yet- successful tire change. In 39 years of riding...I've NEVER had a flat tire. Never changed a tire. But also- never been offroad.(officially) Heat: decades ago, touring the SW US....Arizona, ended up in a hospital- after I passed out in a taxi- in Tempe, AZ. I had ridden from Seattle, WA.- in two days, on a Yamaha Seca 650 Turbo. Seet bike, great fairing, and a relentless sun....I got "baked". Salt stains all over my body, massive cramping, and getting stupid. Even though my brain was cooking, I "knew" I was in trouble. As soon as I got to the motel, parked- my bike fell over. The asphalt was so hot, and soft- it totally ate the side-stand. Not easy picking a bike up either w/ heatstroke. Checked in, couldn't sign guest register: signed an "X". I was cramping so badly- and couldn't explain coherently. On way to room grabbed buckets of ice from ice machine and went to room, drew cold water bath, threw in all the ice...and immersed myself. I knew I was close to dying- my internal temp 102+. I woke up some hours later....all the ice melted. I felt better, got out, got dressed, and decided to head out for a quick dinner and beer. I hailed a taxi. I woke up in the ICU of a hospital. I had tubes coming out of me, an oxy mask on, and I was again immersed in a cold bath. Turned out I had passed out in the taxi ride- and the driver thought I was a druggie overdose- and hauled ass for a hospital. He saved my life. Ever since that trip I'm had a real struggle w/ Heat. As in, a lower threshold to being able to handle it. I'm much more sensitive to high temps. After I got out of ICU the next day, the docs gave me an empty 5gal. jug w/ a length of surgical tubing. That was my DIY'ed "water canteen" for my homeward bound m/c trip. And- I only rode at night, until I got out of the Southwest, and north of LA....to avoid the heat. Rides safe bro; love your work and the wonders you see and share.

I've found that easiest way for me to not pinch a tube is to put just air into the tube to inflate it but no pressure, my tire iron will slide right over it then.

Pedro, the mod is working very good. Your riding is rougher than mine so carry a front tube in case you slice the tire. Think about it, 1 sliced tire 5 years ago and how many punctures in that time. In all my years of riding 2 wheels i haven't sliced a tire but quite a few punctures. 10 minutes and you are on your way. I used the tape only and the tires are not losing air. Try it, you might like it. Safe riding and keep sharing with us.

Hey Pedro, I do get the 'kriebels' too when I hit up a town or village that is super touristic. Those wheel nuts can be a pain when a mechanic just doesn't know bikes as well as they think they do, I lost a axle that way a few years back. But we learn, always do as much as you can yourself so you know you can go on safely. ;-) Shiny side up! TIP: get some hollow metal tube which can slide over the ratchet handle to extend it, for the 'hefboom effect' make life easier getting things off!

Hey Pedro would you say flat tires on your trips are a big problem ,how many have you had in your many trips .Any tips .Thanks
@iPedroMota
@iPedroMota 5 лет назад
Not a big problem, they just happen every now and then and sometimes when you least expect it. Happens a lot less with tough tubes though so if you're not tubeless I highly recommend those like the one I bought in the video. Have the right tools like the tire lever I used and a couple of smaller levers. Bring a patch kit for tubes and a couple of patches for tires because sometimes they rip and when they do they might "chew" on the inner tube. Experience makes it easier. Being Dutch and having grown up on a bicycles helped.

Had a decent gash once, albeit only once in 5 years, on the sidewall of the tire. Patched it up with piece of rubber and glue but not sure if that would have been air tight. Now I travel with a few tire patches. In a worst case scenario where you seriously cut up the tire you could still patch things up with rubber and zip ties and still get some air in there with the tube.

Charly has very little charisma and very poor social skills ( I speak Spanish ) and was able to pull that off.... Have you tried to reach them to sponsor you at least with spare parts instead of limping your way around with crude patches to the bike?..... Or a new bike for that matter!....
